The demand for nursing assistants in Washington is at its all-time high. If you’re looking for a change in careers, then you might want to think about becoming a nursing assistant. It’s an entry-level profession which makes it much easier to become one compared to other careers such as Nursing.

group-of-medical-students-at-school-eventNursing Assistant Training

The first thing that you’ll need to do to become a CNA is to find a training program that approved by the state. It’s important that you learn all the things that might be needed when you take care of the patients as a nursing assistant. NATPs will teach you basic nursing procedures, personal care, communication skills, patients’ rights and independence, and many more.

Another great thing that makes this profession perfect when switching careers is that you can already start working as a nursing assistant, even without a certificate. A healthcare facility is allowed to let a person work as a nursing assistant, provided that they take the responsibility for the actions of its employee. That person is then given a maximum of 120 days to complete a training program and take the NNAAP exam.

Establishing Eligibility

Completing a DSHS-approved NATP is one of the ways to establish eligibility for the NNAAP exam. You can also qualify if you complete a nursing education program as a nursing student or graduate; complete a military training program as a medic or corpsman, or complete a health care training program that’s approved in another state.

National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Examination

The NNAAP exam is divided into two parts. The first part is a 2 hour written/oral exam while the second part is the random skills evaluation. Candidates are given only 25 minutes to perform all required nursing procedures. If a candidate passes both tests, then his or her name will be entered into the Nurse Aide Registry.

The Nurse Aide Registry

This Registry contains all the names of nursing assistants who have met the federal and state’s training and testing requirements. Once your name is entered into the Registry, you can then apply for a Nursing Assistant Certificate from the Washington State Department of Health. The certificate will come in handy when you go applying for a job.

Names on the Registry are only there for 2 years. To keep yours on, you’ll need to renew your certification on or before your birthday every 2 years. To avoid any problems when renewing, you must keep your record in the NAR updated. Please inform the Aging and Disabilities Services Administration (ADSA) and the DOH if you even change your name and/or address by submitting the Request for Change in Name/Address form. You can also try and visit this link: http://www.doh.wa.gov/LicensesPermitsandCertificates/ProfessionsNewReneworUpdate/ChangeyourContactorAddressInformation.aspx, and download the necessary forms.

female-nurse-trainee-showing-class-presentationLooking for a suitable program might be a bit confusing for some people since there are now a lot of programs to choose from. You’ll have to think carefully about this, but whatever you choose, you just have to make sure that the program you select is approved by the state’s Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS). This’ll make sure that you receive proper training and be able to proceed to the next step in becoming an NAC.

Approved programs consist of at least 35 hours of lectures and 50 hours of supervised clinical practice. Most programs can be completed within 6 months of continuous training. For those who are already working as nursing assistants without certifications, they must select a program that can be completed in less than 4 months.

Once you complete your training, you’ll now be able to apply for the NNAAP examination. This exam is a two part exam that comprises of a written/oral exam and a clinical skills test. Candidates must pass both tests in order to gain entry into the Nurse Aide Registry. Each candidate is given a maximum of 3 attempts to pass. If a candidate fails his 3rd attempt, then he will have to complete another NATP before he can reapply once again.

As the economy as it is today, a lot of people are now turning their attentions to the field of health. This field always has plenty of job opportunities waiting as well as numerous chances to climb up the career ladder. One of the best ways to start a career in this field is to become a nursing assistant.

young-nursing-student-giving-course-presentationNursing assistants are very in demand not just in this state, but all over the United States. They can be found working in almost any healthcare facility that you can think of. Nursing assistants are entry-level professionals, which makes it easier and quicker to become one.

The first thing that you’ll need to do is to look for a Nursing Assistant Program or NAP to enroll in. The Department of Social and Health Services monitors all programs that are offered in the state to ensure that the students receive proper training and education. When looking for a program, you just have to make sure that it’s approved by the DSHS before you enroll.

Approved training programs are required to offer at least 35 hours of classroom lectures and laboratory work, and 50 hours of supervised clinical practice. Students are supervised by a qualified CNA instructor during the entire training period. Students will learn about important topics such as infection control, basic nursing care, safety and emergency procedures, personal care, interpersonal skills, patients’ rights and independence, and many more.

Changing careers is no easy task, but that’s what makes becoming a nursing assistant so great. Nursing facilities are allowed to hire a person as a nursing assistant, even without a NA certificate. The person is then given a maximum of 120 days to complete a training program, pass the NNAAP exam, and apply to get into the Nurse Aide Registry. During the training period, the trainee isn’t allowed to perform any procedure or skill that hasn’t been taught in the classroom.

The NNAAP exam is a two part examination that consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a practical skills exam. The knowledge test is initially given as a written exam, but a candidate who has trouble reading can request for an oral exam instead. Candidates can also request for special accommodations for certain disabilities that they might have.

Once you get a CNA certificate, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to further your career. You can get advance certifications, or use your experience as a nursing assistant as a stepping stone to aim for a higher degree. If you want to know other career choices there are in Washington, then just follow this link: http://www.doh.wa.gov/LicensesPermitsandCertificates/ProfessionsNewReneworUpdate/HealthcareProfessionalCredentialingRequirement.aspx.

Nursing assistants are important health care providers in Washington. If you’re thinking about becoming one, then it’s best that you know what the requirements are.

student-of-nursing-program-giving-presentationGetting the Training that You Need

One way of learning how to become a nursing assistant is to enroll in a Nursing Assistant Program or NAP. NAPs are found all across the state and are offered by different healthcare institutions and schools such as hospitals, community colleges, technical and vocational schools, high schools, Red Cross Organization, government organizations, and private training facilities.

General requirements:

–    Age: must be at least 16 years old
–    Criminal Background: must pass both the federal and state criminal background checks
–    English Proficiency: it’s important that a candidate is able to speak and understand Basic English since most of the patients will be speaking the language.
–    Education: Each training facility has its own requirements regarding educational backgrounds. There are some that will only accept those who have a high school diploma or a GED certificate.
–    Health: must be physically healthy and free from any communicable diseases

The great thing about becoming a nursing assistant is the 120-day Rule. This rule allows a nursing facility to hire a person who is not a certified nursing assistant to work as one. That person is then given a maximum of 120 days to get certified. This means that he’ll have to undergo training and testing at the expense of the hiring facility.

The National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Examination

The NNAAP exam is a two part examination that consists of a written/oral test and a skills evaluation exam. Both tests are conducted on the same day at an approved testing facility. The state asked the help of Pearson VUE to assist in conducting, scoring, and releasing the exam results. If a candidate passes both tests, then the candidate will be given a NA certificate.

If a candidate fails, then he can reapply and reschedule for another attempt. During his retest, he will only be required to take the portion that he failed. Each candidate is given a maximum of 3 attempts. Failing for the 3rd time means the candidate must undergo retraining before he can reapply once again.

medical-student-showing-course-displayThe best way to get into the NAR is by passing the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam or NNAAP exam. This exam was developed to test the competency of all aspiring nursing assistants. It’s one way of guaranteeing that the patients receive quality care from their healthcare providers.

Certified nurse aide instruction in this state consists of 85 hours of training. These hours are divided into 35 hours of classroom instructions and 50 hours of supervised clinical practice. You can get a copy of the application forms from either your clinical instructor or from the ADSA. Please make sure that you have all the requirements before submitting it to the NACES. Incomplete applications will not be processed.  All applications and requirements must be sent to:

The first thing that you’ll need to do to become a nursing aide in Virginia is to look for a suitable program to enroll in. It is crucial that you learn all the knowledge and skills that you might need to meet each patient’s individual needs. If you are living in Portsmouth, then you’ll have no problems looking for a program.

nursing-student-woman-at-college-displayApproved training programs in Virginia are required by the state’s Board of Nursing to offer at least 75 hours of training. Like any other program, their curriculum consists of both theory and practical training. Both the practical and theoretical portions of the program are taught simultaneously. All programs are headed by a licensed nurse with at least 2 years of experience working in a long-term care facility.

Most of the training programs last only for about 2 to 6 months. As soon as you complete your training, you’ll be allowed to apply for the state’s certification exam. Nursing students and nursing graduates are also allowed to apply for the exam, even if they weren’t able to attend a CNA program.

The certification exam is the final step in becoming a full-fledged nursing aide. According to the federal and state laws, you can only work in a state-certified healthcare facility if you have a certificate that’s issued by the Board of Nursing. The certification exam is divided into two parts – a written (or oral) test and a random skills evaluation.

The certification exams in Virginia are conducted by NACES with the assistance of Pearson VUE. If you want to know more about the exams, you can download a copy of the Candidate Handbook by visiting www.pearsonvue.com. The handbook also contains a sample knowledge test and a complete skill check list.

If you are able to pass the certification exam, your name will be placed in the Nurse Aide Registry. You’ll be eligible to work as a certified nursing aide so long as your name is on the NAR. To keep it there, you’ll need to renew your certification every 2 years. The BON will send out a notice at least 30 days prior to your certification’s expiration. To make things easier on you, you can just go to www.license.dhp.virginia.gov and renew online.

An active certification is a requirement to work as a nursing assistant in Virginia. The Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act requires that all aspiring nursing assistants to undergo proper training and a certification before working in a state-approved healthcare facility. You can complete a training program and challenge the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Examination (NNAAP exam), or apply for endorsement.

nursing-student-in-scrubs-giving-presentationCNA Certification through Testing

The NNAAP exam was designed to test the competency of every nursing assistant candidate throughout the United States. It was developed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing or NCSBN. It consists of a written exam and a practical skills test. Candidates who have difficulty in reading can request for an oral exam instead, without any additional charges. In order to get certified, candidates must pass both tests.

You can only take the NNAAP exam if you qualify for any of the following routes:

–    New Nursing Assistant
–    Nursing Student
–    Nursing Graduate (includes licensed nurses)
–    Nurse aide with lapsed/expired certification

The most common route taken is the first one. One of the best ways to equip yourself with the needed knowledge and skills to become a nursing assistant is to complete a CNA training course that’s approved by the state’ Board of Nursing. Approved programs consist of 75 hours of lectures and supervised clinical practice. Depending on the program you choose, it can take you from about 8 to 24 weeks to complete a program.

CNA certification through Endorsement

This option is only for nursing assistants who are certified in another state. This lets them transfer their certification and work in Virginia without the need for any testing.  Since each state has its own requirements for endorsement, interested applicants should contact the BON at (804) 367-4569 to discuss the requirements. You can get the application packet by visiting www.dhp.virginia.gov/nursing.

Maintaining your CNA Certification

An initial certification is only valid for one year. The BON will send out a notice at least 30 days prior to your certification’s expiration to remind you to renew it. The good news is you don’t have to mail anything to the BON to renew your certification because you can do it online by going to www.license.dhp.virginia.gov. To qualify for renewal, you must provide proof that you were able to work as a paid nursing assistant within that time for at least one day. After renewing your certification, it will then become valid for 2 years.

Holders who fail to renew their certifications on time are given an additional 90 days to do so. If they let their certifications lapse, they’ll need to submit a reinstatement application and pay the corresponding fee.  After submitting the requirements, the Board will then determine if they will have to take the competency evaluation exam before being reinstated.

This is an independent city that is in the Commonwealth. It is considered as the second-largest city behind Virginia Beach. You can find this city at the core of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area.  According to the census of 2010, their total population had reached up to a total of 242,803. It has a total area of 96.3 sq miles and has a population density of 4,363/sq mile.

The major hospitals that are serving the city are the Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Sentara Leigh Hospital, and Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center. You can also find the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters here. photo attribution: codnewsroom

The first step in becoming a nursing aide is to get into a state-approved CNA program. You must learn the proper knowledge and skills that you might use to take care of the patients. A program can also help you prepare you for the different things that you might encounter once you’re a certified nursing aide.

nurse-student-giving-presentation-at-eventCNA classes in Virginia consists of at least 75 hours of training. These hours are divided into both lectures and supervised clinical practice. Both portions of the training program are taught simultaneously. During the entire program, the students will be supervised by a licensed nurse with background knowledge and experiences on how to handle nursing aide students.

What’s next after training? Well, completing an approved CNA program will make you qualified to apply for the certification exam. A nursing aide can only work full-time if he or she has a certification that’s issued by the state’s Board of Nursing. You can also qualify if you complete at least one semester of nursing school as a nursing student or a nursing graduate.

The certification exam is divided into two parts – a 70 item knowledge test and a random clinical skills demonstration. The knowledge test is initially offered as a written exam, but candidates who have trouble reading can request for an oral exam instead. The payment for both tests (regardless of what type of knowledge test) is $94. This must be sent as either a money order, cashier’s check, or a company check. Personal checks and cash are not accepted.

If a candidate passes both tests, then his name will be entered into the Nurse Aide Registry. This Registry contains all the names of individuals who were able to meet the federal and state training and testing requirements. Employers are required to check each applicant’s name on the list, and only hire them if their name is still in the NAR.

Another way of getting into the NAR and receive a CNA certification is by applying for reciprocity. This process no longer involves taking any additional tests or training. Unfortunately, it is only offered to persons who are already certified as nursing aides in other states. This lets them transfer their certification and work in Virginia if they want to. To qualify, applicants must have a clean record and a valid certification. They must not be in the Abuse Registry and have any records of patient abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of their property.

If you have any questions, feel free to call the Board of Nursing at (804) 367-4569. You can also visit www.dhp.virginia.gov/nursing to:

–    Get a copy of the laws and regulations about nursing aides
–    Change your name on the Nurse Aide Registry once it’s already there
–    Get a copy of the Candidate Handbook
–    Clarify information regarding the Registry

One of the best ways to start a career in the field of health is to become a nurse aide. Nurse aides are important members of the healthcare team that help maintain the continuity of care that patients receive, especially from nurses.

health-care-presentation-at-collegeThe tasks that they do depend on what tasks are delegated by the nurses. They mostly perform basic nursing procedures like taking vital signs, and assist in the patients’ daily activities like bathing, dressing, changing, toileting, exercising, eating, ambulating, and many more.

In order to become one, you must first complete a state-approved training program. Attending a training program will help prepare you for all the things that you might encounter once you become a nursing assistant. This will also allow you to challenge the certification exam afterwards.

Taking the certification exam is a necessary step. A nurse aide can only work in a state-approved healthcare facility if he is certified by the Board of Nursing and if his name in in the Nurse Aide Registry. This exam consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a random skills evaluation. Only candidates who will pass both tests will gain entry into the NAR and receive a certification.

The certification that you’ll receive once you get into the NAR is only basic. This means that there are different programs that you can complete in order to become an advance CNA. An advance training program will either teach new concepts or discuss old ones in more detail. If you are an advanced nurse aide, you’ll be allowed to perform new procedures and take on added responsibilities.

Another way to further your career is to get a medication aide certification. Medication aides, like nurse aides, work under the supervision of registered nurses. They are allowed to provide patients with certain medications. They are also entry-level professionals, which mean that their training and certification process is also quick.

There are a lot of training facilities in the state that offers both CNA and CMA training. Once you complete your training, you can then apply and take their certification exam. Unlike the nurse aide certification exam, their exam consists only of a multiple-choice knowledge test that can be taken on a computer. You can find out more details about their exam by following this link: http://www.dhp.virginia.gov/Forms/nursing/MedAide/Bulletin.pdf.

Looking for a way to start a career in healthcare? Well look no further. The answer to your search is nursing assistance. Certified nursing assistants are entry-level professionals, and are important members of the healthcare team. They assist nurses in providing nursing care to patients who are in different healthcare settings.

nurse-student-at-college-presentationWhat do you need to become a CNA?

Two most important requirements are receiving proper training from a state-approved training facility and taking the certification exam. As you try to meet these two requirements, you’ll also be subjected to physical and medical tests, as well as criminal background checks with fingerprinting.

CNA Training Programs

Nursing assistant training in Virginia complies with the minimum 75-hour training duration requirements of the OBRA. Like any other program, their curriculum is divided into theory and practical training. Both the classroom and practical training are done at the same time.
During the entire training program students are handled by qualified instructors. They are not allowed to perform any procedure that hasn’t been taken up during the lectures. They also aren’t allowed to perform any procedure without the knowledge of their instructors.

Requirements to get into a CNA program

Each training facility has its own requirements to be accepted into their program. However, they do have similar requirements such as the following:

–    Age: must be at least 16 years old
–    English Competency: must understand and speak Basic English
–    Education: the majority of the training programs in Virginia only require their applicants to be able to read and write. However, there are some that require a high school diploma or a GED certificate.
–    Health: must be physically and mentally healthy to take care of different patients.

Taking the Certification Exam

After you complete your training, the next step is to apply for the certification exam and take it. Taking this exam is a final step in becoming a nursing assistant. The certification exam consists of two parts – a written (or oral) test and practical skills test. If you pass both of them, then you’ll receive a CNA certificate. Having the certificate will prove that you were able to meet the federal and state’s training and testing requirements. It will also show your potential employers that you are a competent nursing assistant.

A CNA certification is one of the most important requirements to work as a nursing aide in Virginia. If you had never been a certified nursing aide before, then the only way for you to become certified is to take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Examination or NNAAP exam.

health-care-student-with-displayThis exam is divided into both a knowledge test and a clinical skills test. Both of them are taken on the same day at an approved testing center. The NNAAP exams in this state are conducted by the NACES with the help of Pearson VUE.  If you pass both tests, then you’ll be given a certification that’s issued by the state’s Board of Nursing.

You can apply for the NNAAP exams through any of the following eligibility routes:
–    New Nursing Aide (those who took the NNAAP exam and failed can reapply through this route)
–    Nursing Student
–    Nursing Graduate
–    Lapsed Certificate Holder

Among the different routes, the most common one is the first. To qualify for that route, you’ll need to successfully pass a state-certified program that’s approved by the state’s BON. You can find a suitable program offered through hospitals, nursing homes, community colleges, high schools, vocational and technical schools, government organizations, assisted living centers, long-term care facilities, and other training institutions and schools.

CNA training consists of 75 hours of lectures and supervised clinical practice. Both theory and practical training are done concurrently. Examples of the topics that students are taught include infection control, patients’ rights and independence, safety and emergency care, basic nursing procedures, personal care, communication skills, and many more.  The training programs in the state can be completed within 2 to 6 months.

A certified nurse aide from another state can transfer and work in Virginia by applying for reciprocity. This process will allow them to work in Virginia without any need for further testing. To be eligible, they must have a current certification and a clean record. Those who are listed in the Abuse Registry are not allowed to work in a state-approved health care facility. The duration of the process will depend on how fast your state can provide proof of your certification as a nursing aide.

When you enroll, you’ll spend at least 75 hours in the classroom for your lectures and in the clinical area for the practical training portion of the program.

#2 Passing the Background Checks for Criminal Records

Before you even consider pursuing this line of work, you must make sure that you’ll pass the criminal background checks. There had been numerous incidents involving healthcare professionals throughout the years. That is why the state now requires all aspiring nurse aides to undergo the background checks with fingerprinting.

When the checks are done vary. Most programs do the checks as soon as a student is accepted. However, there are also other programs that will only accept a student if he has already passed the criminal background checks.

#3 Taking the NNAAP exam

The NNAAP exam consists of a written/oral test and a random skills evaluation. Both tests are conducted on the same day at a Regional Testing Center. Candidates have a maximum of 2 hours to answer all 70 multiple-choice questions for the knowledge test, and 30 minutes for the skills tests. Candidates who are able to pass both tests will get a CNA certificate that’s issued by the state’s Board of Nursing.

Maintaining your CNA Certification

This certification is the one thing that all potential employers will look for when you go applying for work. You are allowed to work in a state-approved nursing facility so long as you keep your certification valid. To do this, you’ll need to renew it every 2 years. You’ll be required to provide proof of employment as a paid nurse aide within that time to qualify for renewal. No nurse aide is allowed to continue working with an expired certification.

medical-student-with-college-presentationWhat makes a great CNA?

Well, genuine care for other people is one of the top things that will make you a great nursing assistant. If you love what you do, you’re surely bound to excel at it, or look for ways to constantly improve yourself. This desire to help will also be very beneficial since the tasks that a nursing assistant does can vary from time to time, and can be a difficult for most people.

What are the requirements to be a CNA?

A person can only work as a nursing assistant in Virginia if he has a nursing assistant certificate that’s issued by the state’s Board of Nursing. The main goal of the Nursing Assistant certification process is to get your name into the Nurse Aide Registry. Even with a certificate, employers will still check if your name is on the Nurse Aide Registry. They will only hire those whose names are still in the NAR.

How do you get your name into the NAR?

There are two ways to do this, unfortunately, the other one is only for individuals who are already certified nursing assistants from other state. The only option left is to take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program examination (NNAAP Exam).

Before you can take the NNAAP exam, you must successfully complete a state-approved training program that’s approved by the state’s BON. Nursing students and graduates are also allowed to apply for the exam even if they do not complete a program.

What is the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Examination?

This is a two part exam that was developed to test the competency of all nursing assistant candidates. It consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a practical skills evaluation. This test will help assure that patients will only receive quality care from nursing assistants. Candidates must pass both tests in order to get into the NAR.

If a candidate fails, he or she can reapply and reschedule to try again. During the retesting, the candidate will only be required to take the test that he or she failed. Unlike most states, there is no limit on who many times you take the exam, just as long as you pass within 2 years from the first time that a candidate takes it.

Employers will always verify their applicants’ certification before hiring them.

The certification exam consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a random skills evaluation. Both tests are taken on the same day at a Regional Testing Center. To get a certification, candidates must pass both tests. If you want to know more about the certification exam, you can download a copy of the CNA Candidate Handbook by following this link: http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/075300.pdf.

The Nurse Aide Registry is a master list of all the nursing aides who were able to meet the federal and state’s training and testing requirements.  A person may only work as a nursing aide in a state-certified nursing facility if his name is on the Registry. There are two general ways to get your name entered into the NAR: you can either take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam or apply for CNA Endorsement.

medical-simulator-for-nursesChallenging the NNAAP Exam

The NNAAP exam is divided into two parts – a written/oral test and a random skills evaluation. Both tests are conducted on the same day at an approved testing facility with the help of Pearson VUE. In order to gain entry into the NAR, a candidate must pass both tests.

Before you can take on the exam, you’ll need to establish eligibility by successfully completing a state-certified training program. You can either enroll in a CNA training program or complete at least one semester of nursing school. The former is the more common and quicker route.

CNA training in the state takes about 2 to 6 months to complete. Their curriculum consists of at least 75 hours of both lectures and supervised clinical practice. Students are handled by a qualified nursing aide instructor during the entire duration of the program. They are taught basic nursing skills and principles like infection control, mental health, communication techniques, emergency care, nutrition, vital signs, and many more.

CNA Certification through Endorsement

This process is only offered to individuals who are already certified in another state as nursing aides. This process allows them to work in Virginia without the need to take any tests. To be eligible for endorsement, they must have a valid certification and a clean record. Their names must not be on the Abuse Registry. Each state has its own set of requirements for Endorsement, that’s why interested individuals are asked to contact the Board of Nursing at (804) 367-4569.

The endorsement process varies depending from state to state. The duration is greatly affected on how fast a state can produce proof of certification for the applying applicant. To avoid any problems with waiting for the unknown, we suggest that you contact your state’s NAR and ask.

It is a two part examination that is divided into multiple-choice written/oral knowledge test and a random clinical skills evaluation. Both tests must be passed in order to get a CNA certification.

A nursing aide from another state can transfer his or her certification and work in Virginia through endorsement. Applicants who meet all the requirements may no longer be required to take a test. To be eligible, the applicant must have a current certification and a clean record. He or she must not be on the Abuse Registry.  The exact duration of the endorsement process can vary depending on how fast the applicant’s state can produce proof of certification.

There are plenty of opportunities waiting for those who are in this line of work. If you want to increase your chances, then you should try to get an advanced CNA certification. All you have to do to get one is to complete a state-approved advanced training program for nursing assistants and apply for a certification by sending the application form to the BON.  You can get more information by visiting www.dhp.virginia.gov.

One of the best ways to start a career in the field of health is to become a certified nurse aide. What makes this career different from others? Well, unlike other careers such as nursing, you don’t have to spend years of education before you can start working as one. All you need to start working as a nursing aide is to get proper training by enrolling in a CNA program and get a certification from the Board of Nursing.

nurse-helping-doctorThe OBRA of ’87 has required that all programs must offer at least 75 hours of training. All training curriculum must consist of both lectures and practical training. Every program must also be headed by a registered nurse with enough nursing experience working in a long-term care center and has completed continuing education on teaching nurse aide students.

General Requirement to be accepted into a CNA program:

–    Age: you must be at least 16 years old
–    Education: there are no educational prerequisites in this state. You just need to know how to read and write.
–    English: aspirants must know how to speak and understand English.
–    Health: Must be mentally and physically healthy enough to take care of the patients. They must also be free of any communicable diseases such as TB.
–    Criminal Background: must pass the national (federal and state) criminal background checks

Even as a student, you will already have the opportunity to see what it’s like to work as a full-fledged nurse aide, especially if you enroll in a facility-based program. Since you’ll still be under training at that time, you will not be allowed to perform any procedure that has not yet been tackled in the classroom. Prior to handling any patient, you’ll first be taught on important topics like infection control, safety and emergency care, nursing procedures, respecting the patient’s rights and independence, and many more.

As soon as you’ve completed all your training, you can now apply for the NNAAP exam. Applicants can apply for the state exam by submitting their school transcripts, completed application, valid photo I.D, passing a state of Virginia and U.S federal background check, and testing fees. Taking this exam is the final step in becoming a nurse aide. The NNAAP exam is divided into two parts – a written/oral test and a skills evaluation exam. You must pass both tests to get into the NAR and receive your certification.

The exam results are normally released on the same day if there are no technical problems. Upon successfully completing both the training and taking the test, the applicant will be put on the Virginia Nurse Aide Registry and be able to get a job as a nursing assistant. The listing is good for a two year period.

A CNA certification will make you eligible to work as a full-time nurse aide in any health care facility in the state. You can use your certification as proof that you are a competent nurse aide. Additionally, if you have previously completed a nurses aide training course in another state you can apply for reciprocity by showing proof that you completed training.

Where to work as a CNA?

You can work in any health care facility as a nurse aide so long as your name is on the

Registry and you have a valid certification. Examples of the most common places where you can find a certified nursing assistant include:

–    Hospitals
–    Nursing Homes
–    Assisted Living Centers
–    Rehabilitation Clinics
–    Long-term Care Facilities
–    Clinics
–    Patient’s own home

If you wish to further your knowledge and skills as a nursing aide, then you can enroll in a state-certified advanced training program. These programs will teach you procedures that were not taught in your usual program. Once you complete the training program, all you need to do next is to submit your application for the advance certification. You won’t need to take another certification exam.
