One of the best ways to start a career in the field of health in Washington is to become a nursing assistant-certified (NAC). They are one of the most important members of the healthcare team. Nursing assistants work under the supervision of registered nurses and help take care of patients by providing nursing and nursing-related care to patients who are in different health care settings.
The only way for you to work as a nursing assistant is if your name is on the Nurse Aide Registry. One way of getting your name entered is by taking the NNAAP exam. This exam was created to test all aspiring healthcare workers in terms of knowledge and skills. You may take the test if you meet any of the following routes:
New Nursing Assistant
These are individuals who had never been certified as a nursing assistant before, but have successfully completed a state-approved NAC training program.
Student/Graduate Nurse
Since nursing assistant training programs are somewhat similar to a registered and licensed nursing education program, these types of students and graduates can apply for the NNAAP exam if they wish to become certified to work in health care institutions located within the state..
Military Nursing Assistants
This route is only for individuals who have completed a military medic or corpsman training program. Examples of approved programs include U.S. Army 91-C Program, Aide Force Apprentice (Specialist) Program, or the Navy’s Basic Hospital Corps School.
Out-of-State Student/Graduate Nursing Assistant
An individual who received his or her training from another state can apply for the NNAAP exam if he or she has completed an OBRA approved program or experienced at least 35 hours of classroom lectures and 50 hours of clinical practice.
Lapsed Nursing Assistant
NAC certifications are only valid for 2 years. Holders must renew their certification before it expires. If their certification expires, they can reactivate it by taking the NNAAP exam. If a holder does not renew it within 3 years, then the holder must undergo retraining and retesting.
The National Nurse Aide Assessment Program
The NNAAP exam is divided into a multiple-choice knowledge test and a skills evaluation exam. Candidates have the option to take the knowledge test as a written or oral exam. Candidates will only get into the NAR if they pass both tests.
