Receiving the proper training is the first step in becoming a nursing assistant in the State of Washington. Approved training programs are required to offer at least 85 hours of training. The training consists of both lectures and supervised clinical practice. Completing an approved CNA program is one way of becoming eligible to apply for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Examination or NNAAP exam.
Students who are trained in an LPN or RN who meet the minimum requirements are also allowed to apply for the NNAAP exam if they wish to pursue a career as a nursing assistant-certified. This is also applicable to persons who are trained as a military medic, or corpsman.
The NNAAP exam is the final challenge that you must take before you can work as a full-time nursing assistant. This is a two part examination that consists of a written/oral test and a skills evaluation exam. If you pass both tests, then your name will be entered into the Nurse Aide Registry or NAR. According to the law, a person’s name must be on the NAR within 3 days after starting work in any healthcare facility.
Those who are certified will need to renew their certification on or before their birthday every year. At this time there are no continuing education requirements to renew. A certified nursing assistant from another state can transfer and work in Washington by applying for endorsement. Interested applicants can get a copy of the Out-of-State Application by visiting www.doh.wa.gov/Nrs_asst.
Names on the Registry aren’t permanent. In order to keep your name on the registry, as well as your eligibility to work as a nursing assistant, you’ll need to renew your certification every two years. To help make the renewal process easier, you can now renew your certification online. All you have to do is to follow this link: http://www.doh.wa.gov/LicensesPermitsandCertificates/ProfessionsNewReneworUpdate/LicenseRenewals.aspx
To avoid jeopardizing your name on the Registry, you must keep your record on the Registry current. Please inform the Registry if you ever change your name or address. A written notification must be sent to both the ADSA and the state’s DOH. You can get the necessary form by going to http://www.doh.wa.gov/LicensesPermitsandCertificates/ProfessionsNewReneworUpdate/ChangeyourContactorAddressInformation.aspx.
