If you meet these basic competencies, you may then enroll in a training program.

college-students-at-career-fairThe program should be certified by the state so that you can apply for the license exams after you complete your training. Your training will be divided in to 75 hours of classroom lectures and 100 hours of skills training. You must pass the license exams so that you will have your license/certification because the state does not allow its nursing assistants to handle patients without one.

If you already have a nursing assistant license that was issued from a different state, then you may apply for reciprocity. Since you have already passed your state’s license exams, you will no longer be required to retake it.  When applying, you have to make sure that your license is still active and that you have a good relationship with your state. You will be asked to provide a copy of your certification, exam results, and the results for the background checks. These will ensure that you have taken the proper education and training and have no records that prevent you from working in this state.

The demand for nursing assistants throughout the United States is increasing every year. This growth is believed to continue up until the end of the decade. If you are thinking starting a career as a nursing assistant, then this is the perfect time for you do to so.

nurses-on-stairsIn order to be approved to work in the state of California as a nursing assistant, you must have a CNA license. This means that you have to undergo the different requirements of the state like completing a state-approved training program, and passing the state competency exams, as well as the federal and the state background checks.

Requirements to become a CNA

To work as a nursing assistant, you must get a CNA certification. There are 3 main requirements to get a CNA certificate. This includes the following:
1.    Completing a state-approved CNA training program
2.    Passing the federal and state criminal background checks
3.    Passing the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Exam

CNA Training Programs

There are plenty of nursing assistant programs that are found in the state. Each of these programs has different prerequisites upon enrollment. Some of them might require you to have some previous experience before you can be accepted. You will be taught in various skills and knowledge like basic patient care, infection controls, patients’ nutrition, different medical terms, as well as emergency procedures.

Training programs in California offer 150 hours of classroom lessons and supervised clinical practice. Because of the demand for nursing assistants, training programs are now being offered by institutions and schools such as nursing homes, hospitals, vocational and technical colleges, rehabilitation centers, government organizations, and private training centers.

If you are enrolled in a facility-based program, you can start working as a nursing assistant if the facility takes the responsibility for all your actions. Since you are still under training you are not allowed to perform any nursing procedure that has not been taught in the classroom or without the presence of the Instructor. To continue working as a nursing assistant in the facility you are already in, you must get certified within 120 days from the start of your work.

Criminal Background Checks

Most background checks are done when a student is enrolled in a program. There are some programs however, that require you to present a background check before you can enroll. The background checks with fingerprinting in California are done through the Live Scan Services. The training facility is required by the ATCS to provide a copy of each student’s completed Request for Live Scan Services prior to the start of the clinical practice. No student is allowed to handle any patient without undergoing the background checks.

National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Exam

After you complete the program, you can then apply for the state license exams. Another important requirement that you must do before applying is that you must pass the background checks. Once those two are done all that are left are minor requirements like passing immunization records, complete application forms, transcript of record, and paying the fees for the tests.

The NNAAP exam consists of a written/oral knowledge test and a skills evaluation exam. Only those who are able to complete an approved training program may apply for the exam. Candidates are required to pass all the tests within 3 attempts to get certified. If you fail your 3rd attempt, you will have to undergo retraining.

On your exam day, please arrive at least 20 minutes before the actual scheduled time to avoid being late. Latecomers are not allowed to enter the exam area and take the test. Please remember that all payments are permanent and non-refundable.

The completion of a state-approved training program is one of the most important requirements in applying for a nurse aide license. You cannot work in this state if you do not have a license. You can only get a license if you pass the license exams that are conducted by Prometric.

nurse-examination-990232To complete a program, you must have at least 150 hours in both lectures and skills training. To make sure that you will be eligible to apply for the CNA license exams after you complete your training, you must make certain that the program you enroll in is approved by the Division of Long Term Care Resident’s Protection. One of the most common ways for you to become a nursing assistant is by getting the proper training from state-approved CNA programs. You can find that these programs are offered by community training centers, nursing homes, and other institutions. According to the latest list of the Department of Public Health, there are about 155 certified programs that are found all over the state. students-in-classroom-listening-to-teacherAfter you complete your training, you can then apply for the license exams of this state. This is a necessary step since you will not be allowed to work as a nursing assistant in Connecticut. LPNs and RNs, as well as those who have taken the fundamentals of nursing and had training similar to those that are offered in CNA programs may also apply. When applying, you will need to submit a complete application form, which can be found at www.prometric.com, along with the necessary documents like proof of your training, fingerprint cards, ID photo, and the payment for the different fees. You must also undergo physical exams to determine that you are not carrying any contagious diseases. A common requirement for all applicants is the submission of the results of their background checks for criminal records. All applications are forwarded to Thomson Prometric since they are in charge of handling the license exams.

The license exams for this state are composed of two parts, a written and skills evaluation exam. These exams will cover all the topics and skills that were taught to you during your training. To get your license, you must pass both parts. It is the responsibility of the Department to issue certifications/ licenses for those who have successfully passed the license exams.

inside-college-classroomAn important requirement for all applicants, including those who wish to apply for reciprocity, is passing the federal and state background checks. Having records of abuse or offenses involving drugs and other similar acts can greatly affect your application.  During your class training you will need at least 100 hours’ worth of classroom training and 16 hours of clinical practice. Most programs will last from two months up to six. You can then take the examination to become a certified nursing assistant.

The first part of the license exams is the written examination. In this part, you will be given 90 minutes to answer all 60 questions. These questions will all be multiple-choice. Out of all the items, there will be 10 questions which will not be scored since they are pretest questions and were added for statistical purposes. The questions will focus on the three domains, which are about the different roles of a nursing assistant, the promotion of functioning and health of the resident, and the promotion of safety. As for the second exam, out of the 25 basic nursing competency skills that were taught to you during your training, only 5 of them will be tested. The skills to be performed will be randomly selected by a computer. You will be given a simple scenario where you will perform all the procedures while being observed by a nurse aide evaluator. There are some scenarios where the evaluator will also play a particular role, either as a patient/resident or a healthcare team member.
