A career in the field of health can be very satisfying and rewarding. You get to help people with their health care needs and have plenty of opportunity to advance your career at the same time. People who have a genuine interest in helping other people are best suited for a career in health care. One of the best ways to jump-start a career in this field is to become a certified nursing assistant.
What is a Certified Nursing Assistant?
These are individuals who received the training to provide patients with their needed nursing and nursing-related care. Nursing assistants, or sometimes called nurse aides, work under the supervision of licensed nurses and other members of the health care team. The tasks that they perform greatly depend on which tasks are delegated by the nurses.
What does it take to be a CNA?
First of all you must be at least 16 years old to enroll in a training program. Secondly, it is important that you pass the national criminal background checks. You will not be allowed to complete a training program if you fail to pass the criminal background checks. You must also be physically fit to take care of the patients as well as having complete immunizations.
Once you meet those prerequisites you may get accepted into a training program. Each training program has its own requirements for enrollment. Approved programs are required by the state to offer at least 75 hours of training. Their training curriculum consists of both lectures and supervised clinical practice. Depending on which program you select, it can take you from about 2 to 6 months to complete your training.
After completing your training you will become eligible to apply for the NNAAP exam. This is a two part examination that consists of a 70 item written/oral test and a practical skills evaluation. Both of these tests are taken on the same day at approved Regional Testing Centers. The state has asked Pearson VUE to help conduct, score, and release the exam results. Candidates who are able to pass both tests will get a certification and will gain entry into the Nurse Aide Registry.
The Nurse Aide Registry
According to the law, only nursing assistants who are on the Nurse Aide Registry are allowed to work in a state-approved nursing facility. Employers are required to verify each applicant’s certification before hiring them. They can check their certifications by calling the Board of Nursing at (804) 367-4569 or by going to www.license.dhp.virginia.gov. CNAs can also visit the link provided to check their own status as a certified nursing assistant.
