The first step in becoming a nursing aide is to find a CNA course that you can enroll in. You have to make sure that the program you select is certified by the state. This is to make sure that you will be allowed to apply for the state’s competency exams after you graduate from your training. Most of the training programs in the state can be completed within an average of 2 to 6 months of training. When you complete your training, you will have a total of 30 hours of lectures and a minimum of 75 hours of clinical experience. Once you meet these requirements, you will then be able to take the license examinations for you to be certified and eligible to be hired at long term care facilities and health care centers in the state.
The competency exams for this state are conducted by the Ivy Tech Community College. You can reach them at 317-917-5948 with any questions you may have or to set up a test date. This is where you will send your payment for the exam fees once you get approval from the board to take it. Having records such as abuse or theft can be grounds for the rejection of your application. The state will allow you to proceed if you are not able to pass the federal and state background checks. Nursing aides from others state are also required to pass the criminal background checks when they apply for reciprocity; that is why it is very important to have a good relationship with their previous state. Aside from that, another important requirement when applying is having a valid license or an active status.
