A practical means of entering the medical field is to become a nurse aide. In Ohio, certified nurse aides are known as state-tested nurse aides or STNAs. These are individuals who help the nurses take care of the patients by providing them with nursing care. Since they are working mainly under the supervision of a registered nurse, the tasks that they will perform for the patients will depend on what the nurse delegates to them.

nursing-assistant-student-demonstrationIf you are planning on working long-term as a nurse aide, you must first get certified by passing the state’s competency exams. If you are able to pass both the written and practical skills portions, your name will be entered on the Ohio Nurse Aide Registry. The Registry is a master’s list of all the individuals who have proven themselves competent in both skill and knowledge to become a nurse aide. Nurse aides from other states may also enter Ohio’s NAR by applying for reciprocity.

A licensed facility may temporarily hire you as a nurse aide and work there. This time is known in the state as the “4-month grace period”. Since this period is cumulative, every day that you are hired as a nurse aide, regardless of employer, will add to your grace period. An individual is only allowed to continue working beyond the grace period if the individual has proven himself or was deemed competent in delivering nursing care by the Director of Health; the individual has passed the required training and state testing, and the hiring facility has received information from the Registry that the individual has met the competency requirements.

While still under the nursing facility, individuals who are not yet certified are enrolled by their employer into a state-approved training program. These programs last 5 to 8 weeks in all. A temporary nurse aide must become certified within 4 months from the start of his work in order to prevent any interruptions. For those who already took up the Fundamentals of Nursing, and simply want a review of what they learned, they can enroll in a state-approved 2-week refresher course.

Getting a CNA certification is a requirement to work in the state of North Carolina. When you get certified, it also means that your name is added to the Nurse Aide Registry. The only way to do that is to pass the competency evaluation exam, which is conducted by Pearson VUE. This exam is only available to those who were able to establish eligibility through:

•     Completing a N. C. -approved training course
•    Completing a refresher course – which is common for those who are repeating the exams
•    Completing the a state-certified training course from a different state
•    Graduating from a nursing education program

nurse-friends-outsideThe advantage of completing a N. C. -approved training course is that once you graduate from the course, you will be allowed to work as a nursing assistant for up to 4 months while waiting to take the competency exam. If you get hired as an employee during those months, you will no longer be required to pay the exam fee. For individuals who get hired by a Medicaid/Medicare nursing facility within 12 months from getting certified, they may be eligible for reimbursement. That is why it is important to keep all the original receipts.

For those who need to pay for their own exams, initial takers are required to pay a total of $101 for both the written and skills exam. Pearson VUE does not charge anything extra for those who opt to take the oral exam. Re-takers are only required to take the exams that they failed in. For those taking only the knowledge test (written/oral test), they will pay $24. The skills exam only costs $77. Since the applications for the exams are now done online (https://i7lp.integral7.com), exam fees may be paid by the use of a credit card or a pre-paid credit card.

To get on the Registry, you must pass all the exams within 3 attempts. If you feel that you are not yet ready, you are also given a maximum of 2 years, from the day you completed your training, to get certified. Once you pass the two year mark or still failed after your 3rd attempt, you will no longer be able to reapply for the exams unless you undergo retraining. For more information on how to become a nursing assistant, you can download a copy of the NA Candidate Handbook from http://asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/073400.pdf.

If you want to become a nursing assistant, then the first thing that you need to do is to enroll in a CNA course. Training that was done in a different state will not make you eligible to take the Mississippi license exams. The training course has to be approved by the state where you are planning to take the exams in.

nursing-assistant-skills-practiceIf you have completed your training in a different state, you can take the exams there and apply for reciprocity later on. Reciprocity is the process by which a nursing assistant that is currently registered to a different state’s NAR is transferred and given authorization to work in a different state. When you apply, you must have a good relationship with your state and an active license. Having records of negligence and abuse will make you unable to work as a nursing assistant in Mississippi.

A nursing assistant whose license has been revoked because of neglect or abuse may still get it back. The individual will have to undergo retesting on all the tests of the NNAAP. The individual must pass all the tests for his renewal to be considered. When applying, the individual will have to give his certification/license number and the date the certification/license was revoked.

To learn more about scheduling a test date or for other questions call Pearson Vue at 1-888-204-6213. If you have specific questions regarding certification requirements in the state you can contact the Mississippi State Department of Health at 601-364-1100.
