Once done with the program, you are then ready to take the state exams.

smiling-hugging-elderly-grandma-09332If you want to work in Minnesota as a nursing assistant, then you will have to get your name on the Registry. There are two ways for you to get that. One ways is to apply for it once you pass the license exams and the other one is by applying for reciprocity. The latter one is only applicable for those who are already on a NA Registry but only at a different state.

Some candidates who feel they have the knowledge and experience can opt to challenge the written and skills competency evaluation without going through a training program. This is allowed in the state of Minnesota, however you can not work in any facility until you have been certified. If you want to get some help in preparing for the license exams, you can enroll in a state-certified training program. Many of the programs can be completed within 4 months off continuous training. All you have to do is to complete 75 hours of training. Afterwards, it’s all about taking on the written exams and the skills evaluation portion of the license exams.

When applying for reciprocity, the candidate will need to fill out the Interstate Endorsement Forms. These forms can be downloaded at http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/fpc/profinfo/narinfo/Interstate2.pdf. The files will already contain the necessary information that the candidate should follow. For the need of further assistance, the candidate can call the Registry at (651) 215-8705.

Becoming a nursing assistant in the state of Minnesota is one of the best ways for you to start your career in the medical field. This is one of the states that are very open when it comes to nursing aides. Even those that finished their training from a different state still have a chance to work there. All they have to do to be able to work is to apply for reciprocity. Those who have experience can challenge the competency exam if they wish. However, most applicants will want to enroll in a stat authorized instruction course to get the hands-on skills practice and classroom coursework to help them prepare for the exam.

granny-in-wheelchair-77023To work in Minnesota as a nursing assistant, you must have your name on the state’s Registry. This entails passing the state examination provided by the Pearson Vue company. You can speak to one of their support staff about testing by calling 1-800-274-0504. They can also provide practice tests as well as direct you to the necessary application forms.

If you are already a CNA from a different state and wish to transfer, you can apply for reciprocity by filling out the Interstate Endorsement Forms, which you can download at http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/fpc/profinfo/narinfo/Interstate2.pdf.  It will usually take 30 business days for its processing. If your application is incomplete, it will further delay the processing. Remember that the state of Minnesota does not charge any processing fees to get on the Registry.

Once your name is on the Registry, you will have to maintain that status in order for you to remain eligible to work as a nursing assistant. To do so, you must have worked for at least 8 hours as a paid nursing assistant in an approved healthcare facility. Your certification/license must be renewed every two years. Your tasks must be the same as those done in a nursing home. Orientations and trainings are not counted in the 8 working hours.

Inservice is not one of the requirements in order to remain on the Registry. Federal law however has required facilities to provide 12 hours of inservice every year. This of course, is only applicable to certain criteria. If you have any questions regarding inservice, you should ask the facility’s survey team. Call a representative at the MN Department of Health at 651-215-8705 to get further details.

If you are planning to enter the medical field as a nursing assistant or aide, you should know what you are getting into. Nursing assistants are tasked with helping the patients using the basic healthcare skills. Workers in this occupation help with their hygiene, maintaining the room they are staying in, as well as other forms of help. Whey they work, they work under the supervision of a registered nurse.

working on crafts at the long term care homeTo become certified to work you will need to complete the state license exams. Those who don’t have the experience or training can join a state approved instructional course to learn the basics. Training will offer you 75 hours of hands-on practice using common job tasks as well as give you theoretical knowledge coursework.

After your class is complete you can schedule a date to take the test through the Pearson Vue Company. They can be reached via phone to find a testing location or make a reservation at 1-800-274-0504.

In MN, it is not a requirement to take a class, and the state offers those who come from another state to transfer their license. To do so you would need to fill out the Interstate Endorsement Form. You can send the form electronically to help speed up the process if you wish. To learn more about this process call the Nursing Assistant Registry at 1-800-397-6124.

The Nurse Aide Registry does not keep the records of background checks. If you have questions pertaining to them, then you should call the Department of Human Services, Background Studies and Investigation Section at 651-296-3971.

If a CNA has any records of maltreatment that is on the Registry and someone calls to verify it, the caller will then be transferred to a Registry representative. Having records of maltreatment that are on the Registry will prohibit an individual from working in a nursing facility as a CNA.

Before any complaints are entered on the records, an investigation must be done before in order to substantiate it. Investigations are usually done when someone calls the Office of Health Facility Complaints and reports a CNA. The OHFC can be contacted by calling (651) 201-4201.
