With the increasing demand for nurse aides in Michigan, there is also an increase in the number of training facilities that now offer CNA programs. These facilities include colleges, healthcare centers, and community training centers. With this, there is also plenty of job opportunities for those who already have a license.
To become a certified nurse aide and be allowed to work in care facilities in the state you will need to sign-up for a training class and pass a competency exam. According to current rules, programs must offer at least 75 hours of training that includes practice of 51 key tasks. After completing the course, you will be eligible to take the exams. These are a knowledge test and a clinical skills test. Once you pass, you become licensed and added to the state registry. Registered Nurses who want to take a break from their regular work may apply to become either a nurse aide training program coordinator or a primary instructor. If you wish to become a coordinator, then you must be a RN with a valid license in the state of Michigan and you must also have a Train-the-Trainer Certificate. As a coordinator, it will be your task to oversee all the administrative responsibilities of the program.
If you want to become a Primary Instructor, then you must be an RN with a Train-the-Trainer certificate. You must also have at least 1 year of experience in taking care of the elderly in any long-term care setting. As a primary instructor, you will be in charge of every aspect of the program, which would include the classroom, laboratory, and clinical training.
The state of Michigan allows nurse aides that are certified from a different state to avoid retaking training and to apply to take the exams directly. If they wish to work in the state, they will have to apply for reciprocity. When they apply, they should have a good status with the state that they come from and are required to produce documents that show their experience and training.
