To become a nursing assistant one must first know the different requirements of the state. This means that you must complete a CNA course, and pass the state competency exams, as well as the federal and the state background checks. Nurse aide courses are open to anyone who wishes to have a career in healthcare as a nursing assistant as long as they submit proper identifying documentation, pass a physical exam, and background check . There are also online courses that are offering similar training, however you will still need to do the clinical portion of the class at an offline facility. There are some online courses that are approved by the ATCS of the state. For more information, please call the Public Health Licensing & Certification program at (916) 552-8700.

nurses-posing-on-graduation-dayDuring your classes you will learn a variety of common nursing related skills that are necessary for the job. The course will give you hands-on practice using these skills in a medical environment that is overseen by an experienced registered nurse. Generally instruction will include 75 hours of classroom training and 16 hours of clinical training. Depending on the program you enroll in training could take from 6 to 8 weeks or longer. Once you have completed the class requirement you will want to schedule a date to take the license exams.

You need to get a CNA certification to work as a nurse aide in California. According to the OBRA of ’87, only certified nurse aides are allowed to work in state-approved nursing facilities. The most common way to get a CNA certification is to challenge the certification exam.

The certification exam is divided into two parts. The first part is the knowledge test. This test is initially offered as a written exam but an oral version of the knowledge test may be taken if the candidate has trouble reading English. Regardless of the type of exam, candidates are given a maximum of two hours to answer all 70 questions. The questions are taken from different nursing topics such as personal skills, psychosocial skills, roles and responsibilities of a nurse aide, and many more.

The second part of the exam is the clinical skills tests. In this part, candidates are placed in a certain scenario and are asked to perform 5 nursing procedures/skills. They are given only 25 minutes to perform all procedures/skills in front of an evaluator. The first of the skills will always be proper hand washing while the others are randomly selected from a set Skill List. Candidates are required to perform each procedure/skill with at least 80% competency to pass this portion.

Candidates will only get certified if they are able to pass both portions of the certification exam.  Normally, the results of the exam are returned on the same day. If you pass all the tests your name will be forwarded to the Aide and Technician Certification Section so it can be added to the Nurse Aide Registry. The ATCS will then mail you your CNA certificate within 10 business days after passing.

The certification exam is only available to those who have received state-approved training. You can establish eligibility through the following routes:

•    Completing an CDPH-certified 150-hour Nurse Aide Training Program
•    Completing a Nursing Education Program as a nursing graduate, registered nurse, or a licensed practical nurse
•    Completing Military Training as a medic or military corpsman

The state is also open to reciprocity. This process lets certified nurse aides from other states to transfer and work in California without any need for further training or testing. They can only apply for reciprocity if they were able to maintain a clean record and a current or active certification.

A lot of people are now wondering how to become a nursing assistant. There are three general things that you need to become a CNA. These include:

registered-nurses-on-graduation1.    Completing a nurse aide training program
2.    Passing the criminal background checks
3.    Challenging the state certification exam

In order to become a nursing assistant you must enroll in a CNA training program. Completing a program is necessary for you to take the license exams and be placed on the nurse aide registry. You will not be allowed to work in a long-term healthcare facility without a license and they must be renewed every 24 months.

To ensure that you will be eligible to apply, the program you enroll in should be approved by the Aide and Technician Certification Section or ATCS of the state. You must also pass the state and federal background checks for criminal record. There are some felonies and misdemeanors that will greatly affect your application. These include negligence, and violent acts. Call the ATCS at (916) 327-2445 to get answers to any questions about qualifying and receiving certification.

One of the most common questions that aspirants ask is if they need to have a college degree in order to become a nursing assistant. The answer to that question is no. Proof of education is a requirement to enroll in a CNA training course. Most training courses only require their students to have a high school diploma, GED certificate, or something equivalent. Other requirements to get accepted in a course include:

•    Age: at least 18 years old
•    English Competency: must be able to understand Basic English
•    Criminal Record: must not have any records that prevent one from getting a CNA certification
•    Health: must be physically healthy and free of any communicable ailments.

CNA training in California takes 150 hours to complete. Their training curriculum is divided into 50 hours of classroom lesson and at least 100 hours of clinical practice. Students are placed under the care of a certified clinical instructor. They are not allowed to perform any procedure that has not yet been taught in the classroom or without the presence of the instructor.

Most background checks are done when a student is already enrolled in a course. They are done through the Live Scan Services and are paid for by the training institution. No student is allowed to handle any patient without passing the background checks.

After you complete your training, you will be able to submit your application form to your local Regional Testing Center. The exam consists of a written/oral knowledge test and a skills evaluation exam. Candidates must pass all the tests within 3 attempts to get certified. If you fail for the 3rd time you will be required to complete another training program before you can reapply.

Registered nurses, nursing students/graduates, and LPNs are allowed to challenge the certification exam directly since their training is similar to the ones offered by a CNA program. When they submit their applications they must provide proof of education and training such as a copy of their diplomas or transcript of records.

California is one of the best places to start a career in the field of medicine. The demand for healthcare providers is now increasing because of the high number of elderly in the population. Two of the most in demand healthcare providers today are nursing aides and home health aides.

nurses-happy-about-graduatingTo become a nursing aide you must first enroll in a state-approved Nurse Aide Training Program or NATP. NATPs in California are required to offer 150 hours of training. Their curriculum consists of both theoretical lessons and supervised practical training. Students are supervised by registered nurses with background experiences in training adults. Depending on the program you enroll in, it can take you from 2 to 6 months to complete a program. The body that is in charge of approving school programs is called the (TPRU) Training Program Review Unit and can be reached to verify a facility by calling (916) 552-8873.

The state requires all students to be fingerprinted and undergo the background checks. Criminal background checks in California are done through the Live Scan Services. They are required for the purpose of protecting the interest of the patients. No student is allowed to proceed to the clinical area unless they pass a copy of their Request for Live Scan Services to the ATCS.

When you are enrolled in a program, you will learn different skills that you will use to take care of the patients. You will learn proper transporting of residents, catheter care, subacute care, postmortem care, housekeeping skills, infection control, therapeutic communication skills, assisting in ambulation and exercise, and the different basic care concepts. during your training you will be spending your time in lectures and clinical practice. While in the clinical area, you will be under the supervision of a registered nurse.

One of the advantages of training to become a nursing aide is that you are allowed to enroll in an HHA training program at the same time. Normally, an HHA program takes 120 hours to complete but since you are already enrolled in a 150-hour CNA program, you can enroll in a 40-hour HHA program. The 40 hours are divided equally for classroom lesson and supervised practical training.

Once you complete the HHA program you will get certified by the ATCS. To get a CNA certification however, you must challenge the certification exam. This exam consists of a written/oral test and a skills evaluation exam. You will only get certified if you pass all the tests.

Every applicant will be allowed to take the examination up to three times. They must take these tries within duration of 24 months from the completion of their training. If they fail for the third time, they will be required to retrain before they will be allowed to take again. Those who pass are added to the registry for nurse aides and allowed to work for 24 months before they need to renew their certification.

Both HHA and CNA certifications are only valid for 2 years. You need renew your certification(s) to keep your eligibility to work as a nursing aide and/or a home health aide. To be eligible for renewal you must provide proof of at least 8 hours of employment. You will also be required to show that you have met the required number of in-service training hours.  For more information, please follow this link: http://www.cdph.ca.gov/certlic/occupations/Documents/How-to-Renew-Your-Cert.pdf.

Passing the license exams is necessary to become a nursing assistant in Florida. You will not be allowed to work in any healthcare facility as one if you do not have a CNA certification. In order to take the exams, you must meet several requirements. The most important among the requirements are the completion of a state-approved training course and the passing of the background checks.

college-course-enrollment-deskThere are two parts in the license exams, which are the written/oral exam and the demonstration of skills needed be CNAs. For the written exams, you will be given 90 minutes to finish all 60 questions. Out of the questions, there are 10 pretest questions. These questions will not be scored since they are placed there for statistical purposes. There are three domains that will be focused during the exams. These include knowledge on the roles of a nurse aide, promotion of safety, and promotion of function and health of residents.

As for the skills demonstration, you will be asked to perform only a few of the nursing skills. These skills will be randomly selected by a computer out of a list of 22 nursing procedures. During the skills demonstration, you will be given a simple scenario where you will enact and perform the different skills. You will also be assessed on skills that will not be asked for you to perform. An example of this is hand washing; every nurse aide is expected to perform this as a means of infection control before handling the patients.
