The process of becoming a nursing aide is quicker and easier compared to other courses that you can take in order to enter the health industry. According to the OBRA of 1987, to work as a nursing aide, you must be certified in order to work as a nursing aide. Although their certification process for each state is a bit difference, the general process is the same.

students-outside-schoolTo get certified in Oregon, you must be able to pass the nursing assistant 1 license exams. The exams are handled by the Headmaster Testing Company and consist of a written/oral examination and a return skills demonstration. If you are able to pass all the tests, you will get your certificate in the mail within 10 business days from your exam date.

A nursing assistant 1 license will make you eligible to work as a nursing aide in a nursing facility or a long-term care center for up to two years. If you feel that you want to further your career, you can chose to become a nursing assistant 2. The Board of Nursing has approved three different CNA 2 categories. You can train for acute care, dementia care, and restorative care. Each category will have its own required additional training that you must complete and a corresponding exam.

Another route that you can follow to further your career is to become a medication aide. To be eligible to train at a state-certified CMA training course, you must have a minimum of 6 months working experience as a nursing aide. This work may either be full-time or part-time that will still total of 6 months.

The renewal of both a CMA and a nursing assistant license will require the holder to work for at least 400 hours, which is equivalent to 3 months work, as a paid nursing assistant while under the supervision of a registered nurse. In addition to these hours, CMA license holders must also attend 8 hours of continuing education. Keep in mind that the work as a CMA can be considered as a work of a nursing assistant; but not vice-versa.

To be able to work in the state of Texas as a nursing assistant you must enroll in a certification class and be able to pass the license exams. Aside from a license, you should also be able to pass the federal and the state background checks.

instructor-making-presentation-to-classroomWhen you take your class you will have your instruction split between classroom work & lectures and skills practice in a medical setting. School programs are required to be licensed by the Department of Aging and Disability Services and provide a minimum amount of hourly instruction. currently you must go through at least 51 hours of theoretical coursework and 24 hours of clinical practice.

During you skills training you will perform activities such as: catheter care, measuring vital signs, range of motion exercises, transporting patients, dressing, housekeeping, bathing, feeding, practicing the Heimlich maneuver & CPR, emergency care, postmortem care, observing, reporting and psychosocial needs.

After your course your school can setup a date and location for you to take the competency exam. You can also call the Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Services at 1-800-444-5178 to help you find a testing facility. When you take the exam you’ll notice it contains two different parts, a written and a manual demonstration test. Passing both parts of the exam is necessary before you can receive your certification and be placed on the nurse aide registry. Each applicant is allowed to take both parts up to three times before needing to retake a training course.

Once you pass you will receive your CNA certification within 4-6 weeks and become listed on the registry in good standing. Your active status on the registry must be renewed every 2 years by showing work verification. To check your status on the registry you can call 1-800-452-3934 and enter your social security number when prompted.

Dallas, NC Certified Nurse Aide Classes

Those who want to become certified to work as a nurse aide must enroll in classes. You can find the available state approved courses in Dallas, North Carolina listed on this page. (Multiple classes are being offered)

The first step in becoming a nursing assistant is to look for an eligibility route that you can follow to get your name on the Nurse Aide I Registry. Only those whose named are on the Registry are allowed to work in a nursing home as a nursing assistant since they were able to comply with the OBRA testing and training regulations.

class-demonstration-of-medical-procedureThe most common route that many aspiring nursing assistants take is Eligibility Route 1, which consists of completing a 75-hour CNA training course and then challenging the license exams afterwards. You can find that these training courses are being offered by nursing homes, home care agencies, hospitals, private and community training centers, and high schools. Since there is no minimum age requirement to become a nursing assistant; high school students may enroll themselves in an approved training course that is being offered at a high school.

Even though nursing students, nursing graduates, and certified nursing assistants may take the license exams without the need for retraining, they are however, encouraged to do so to help them prepare for both the written/oral (English or Spanish) exam and the clinical skills evaluation. Retraining is however, required for all those who were able to fail the license exams after 3 attempts. In addition to that, all candidates must also be able to pass the exams no longer than 2 years from their application to take the exams.

If you pass all the tests, your name will be automatically added to the Registry within 2 to 4 days after taking the tests. Once it is there, you will also receive in the mail your nursing assitant license which is valid for 24 months. If you want to continue your eligibility to work as a nursing assistant in North Carolina, you must renew your license before it expires.

To be eligible for renewal, you must have worked for at least 8 hours as a paid nursing assistant, while being supervised by a registered nurse. The tasks that were delegated to you by the nurse should be the tasks that are allowed for a nursing aide to do. Please be reminded that an expired license can no longer be renewed and you must retest and retrain if you wish to continue being a nursing assistant.
