Nursing aides are one of the most popular ways to start a career in the field of health. Compared to other career choices, you can become a CNA in a matter of weeks. With the demand for this profession constantly on the rise, you can immediately get a job once you are qualified to work in a certified nursing facility.
There are a few requirements that must be met for you to be able to become a nursing assistant. One of the requirements is that you must pass the background check of both the federal and the state. Another requirement is that you should be able to complete a state approved CNA training program.
The classes that teach nurse aide fundamentals are required to provide 75 hours total of clinical practice and classroom instruction. Generally classes are supervised by a registered nurse and are split into hands-on clinical experience and state and federal theoretical instruction. During your clinical instruction you will be taught at least 16 hours of 25 different nursing related skills.
You can only work in Tennessee as a nursing assistant if your name is listed in the Nurse Aide Registry. A nursing aide is only considered certified if his or her name is listed in the Registry. To get into the NAR, you must pass the certification examination. This exam consists of a written (oral) knowledge test and a skills evaluation. Both of these exams are taken on the same day.
You will have 90 minutes to answer all 75 multiple-choice questions in the knowledge test and 30 minutes to perform all 5 nursing skills. To get into the NAR, you will have to get a 75% average in the knowledge test and an overall competency of 80% in the skills evaluation.
A failed test means a failed certification exam. You will have another 2 attempts to pass the exams. You must reapply for the exam as well as pay its corresponding fees. Since your training is only valid for 2 years. You must use these 2 attempts within 2 years after you completed your training. If you still fail after the third attempt, you will be required to retrain before you can once again apply for the exams.
Those who are successful are notified and have their name added to the nurse aide registry. Once your name is entered on the Registry, you will receive your certificate within 4-6 weeks after passing. To keep your name there, you must renew your certification every 2 years. One of the requirements for renewal is to provide proof that you have worked in a certified nursing facility for at least 8 hours. Private work, working in a physician’s office, babysitting, and companion services is not considered by the state as qualified work.
