You must become certified in order to work as a nursing assistant in Tennessee. To meet the requirements you will first need to enroll in a state recommended training program and take the competency exams. Federal and state laws require a person who wants to work as a nursing aide to be certified and listed in the Nurse Aide Registry. The NAR is a list of all nursing aides who were able to meet all the training and testing requirements. Only those who are listed on the Registry are allowed to work in long term care settings.

If you wish to get into the NAR, you must undergo proper training first. You will need to look for a suitable training program to enroll in. Before enrolling, please verify that the program you chose is certified by the state. Certified programs are required to offer at least 75 hours of training and be coordinated by a registered nurse who has been deemed qualified as a CNA instructor. The program consists of theories and practical training.

During your classroom and clinical CNA class instruction you will learn infection control, safety procedures, CPR, Heimlich maneuver, emergency preparedness, resident independence, patient rights, communication and interpersonal skills.

Before you proceed to your practical training, you must first complete at least 16 hours in:
•    Communication and interpersonal skills
•    Residents’ independence
•    Safety and emergency procedures
•    Infection control
•    Residents’ rights

By completing an approved program, you will be eligible to apply for the competency exam. Your training will only remain valid for 2 years. If you fail to take or pass the exams before then, you will have to complete another program. To apply, you can download a copy of the application forms at www.hdmaster.com or call (877) 201-0758 and send it to D&S DT, PO Box 418, Findlay, Ohio 45840. Please include the payment of the fees and a copy of your training registration roster, training certificate, or challenge approval from the State.

After finishing your training you can apply for the license exams. The exams will test you on 5 of the 25 nursing related skills you learned during your training course. You must pass all 5 skills successfully to be listed on the state nurse aide registry. The competency exam consists of a written/oral exam and a manual skills test. In order to get certified, you must pass all the tests within 3 attempts. If you fail, you will have to reapply and retake the test you failed. If you fail after the 3rd attempt, you must complete another training program before you can reapply again.

Once your name is on the Registry, your certification will be valid for 24 months. If you wish to remain on the Registry, you will have to renew your certification by working for at least 8 hours. Private works and working in a physician’s office do not count as qualified work. If you fail to renew your certification, it will expire and you will need to start all over.
