Because of such high demands, newly certified nursing aides will have no problems looking for work not only in the state, but in other states as well. If you are looking for a way to start a career in health, start considering on becoming a nursing aide.
To work as a nursing aide in South Carolina, you must be listed on the SC Nurse Aide Registry. You can gain entry into the registry by either challenging the competency exam or by applying for reciprocity.
TESTING
The competency exam or the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Exam (NNAAP Exam) will test your competency in knowledge and skills as a nursing aide candidate. If you pass the knowledge test and the skills evaluation, you will get into the NAR and will receive your CNA card.
Each candidate is only given three attempts to pass all the tests. These attempts must also be done within 2 years of completing one’s training. If you fail to meet these conditions, you will be required to undergo CNA training before you will be allowed to apply for the exam again.
The exams are only available to those who meet the eligibility routes that were mentioned in the NA Candidate Handbook (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/074100.pdf). These eligibility routes include:
• Completing a South Carolina state-approved nursing aide program
• Completing an out-of-state training program that meets the standards established by both the federal and SC.
• Enrolling in or completing a nursing education program
• Being trained as a medic or a military corpsman
RECIPROCITY
The process of reciprocity is only available to certified nursing aides who were able to maintain a valid certification and a clean record. Reciprocity allows these nursing aides to transfer their certification from the Nurse Aide Registry they come from to the SCNAR, while still being on both Registries. Nursing aides who have records of abuse, neglect, or are listed on the Nurse Aide Abuse Registry will not be allowed to enter the Registry.
When they apply, they must fill out the reciprocity application forms (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/074102.pdf) and send it to:
