According to the federal and state regulations, if you want to work in Tennessee as a nursing aide, you must be listed in the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. This is a list of the certified health care workers who were able to meet all training and testing requirements. Employers will only hire nursing aides who are listed in the NAR.
To get into the NAR, you will have to challenge the certification exam. This exam consists of a written/oral knowledge test and a skills evaluation. It is currently conducted by the Headmaster Testing Service. The knowledge test will cover several different concept areas such as infection control, roles and responsibilities, aging process, mental illness, and many more. Before you can apply, you will have to complete a state-approved training program. When enrolled, you will spend at least 75 hours for lectures and clinical practice while under the supervision of a qualified clinical instructor. A clinical instructor is a registered nurse with at least 2 years of nursing experience. He or she was able to complete a Train the Trainer course and has some background in either teaching adults or supervising nursing aide students.
Training will teach you many different health care proficiencies such as resident independence, infection control, CPR, safety procedures, patient rights, emergency preparedness, Heimlich maneuver, interpersonal experience, and communication skills. Once you have gone through a school course you can submit an application to schedule a time to take the certification exams.
The exams are both a written test and a manual hands-on skills component. With the written test you will need to score better than 70% to pass. During the manual skills test you will be required to successfully demonstrate five of the skills you learned during your class instruction. To get into the NAR, you must pass both parts of the exams within 3 attempts. If you fail in one part, you will have to reapply and retake the part you failed. If you fail after your third attempt, you will be required to retrain before you can reapply.
Once you have met all of the requirements set by the state of Tennessee you will be added to the nurse aide registry and listed their for 24 months. In order to continue being listed you will need to show proof of having worked an 8 hour shift every 2 years.
A CNA from another state can immediately enter into the state’s NAR by applying for reciprocity. To be eligible, the applicant must have a valid certificate and a clean record. Nursing aides who are listed in the Abuse Registry will not be allowed to work in a certified nursing facility. Applicants coming from Florida and North Carolina must undergo a Tennessee-approved program and take the exams to get into the NAR. Applicants from Georgia are allowed to directly apply for the exams without any additional training. These courses are offered by different training institutions and are certified by the DHHS before they are allowed to handle any students. When you enroll, you will be spending at least 100 hours in classrooms for lectures and at the clinical area for practical duties. You will be taught the concepts that were required by OBRA such as infection control, patients’ rights and independence, mental health, communication skills, and many more. Depending on which program you choose to enroll in, it may take 6-12 weeks to complete a program.
