[Level 2 Nurse Aid Program]

As part of the Home Nursing Care Act, all nursing assistants must be registered to be able to work in a long-term nursing facility. The first step in the certification process is to enroll in a state-approved training program that is approved by the OSBN.

college-students-in-medical-studiesThe training programs that are offered in Oregon are required to offer at least 75 hours of classroom lectures and another 75 hours doing on-the-job training. They are required to offer the curriculum that was created by the Board. The curriculum will cover the basic duties of a nursing assistant 1. These will include training in assisting in the patient’s activities of daily living, assisting in bed making, caring for the patient’s direct environment, doing infection control, learning the proper communication skills, and even emergency procedures such as CPR.

As soon as you complete your training, you can then apply for the license exam, which consists of a written/oral exam and a skills evaluation. The license exam in the state of Oregon is offered by the Headmaster Testing Company. To get your license, you will have to pass all the tests. If you do, you will receive in the mail your license. If you feel that you are not yet ready to take, you are given 2 years to do so.

If you want to further your career, you can take advance training programs. You can opt to become a nursing assistant 2 or a certified medication aide. Since these are advance certifications, you must have an active CNA 1 license and a good record to be accepted for training. Keep in mind that these training will also have their corresponding competency exams.

CNA licenses are valid for only 24 consecutive months. To renew, you must perform 400 hours of qualified work while under the supervision of a registered nurse. Work as a CMA can be considered as nursing assistant work, but not vice-versa. Since the NAR now has an online system, renewal can now be done through the internet.

Currently nursing assistants in Oregon make $27,000 a year on average depending on their level or expertise, length of employment and area where they work. Large cities such as Portland often have a high pay due to the increased cost of living.

This city is located in the northwestern part of the state of Oregon. According to the latest census, the city of Portland’s population is now at 583,776 people. They are considered the 29th most populous city in the entire country. Portland also ranks top as the most populous city in the state of Oregon. Its neighboring county is Washington County as well as Multnomah County. It has a total area of 145.4 sq miles and a population density of 4,288.38/sq miles.

If you want to work as a nursing assistant in the state of Oregon, you must get your name entered into the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. The general way to get into the registry is by completing the state license exam, which is only available to those who have established eligibility to take the exams.

college-students-discuss-trainingFor those with no proper background training in healthcare, their option is to complete an OSBN-approved training program. To complete this program, they must meet the 150 hour training requirement, which is divided equally into lectures and clinical duties. There is also a final exam, which the students must pass. The exam will consist of a knowledge test and a skills test, which is very similar to the license exam. Nursing assistant students who completed a 75-hour training course from a different state may also apply.

RNs, LPNs, and unlicensed nursing graduates can also work as nursing assistants if they want to change in their career. Before they work as a nursing assistant, they are required to get certified by passing the nursing assistant 1 license exam. Since their training is similar, they are allowed to directly apply for the exam. RNs and LPNs who are working as nursing assistants are not allowed to do procedures that are not under the duties of a nursing assistant.

The state of Oregon is very open to CNAs that come from other states. These individuals may transfer and work in Oregon, if they wish, by applying through reciprocity. When they apply, they must provide a copy of their license and show proof that they had worked for at least 400 hours as a nursing assistant within the last 2 years.

All nursing assistants and CMA employers are required to check the validity of their prospective employees. For those that are certified within the state, the employers may check by going online (http://osbn.oregon.gov/OSBNVerification/) and either do license number checks or a name search. For those who are applying through reciprocity, then they will have to call the state where the applicant came from or visit their official website.

Enterprise is the county seat of Wallow County. According to the census of 2010, their population has now reached up to 1,895, which was only around 1,940 back in 2007. They have a total area of 1.5 sq miles for all of it is city land. Their population density is 1,289.7/sq miles.  This city was incorporated by the Oregon Legislative Assembly back in 89. A notable business in the city is the Terminal Gravity Brewery and Public House which provides beer state wide.

Examples of health care centers in the city include Wallowa Valley Center for Wellness (541) 426-4524, Pioneer Guest Home (541) 426-4222, Wallowa County Mental Health Clinic – After Hours (541) 426-3111, and Wallowa Memorial Hospital & Home Health Service, which is found on 601 Medical Pkwy, (541) 426-5427. photo attribution: ufv

To work as a nursing aide in Oregon, you must get your name on the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. There are two general ways to do this. One is by applying for endorsement or reciprocity, which is only available nursing aides who are registered in a different state, and by passing the state competency evaluation exam.

nurses-outside-relay-eventTo qualify for endorsement, you must provide proof that you completed a training program that meets the standards of OBRA; hold a current CNA certification in another state (s); have worked for at least 400 hours as a CNA for the past 2 years, while under the supervision of a registered nurse; and you must provide proof that you were paid to provide nursing services.

If you want to apply for this, you will need to download a copy of the endorsement form from http://www.oregon.gov/OSBN/pdfs/form/cnaendorse.pdf. Aside from the documents mentioned above, you will also need to send a non-refundable fee of $60 for the endorsement process and $52 for the fingerprint processing. Before you submit the documents, please make sure that your certification has not yet expired.

If you are not yet a certified nursing assistant, you will have to get certified by challenging the competency exam. To be eligible to take the exams, you must first complete a state-certified nursing assistant 1 training program. It can take you 10 to 13 weeks to complete your training, depending on which program you enroll in. If you are a nursing student or a graduate, you can apply directly to take the exams. When you apply, you’ll just need to submit in addition a copy of your diploma and/or transcript of records.

The state of Oregon has certified Headmaster to conduct the examination and assist with the scoring. The competency exam will consist of a written/oral exam and a clinical skills test. You must pass all the tests to get your certificate.

CNA certificate in this state is only valid for 24 consecutive months. If you want to continue to be eligible for work as a nursing aide, you will have to work for 400 hours as a nursing aide before your certification expires. The expiration date will always fall on midnight of your date of birth. If you have an advance certification like CMA, the work you did as a CMA will already count as qualified work for a nursing aide. A nursing assistant is an individual who works under the supervision of a registered nurse providing nursing and nursing-related tasks. This profession is currently in demand by health care centers throughout the country. It is because of this that more and more people are choosing to enter the medical field by becoming nursing assistants.

class-lecture-and-discussionAccording to federal law, aspiring nursing assistants must be able to complete the proper training and pass the state competency evaluation exam. OSBN-approved programs are required to offer 75 hours of classroom instructions and another 75 hours for on-the-job training. You will find that the programs are offered by nursing homes, hospitals, and other training centers. To be accepted into one, you must provide a high school diploma, a negative TB test result, and be physically capable of handling different patients/residents.

After completing training, the next step is to challenge the competency exam, which consists of a knowledge test and a skills test. The knowledge test can also be taken in an oral version by paying and additional fee of $35. If you take the normal set, you will only need to pay $106 for the testing fee. Since repeaters are allowed to retake only the portion which they failed, their testing fee will vary. Retakes for both portions will only cost a total of $70. The skills exams cost $45, while the knowledge test only costs $25.

If you want to take some time to further prepare for the exam, you are given two years from the day you completed your training to get your license. If you fail on your initial attempt, you do not need to worry since you still have two more chances. After failing your third attempt, you will no longer be allowed to take the test unless you complete another state-approved training program.

[Level 1 and Level 2 Nurse Aid Programs Available]

To ensure that patients receive only top quality care from nursing aides, nursing aides are now required to undergo proper training before they are to handle the patients. Practicing as a nursing aide before being certified is against the Oregon law. Breaking this law may result in a civil penalty that may reach up to $5,000.

nurse-simulation-testingTo be certified, you will have to get into the Nurse Aide Registry. One way to gain entry into the Registry is by passing the nursing assistant competency evaluation program examination, which is only available to those who received the proper training. You can get the training you need by completing a level-1 nursing assistant training program. Before you enroll, you must make certain that the program is approved by the Oregon State Board of Nursing.

The level-1 CNA examination consists of two parts. The first part is a 77-multiple-choice written exam. This exam may either be taken online at WebEtest or by the traditional paper and pencil. The written exam also has an oral version, which is offered to those who have problems with written English. The second exam is the clinical skills tests. To get your certification, you will have to pass the two portions.

The other method of gaining entry into the NAR is by applying for reciprocity. This process is only for certified nursing aides who possess an unencumbered certificate and have worked for at least 400 hours within the last 2 years. The hour requirement is waived if the applicant has only been certified for less than 2 years.

Your CNA certificate is only valid for 24 years. It is important that you renew your license before it expires. An expired license can no longer be renewed. It can however, be reactivated by passing the competency exam. Notices are normally sent out by the Registry at least 1 month from its expiration date. Keep in mind that even if you do not receive the notice, it is still not an excuse for you not to renew your certificate. Renewal can either be done online or by sending the necessary documents to the state’s BON.

The license exam consists of a written and a skills evaluation of some of the nursing skills that were taught in the training program. If you have some difficulty with written English, you can request to have an oral exam instead. If you feel that you are not ready, you can postpone your exam date for up to 2 years from the completion of your training. If you fail on your initial attempt, you are given another two chances to pass. Failing for the third time means that you will no longer be allowed to retake the test unless you undergo retraining.

To get your CNA 1 license, you must pass all the portion of the license exam. If you pass all the tests, you will get your license in the mail within 10 working days from your exam date. If you failed, you will receive in the mail instead your scores and areas where you need improvement.

Your nursing aide 1 license will be valid for only 24 consecutive months. The expiration of your license will fall on midnight of your birthday. A notice, along with the renewal forms, will be sent to you at least 1 month from the expiration date. With the new system, you can also renew your license online. A lapsed license is considered expired and can only be reactivated by taking the competency exam. To know if this process if appropriate for your license, please call the OSBN at (971) 673-0685.

There are a number of people who now want to get a CNA certificate because of the job opportunities in health care waiting for nursing assistants. What most people do not know is that the process of acquiring a nursing assistant certificate is only the starting step of the career opportunities.

students-in-health-care-instruction-courseAlthough the requirements to become a nursing assistant may differ from one state to another, everywhere you go, you will be required to possess a nursing assistant license if you want to work in a long-term care facility or other healthcare centers. To get a license, you must be able to get the proper training from a state-approved nurse aide program and become eligible to challenge the competency evaluation exam. The examination will test you in both skill and knowledge. If you pass all the portions of the exam, your name will be entered into the NAR and you will get your license.

If you want to further your education and training, you can choose to become a CNA 2 by completing the necessary training and passing the corresponding evaluation exam. In the state of Oregon, CNA 2 is classified into three: acute care, restorative care, and dementia care. It is possible for you to be classified under all three if you complete all the requirements.

The core curriculum for nursing assistant 2 training programs will consist of at least 30 hours of classroom and laboratory work that will already incorporate the different training concepts of safety, prevention of complications, proper communication with the patient, proper documentation, and patient care. The topics that were tackled during the nursing assistant 1 training will be further explained and discussed during the advance programs. Each of the specific classifications will handle topics that will be more focused on their specified patients.

A nursing assistant 2 license will also last about 2 years. A nursing assistant is not allowed to work with an expired license, which is why you must renew your license before it expires. An expired license may no longer be renewed. If your license has lapsed, you must retake the competency evaluation exams again. To renew your license, you must perform 400 working hours as a paid nursing assistant and maintain a good record. If you have any questions, you can call the Oregon State Board of Nursing at (971) 673-0685.

According to the federal law, all nursing assistants must be registered and certified to be able to work in a long-term care facility. To be certified, they must pass the competency evaluation exam conducted by a contracted testing company after the nursing assistant candidate completes a state-approved training program.

students-after-health-care-classTo ensure that the training of nursing assistants is equal, the federal government had mandated several topics that must be included in every training program. These topics include basic care, infection control, safety and emergency procedures, mental health and rehabilitation, human anatomy, communication techniques, and patients’ rights. They must also include a minimum of 75 hours of training. In the state of Oregon, training programs must offer their students 75 hours of classroom instructions and 75 hours of clinical practice. They are also required to focus more on the proper care of geriatric patients.

Once you complete your training, you will become eligible to apply for the evaluation exam, which is conducted by the Headmaster Testing Company. Military corpsmen and medics with at least 400 hours of paid working experience may apply for the exams without the need to undergo any additional training. Nursing graduates may also apply, provided that they show their diploma and transcript of records when they apply.

To gain entry into the Registry, you must pass both the written and the clinical skills tests. For those with some difficulty with written English, can take the oral exam if they pay an additional fee. If you need any special considerations for your exam, you must send the request during your application.  Each candidate is given three attempts to pass the exams. If you fail after the third attempt, you will be required to retrain before you can take the test again.

Another way of getting into the Oregon NAR is through applying for reciprocity. Certified nursing assistants who want to apply must submit a copy of their certification of completion of training and their passing the evaluation exam. They must also have worked for at least 400 hours as a paid nursing assistant while under the supervision of a registered nurse.

A nursing aide can be defined as a paid individual who does simple and routine nursing care to the patients, while under the supervision of a registered nurse. The tasks that a nursing aide does depend on the procedures that fall within his scope of duties and what the nurse delegates.  This profession is one of the increasing careers in the field of health. That is why newly certified CNAs will have no problems looking for a job.

medical-students-in-class-poseIf you want to start this career, you will have to receive the proper training and education from a level-1 nursing aide training program. The results of the tests are usually released within 10 business days from your exam date. If you pass all the tests, you will be allowed to work as a nursing assistant. Your CNA certificate will be sent to you through the mail.

All nursing assistants who wish to work in a nursing facility in Oregon must complete a nursing assistant 1 training program. To ensure that the quality of training that the aspiring nursing aides receive is good and meet the federal and state’s standards, all training programs in Oregon are required to be certified by the OSBN before they take on any student.

class-of-medical-studentsFor a program to be certified, it must complete the proper forms that were provided by the Board, pay the necessary fees, and provide other important requirements such as a copy of the curriculum, teaching methods, evaluation methods, and a sample of their final exam. These programs must also offer the student a minimum of 150 hours of training, which are divided equally into lectures and duties in an actual clinical area. If a training program loses its certification while still handling students, those students are allowed to complete their training.

The completion of a level 1 CNA training program that is approved by the state will make the student eligible to apply for the state competency evaluation exam. A nursing graduate, regardless of which country he/she graduated, can apply directly and take the exam, provided that he/she is able to provide a copy of his/her diploma and transcript of record. For those that graduated in a different country, they must provide proof of legal entry.

Only the names of individuals that are on the Nurse Aide Registry are allowed to work as a nursing assistant 1in a nursing facility. Aside from passing the state competency exam, another option of getting into the Registry is by applying for reciprocity. A certified nursing assistant who wants to apply through this must have worked for a minimum of 400 hours within the last 2 years. This time requirement is negated if the applicant has had his certificate for less than 2 years. For more information, you can follow this link: http://www.oregon.gov/osbn/Pages/cnacertification.aspx.

[Level 2 Nurse Aid Program]

The first step in becoming a nursing aide involves establishing eligibility to apply for the nursing aide competency evaluation program exam. There are several ways to do this, but the most common way is to enroll in an OSBN-approved training course. These courses are offered by several training institutions such as nursing homes and hospitals. If you completed your training in a different state, you can still apply for the competency exam in Oregon.

students-enrolled-in-health-care-trainingThe first part of the exam is the knowledge test, which consists of 77 multiple-choice questions that will cover a wide array of topics such as safety, communications, data collection, mental health, client rights, roles and responsibilities of a nursing aide. This test is also given in an oral version. The second part is the clinical skills evaluation. In this part, the nursing aide candidate will be required to perform 5 nursing skills in front of an evaluator.

To gain entry into the Oregon Nurse Aide Registry, the candidate must pass both parts of the tests. If you pass the Headmaster Testing Company will send a notice to the Board of Nursing so your name can be added to the registry.  Your license will be mailed to you and arrived at your address within 10 working days from your exam date. If you fail, you will still have 2 more attempts to pass. When retesting, you will only need to take the test that you failed in.

Your certificate is only valid for two years. During that time, you must work as a paid nursing aide for a total of 400 hours if you want to renew your license. You must also keep a clean record. Having records such as patient abuse, negligence, or misappropriation of their property, can prevent you from further working as a nursing aide.

The NAR can now be accessed online by going to http://osbn.oregon.gov/OSBNVerification/. When you visit the site, you can check your record or another nursing aide’s record by either doing a license number search or a name search. You can also try speaking with a representative of the OSBN by calling (971) 673-0685 to learn more about training and testing requirements.

The city of Tillamook is the county seat of Tillamook County. You can find this city on the southeastern portion of the Tillamook Bay on the Pacific Ocean. The process of becoming a nurse aide is relatively easy if you know what to do. The only thing that is truly needed to work as a nurse aide in Oregon is a CNA certification. If you do not have any previous background in healthcare, you will need to enroll in a state-approved level-1 nurse aide training class.

group-of-studentsWhen you enroll, you must make sure that the class is approved by the Board of Nursing so that you will not have any problems when you apply for the license exam afterwards. To standardize the training offered by so many training facilities, the Board has required them to get certified before handling any students. These training classes are required to use only the curriculum that was developed by the Board. They are to offer their students a total of 150 training hours, which are divided equally into lectures/laboratory and on-the-job training. It can take you 10 to 13 weeks to complete your training.

These programs are also required to employ only those who qualify as nursing instructors to handle their students. To qualify as a nursing instructor, you must be a registered nurse with a valid license and have at least 2 years of nursing experience. One of those years must have spent working in a long-term care facility. In addition, you must also have some background experience in teaching or training adults, or supervising nurse aides. If you do not, then you should complete a course about adult education.
Once you complete your training, the next step for you is to challenge the competency exam. You must pass all the tests to get your license.  If you fail, you will be given another 2 attempts to pass. Failing for the third time means that you can no longer retake the exam, unless you complete another training class.

If you want to climb further up the ladder, there are certain advance training courses which you can enroll once you have a CNA 1 license. You can either training to become a CNA2, which already has three different classes, or you can become a certified medication aide. If you do want to pursue an advance certification, you will have to undergo another training program and another competency exam. For more information, you can follow this link: http://www.oregon.gov/osbn/Pages/cnacertification.aspx#Obtaining_CNA_2_Certification.

The opportunities for nursing assistants in the field of health are continuously on the rise. This rise is thought by many experts to continue to increase up to 2016. If you want to enter the field of healthcare, this is the perfect time for you to do so.

cna-practicing-patient-examTo work as a nursing assistant in Oregon, you must first get certified. You can get a level-1 nursing assistant certificate by passing the competency evaluation program exam. This however, is only available for those who are eligible to take the exam. Eligibility can be established by completing an OBSN-approved training program, graduate from a nursing school, or train in a certified program in another state.

Nursing assistants are also known as nursing aides or nurse aides. These individuals work under the supervision of a licensed nurse. They help the nurse in providing nursing care to the patients. The tasks that a nursing assistant can do however are only limited. Their tasks mainly focus on basic care, assisting in the patient’s activities of daily living, taking vital signs, promotion of safety, and assisting in certain emergency procedures.

If you want to further your knowledge and skills, you can train to become a CMA or a certified medication aide. These are CNAs who are trained to give the patients non-injectable medications such as oral medication, inhalers, patches, ointments, eye medications, and other forms of medicines.

To be a certified medication aide, you must enroll in an approved CMA training course. You can find a complete list of courses at: https://osbn.oregon.gov/OSBNOnlineReports/default.aspx?ReportName=OregonApprovedTrainingPrograms. Before you are given your license, you will have to pass anther competency exam.

Registered nurses and licensed practical nurses may work as a CMA if they apply for the CMA Registry. RNs and LPNs are allowed to directly apply without the need for additional training and testing. For more information, please call the Nurse Aide Registry at (971) 673-0685.

[Level 2 Nurse Aid Program]

The first part of the process of becoming a nursing assistant is to enroll and complete a 150-hour training course. These hours will be divided equally into lectures/laboratory works and clinical duties. It can take you 4-6 months to complete your training. Before you graduate, you must also pass the final exam.

nurse-aides-in-training-exerciseAfter your training, the next step is to apply for the license exam. You can either do this by sending your downloaded application packet to the Board of Nursing or coordinate a schedule with your nursing instructor. Aside from paying the initial testing fee of $106, you will also need to send $52 for the fingerprinting process. If you want to take an oral exam instead of the written exam, you will need to pay an additional $32.

The first part of the exam is the written exam, which is also offered in an oral version. In this portion of the exam, you will be given a total of 90 minutes to answer 77 multiple-choice questions.  The second portion is the clinical skills tests. You will be asked to perform 5 nursing procedures in front of a nursing assistant evaluator.  The first of the procedures will always be proper hand washing. The other four are randomly selected from a set list. You can find a complete list and other information about the exams in the Oregon Nursing Assistant Candidate Handbook (http://www.hdmaster.com/testing/cnatesting/oregon/orformpages/ORCandidateHandbook.pdf).

If you pass all both portions of the exam, you will gain entry into the Nurse Aide Registry and you will receive your nursing assistant certificate. No individual is allowed to work as a nursing assistant prior to being certified. Breaking this law can result in a civil penalty of $5,000.

Your CNA certificate is only valid for 24 consecutive months. A notice is sent out by the Registry at least 1 month prior to the expiration. The expiration of nursing assistant certifications in this state has always fallen on the owner’s date of birth.  To renew it, all you have to do is to meet the 400 working hours requirement, pay the renewal fee, and submit the renewal application forms.

The process of becoming a nursing aide is quicker and easier compared to other courses that you can take in order to enter the health industry. According to the OBRA of 1987, to work as a nursing aide, you must be certified in order to work as a nursing aide. Although their certification process for each state is a bit difference, the general process is the same.

students-outside-schoolTo get certified in Oregon, you must be able to pass the nursing assistant 1 license exams. The exams are handled by the Headmaster Testing Company and consist of a written/oral examination and a return skills demonstration. If you are able to pass all the tests, you will get your certificate in the mail within 10 business days from your exam date.

A nursing assistant 1 license will make you eligible to work as a nursing aide in a nursing facility or a long-term care center for up to two years. If you feel that you want to further your career, you can chose to become a nursing assistant 2. The Board of Nursing has approved three different CNA 2 categories. You can train for acute care, dementia care, and restorative care. Each category will have its own required additional training that you must complete and a corresponding exam.

Another route that you can follow to further your career is to become a medication aide. To be eligible to train at a state-certified CMA training course, you must have a minimum of 6 months working experience as a nursing aide. This work may either be full-time or part-time that will still total of 6 months.

The renewal of both a CMA and a nursing assistant license will require the holder to work for at least 400 hours, which is equivalent to 3 months work, as a paid nursing assistant while under the supervision of a registered nurse. In addition to these hours, CMA license holders must also attend 8 hours of continuing education. Keep in mind that the work as a CMA can be considered as a work of a nursing assistant; but not vice-versa.

To work as a nurse aide, you must be registered on a Nurse Aide Registry and possess a CNA license. There are different ways to gain entry into the registry. For those with no prior background in the field of health, it is important that they enroll and complete their training in a state-approved nurse aide training 1 program. They can find that these programs are offered by different training institutions like nursing homes, hospitals, community technical colleges, private training facilities, and some of the lectures even offer online.

students-in-workshopTo complete a training program, one must be able to meet the required 150 hours of training and pass the final exam, which consists of a knowledge test and a clinical skills exam. The training hours are divided into lectures and on-the-job training. During that time, they will be supervised by their qualified instructor.

To be a nursing assistant instructor, one must be a registered nurse who has at least 2 years of experience providing nursing care. One of those years must be spent working in a long-term healthcare facility. In addition to this, an aspiring instructor must have had completed a course about teaching adults or at least have some experience in the matter.

By completing an approved training program, the candidates will be able to apply for the license exams. Normally, the exam will consist of a written test and a return demonstration of selected nursing skills. For those with some problems with English, they may have an oral exam by simply requesting for it and paying an additional fee of $35.

If you have a qualified disability and would like to have some additional accommodations for your exam, you can request for one by filling out the ADA Accommodations Form, which can be downloaded from the OSBN official website. The request form should be submitted with the other requirements when you apply.

Each applicant is given three attempts to pass all the tests. You are only given up to two years, from the day you completed your training, to get your license. When you retake the exam, you will only need to pay and take the area where you failed. If you fail after the third try, you will not be allowed to retake unless you complete again another training program.

In the state of Oregon, it is against the state’s law to work as a nursing assistant without a level-1 nursing assistant certificate. If you break this law, you may get a civil penalty which can reach up to $5,000.

nursing-assistant-simulation-testIt is very important that when you handle the patients, you should know what you are supposed to do. Newberg, Oregon CNA Programs

A nursing assistant or a nursing aide is an individual who helps a licensed nurse in taking care of the patients/clients by assisting in offering nursing care. Since nursing aides work under the supervision of the nurses, they will only perform the tasks that the nurses delegate.

nurse-aides-practicing-on-simulator-dummyAs compared to nurses, the scope of duties or tasks that a nursing aide can do is fairly limited. The nursing procedures that they do are often simple and routine. They can assist in giving basic care such as bed baths, assisting in activities of daily living, take and monitor the vital signs and other measurements, promote safety and independence, and sometimes assist in emergency procedures when necessary.

If a nursing aide wishes to increase his duties, he can become a nursing assistant 2 in the state of Oregon. This will involve completing a CNA 2 training course and take the competency evaluation exam afterwards. Since there are three different types of level-2 nursing aides (acute care, restorative care, and dementia care nursing aides), the nursing aide will have to determine which training curriculum he wants to enroll in. It is however, possible to be certified in all three kinds of classes.

The duties and tasks that a nursing assistant 2 can do include, but are not limited to:
•    Tasks involving interpersonal skills and communications
•    Observing and collecting pain responses
•    Tasks involving the relief of the patient’s/client’s pain
•    Provide comfort measures when needed
•    Make plans of activities that involve the patient’s pain
•    Applying of compression devices
•    Bladder scanning
•    Urine dip stick testing
•    Discontinuing catheters
•    Obtaining samples

Nursing aides still work under the eye of a licensed nurse. They are also not allowed to give any medications. If you want to give them, then you must be trained and get certified as a CMA or a certified medication assistant. Like the basic and other advance certifications, you will need to complete an appropriate program and pass its competency exam.

If you wish to find out more about becoming a nursing aide or get its advance certifications, you can call the Oregon State Board of Nursing at (971) 673-0685 or email them at Oregon.bn.info@state.or.us.

[Level 2 Nurse Aid Program]

Becoming a nursing aide has now become one of the best means to start a career. The job opportunities in this line of work are continuously on the rise because of the increase of people who are more concerned about their health and need assistance with it. Experts believe that this increase will continue up to 2016.

nurse-aide-instructing-elderly-woman-about-workoutOne of the benefits of choosing to be a nursing aide is its practicality. To start working as a one, you will only need to get certified. The process of certification may slightly vary for each state, but it will also start with you receiving proper training and ends with you challenging the competency evaluation exam. In Oregon, you can gain eligibility to apply for the exam by:
•    Completing an OBSN-approved nursing assistant 1 training program within the last 2 years.
•    Completing a certified training program from another state that still offers the minimum of 75 hours of training.
•     Training as a medic or a military corpsman and have worked for at least 400 hours providing related care within the last 2 years.
•    Completing or graduating from a nursing educational school within the last 3 years.

The competency examination consists of a 77-item knowledge exam, which also has an oral version, and a skills exam. In the skills exam, you will be asked to perform 5 nursing tasks that were taught in the training program. Out of the 5, the first one will always be proper hand washing. To get your certificate, you must pass all the exams within three attempts or within 2 years from the completion of your training.

The state of Oregon is very open to CNAs from other states. They can gain entry into the Oregon NAR through applying for reciprocity. The process of reciprocity in this state does not involve them taking another competency exam. They will only need to show proof of their training and experience, and pass the national background check. To be eligible, they must have worked for at least 400 hours as a paid nursing assistant.  These hours may be done working full-time or part-time. You can download a copy of the endorsement application packet through this link: http://www.oregon.gov/OSBN/pdfs/form/cnaendorse.pdf.

If you are thinking of becoming a nursing assistant in Oregon, then you should start by finding a CNA 1 training program that is approved by the state’s Board of Nursing. Because of the high demand for this profession, you will have no problems looking for a training program to enroll in.

nurse-aide-practicing-procedures-on-dummyWhen you enroll, you will be spending a total of 75 hours for classroom lectures about the different nursing concepts and another 75 hours doing practical training in an actual clinical setting. Before you are allowed to handle the patients, you must cover 24 hours of lectures about basic care, therapeutic communication techniques, infection control, safety and emergency procedures, and assisting with ADLs. To graduate from the program, you will have to pass the final exam, which will test you in both skills and knowledge.

The completion of a training program will make you eligible to apply for the competency evaluation exam. The Headmaster Testing Service is the company that administers the testing in this state. Passing this exam is a very important step since it is one of the ways to get a CNA license and into the NAR. The exam will consist of a knowledge test, which is also offered in its oral version, and a clinical skills test. IF you want to get the oral exam or need any special considerations when taking the exam, you must inform the Registry during the submission of your application.

They will be asked to provide proof of their education and training such as a copy of their diploma, transcript of records, or certification of completion of training.

According to the OBRA of 1987, all nursing assistants must be registered and certified to be able to work in a nursing home or a long-term care center. A nursing assistant is an individual who works under the supervision of a registered nurse and takes care of the patients by providing nursing and nursing-related care to the patients.

classroom-discussion-lectureThe certification process for a nursing assistant in Oregon starts by enrolling in a nursing assistant 1 training program that is approved by the Board of Nursing. These programs are required to use the curriculum that the Board was created (http://www.oregon.gov/OSBN/pdfs/policies/nacurr_1.pdf). To complete a program, you must meet the 75 hours of classroom lectures, 75 hours of clinical duties, and pass the final exams.

Once you complete the training, the next step for you is to apply for the state competency evaluation exam. This exam is designed to test you in both skills and knowledge. In order to get your name entered on the Nurse Aide Registry and your license, you must pass all the tests. You must pass all the tests within two years from the completion of your training. If you fail, you will be given another 2 attempts to pass.

If you pass all the tests, you will receive your license within 10 days from your exam date. Your license and status on the Registry will remain valid for up to 24 months. To maintain your status and be eligible for renewal, you must work as a paid nursing assistant under the supervision of a registered nurse for a total of 400 hours.

Getting a nursing assistant 1 license is only a stepping stone for this career path. If you want to further your knowledge and training, you can enroll in a state-certified nursing assistant 2 training program. Since there are three classes of CNA 2 (acute care, restorative care, dementia care), you will also  have to choose which category you want to train in. You can also train in all three curriculums if you want. To become a nursing assistant 2, you will also have to pass the corresponding competency exams. If you want to know what the content for each curriculum is, you can visit this site: http://www.oregon.gov/OSBN/Pages/CNA_InformationPage.aspx.

The first step to become a nursing assistant is to search for a state-approved level-1 nursing assistant training course. It is important that before you handle any of the patients, you should know how to properly take care of them. In Oregon, It is the Board of Nursing that is in charge of approving/disapproving and implementing training courses.

instruction-of-nurse-aide-programMany people have the problem of choosing which program to enroll in. Please be assured that the content of training for each course has been reviewed by the Board to ensure that the quality of education and training they offer meet federal and state standards. In addition to the topics that have been required by the federal government such as infection control, patient rights, communication skills, mental health, basic care, human anatomy, and emergency and safety procedures; the state has also placed emphasis on the proper care of geriatric patients.

The completion of a level-1 nursing assistant course will help you prepare to take on the competency evaluation exam. If you pass both the knowledge/oral test and skills test, your name will be added to the Nurse Aide Registry and you will receive your license in the mail. According to the law, only those who have been certified are allowed to work in a long-term care facility as nursing assistants.

Getting a nursing assistant 1 license will also open new career opportunities for you. By enrolling in a certified medication assistant training course, you can increase your knowledge and skills. A CMA is a CNA who has been trained to give to the patients, while under the supervision of a nurse, non-injectable medications. These medications may include:
•    Oral, buccal, or sublingual medications
•    Eye medications, except for newly operated eye patients
•    Ear medications
•    Nasal medication
•    Rectal or vaginal medications
•    Skin ointments and patches
•    Inhalers

To be eligible for CMA training, you must have possessed an unencumbered CNA certification, pass the federal and state criminal background check, and show proof that you were able to work for at least 6 months as a nursing assistant. Like the process of getting a nursing assistant 1 certificate, you must also pass a competency exam before you can be registered as a CMA.  For more information, please visit this link: http://www.oregon.gov/osbn/Pages/cnacertification.aspx#Obtaining_CMA_Certification.

If you want to start working in healthcare, you should think about becoming a CNA.  A CNA or a nurse aide/nursing assistant is an individual who assists licensed nursing personnel in taking care of the patients by helping in the provision of nursing care.

school-enrollmentA scope of duties and procedures that a nursing assistant can do is limited. A level-1 nursing assistant may only do tasks such as assisting in the resident’s  activities of daily living, taking vital signs, doing a range of motions, and certain emergency protocols. The tasks that they will be doing will be based on what the nurse delegate.

If you want to further your career, you can train to become a nursing assistant 2. The nursing assistant 2 programs consist of 30 hours of training. You will be taught and trained in skills that were not taught in the basic course. Once you become a nursing assistant 2, you will also acquire new duties. For example, a nursing assistant 2 is allowed to assist and do pain relieving by performing complementary therapies, apply compression devices, assist in warm and cold therapies, do fingerstick capillary blood testing, do oral pharynx suctioning,  perform occult blood testing, take samples, and many more.

If you want the task of giving non-injectable medications to patients, you can train to become a CMA or certified medication assistant. The certification process for this will still include additional training and competency evaluation exam. RNs and LPNs who want to work as medication assistants will no longer need to retrain and take an exam. If they work as CMAs they will only be allowed to perform procedures and tasks that are within the scope of the duties of a CMA.

Registered nurses can also grab the opportunity of the increase in demand for CNAs. With more and more students enrolling in training programs, the training facilities will also need more nursing assistant instructors. To be a nursing assistant instructor, you must be a registered nurse with at least 2 years of experience. One of those years must be spent in a long-term care facility. You must also complete a course about teaching adults, or at least have some experience teaching adults or supervising nursing assistants.

The state examinations are conducted by the Headmaster Testing Services.  The test includes a written or oral part as well as a practical demonstration of a number of nursing aide skills.  The applicant should successfully pass both of these exams in order to be entered into the Oregon Nurse Aide Registry.  To apply for the state exam, one should pass a completed application form, request for a schedule to take the exam, and pay the corresponding fees.  He should also provide documents such as certificate of completion of CNA training, social security card, fingerprint cards, or diploma and transcript.

Reciprocity is offered by the state for those who have current and active certification in another state.  They need to submit a copy of their certification in both their completion of training and their passing of the state exams.  They also need to show proof of 400 hours of paid work as a nurse aide under the supervision of a registered nurse.  A criminal background check is also need in both state and federal levels.  The applicant should not be convicted of neglect or abuse of a patient in the state where he holds current certification.

The certification needs to be renewed for every 2 years.  The expiry date for each certification is on the midnight of the applicant’s date of birth.  It will be renewed in an odd or even year depending on the year in which he was born.  The renewal forms are sent from 1-2 months before the expiration date.  The applicant should show proof of employment as a nursing aide for at least 400 hours for the past 2 years.  If the license lapses, it will be deemed expired and one would need to apply for a reinstatement from the registry.

The successful passing of the competency examination is one of the ways to gain entry into the Nurse Aide Registry and get a CNA 1 license. The competency exam, as created by the federal government, is composed of a knowledge-base and skill-based test. Each state has contracted with an independent testing company, which will aide in the giving, scoring, recording, and releasing of the test results. In the state of Oregon, that testing company is the Headmaster Testing Company.

young-female-college-student-smilingAlthough the application forms are sent to the Oregon State Board of Nursing, you can contact Headmaster at (800) 393-8664 if you have any questions and requests about:
