Your first step in becoming a nurse aide is choosing a nurse aide program that you will enroll in. The program has to be state-approved so that you can make sure that you will be allowed to take the license exams after you complete your training. These programs are being offered by colleges, high schools, and certain healthcare institutions. They offer the students 75 hours of classes and 100 hours of hands-on training.

college-woman-writing-on-clipboardAs a nursing student, you will be taught in different necessary skills that you will use to take care of the patients like vital signs taking, bed bath, catheter care, offering and removing a bedpan, assist in ambulation, dressing, performing ROM exercises and other basic care skills. While still a student, you will already have the opportunity to experience firsthand what a real clinical area is like. You will be placed under the supervision of a registered nurse working there or a trained member of the healthcare team. This type of experience will give you a strong foundation for your career. For more information, you can call the Florida’s Nurse Aide Registry at (850) 245-4567.

After the completion of your training, you can then apply for the state’s license exams. This step is a necessary one since Florida does not allow its CNAs to work without one. If you pass all the tests, you will get your certification/license 14 days after taking the exams.

In becoming a nursing assistant, your most important task is to pass the state’s competency exams which are being conducted by Prometric.  But before you can take the exams, you must meet the different prerequisites. The most important requirements to become eligible are the completion of a CNA training program and passing the background checks. The background checks for criminal records will be done in both federal and state levels. Having records such as theft, negligence, malpractice, or patient abuse may be grounds for the rejection of your application. The last offenses are applicable to healthcare workers who wish to work in the state as nurse aides.

students-in-school-lectureYour fist challenge in the license exams is the written examination. In this exam, you will have 90 minutes to answer all the questions, including the pretest questions. There will be 60 questions where 10 of them will not be scored since they are pace there for statistical purposes. You can also have an oral exam as you prefer as your first challenge. This can be done if you send a letter of request during your application.

The second part is the skills evaluation. The different skills that were taught to you during your training in the program will be tested however, out of all the skills only 5 of them will be asked to be performed. These 5 will be randomly selected by a computer from a list of 22 different nursing procedures. They will be shown to you, along with each of the skills checkpoints, before the start of the exams. These checkpoints will serve as a basis for determining if you did them successfully or not. The Florida Nursing Assistant Registry can answer additional questions you may have regarding certification qualifications and requirements, and you can call them at (850) 245-4125.

The state does not allow its nursing assistants to work in any healthcare center if they do not have a CNA license. This means that taking on the license exams after receiving the proper training from a state-approved program is a necessary step in becoming a nursing assistant. Aside from the completion of the training program, another important requirement is passing the background checks. Having records such as theft or violence may be used as grounds to reject your application. Other requirements for the license exams include passing the necessary documents like the completed application forms, transcript or records, fingerprint cards, ID photo, and the payment for the different fees.

If you pass, you will receive a notice along with your certification 14 days after you have taken the exams. If your documents were not complete when you applied, this may cause a delay in the release of your results.  Keep in mind that failing in any part of the test will not make you eligible for any refunds.
