If you want to become a nursing assistant in the state of Texas, you must be able to meet the different requirements. One of the requirements is to enroll in and complete a CNA school program that is approved by the state. The course you select must also provide an adequate amount of instructional hours. This amount is currently at a minimum of 24 hours of hands-on clinical training, and 51 hours of class lectures, coursework and class instruction.
While involved in the clinical portion of your course you will receive experience using common nurse aide equipment, and performing tasks used on the job. This training is coordinated by a registered nurse and will help prepare you for the competency exam. Some of the skills you will practice are: measuring and recording patient vital signs, catheter care, range of motion exercises, housekeeping, infection control, transporting residents, bathing, nourishment, dressing, toileting, safety practices, and assisting to ambulate.
After your school class is complete and when you are ready your school can help you schedule a time to take the certification exam. You must pass the exam within a 24 month period from the time you took your class. You can also contact the Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Services to help you find a location to take the exam by calling 1-800-444-5178.
The exam is the final requirement necessary to become a certified nurse aide. It is given in two parts. These are a manual skills and a written exam. You must successfully complete both portions within three tries to pass. For the manual skills part you must demonstrate five different skills in an environment similar to that found in a health care facility. The skills selected are chosen at random and you are asked to perform the tasks as you would in a nursing home setting. During the written exam you will need to answer 70 multiple choice items.
After completing the exams you will be listed on the registry. Those who are listed are expected to renew their license every 24 months. This can be accomplished by submitting verification of hours worked as a nurse aide from your employer. In addition the registry must be notified of current address and phone numbers at all times to remain in good standing. To check the status of your license you can contact the state’s automated phone system for the registry by calling 1-800-452-3934.
If you are an experienced CNA from another U.S state, or a medic that was trained in the military and have served with a number of hours of duty you may qualify for reciprocity. This simply means you may be able to avoid retaking a training course and be able to take the competency exams to receive your nurse aide license in Texas.
