To be able to work as a nursing assistant you must enroll in a school course, take on the CNA license exams and get your certification. You are also required to pass the background check to be able to meet state requirements for nurse aides. The state of Texas does not require you to provide a diploma to be able to enroll in a program.
The job of a CNA is to primarily provide basic care to patients and residents of health care facilities under the general guidance of a registered nurse. During your class instruction you will learn the fundamental skills used on the job. Some of the tasks you will be taught are: patients rights, psychosocial needs, communication, safety practices, transporting residents, observation practices, nourishment/feeding, recording vital signs, range of motion exercises, toileting, catheter care, and housekeeping.
Those who complete the training requirement will need to take and pass the certification exam before they are eligible to work. The exam is a demonstration exam and a written test. For the demonstration you must perform 5 nurse aide tasks at random in a nursing setting. During the written portion you will need to answer 70 multiple choice problems. You must pass both parts in three attempts to complete the exam successfully. Those who pass become certified nursing assistants for 2 years and are eligible to work during that time.
You can find a testing location near you by calling the Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Services at 1-800-444-5178 or at their local phone number (512) 467-0615 for more information. If you have already completed the exam and want to check your registry status you can do so by contacting the registry automated phone line at 1-800-452-3934.
