The competency exam consists of two parts. The first part is the knowledge test. This is a 75-item multiple-choice written exam. You will have 90 minutes to answer all of the questions. The second portion of the exams is the skills tests. In this portion, each candidate will be examined individually. You will be given a simple scenario where you will have to perform 5 nursing skills. The first of the skills will be hand washing while the rest will be randomly taken from a list. To pass, you must perform all the skills with 80% competency in order to pass. You will only be given 30 minutes to perform all 5 skills. If you finish ahead of time, you can use the remaining time to correct any steps you missed.

Some of the twenty-five skills you will learn during your training school instruction includes resident independence, communication skills, infection control procedures, CPR training, the Heimlich maneuver, patient rights, emergency preparedness, safety procedures, and interpersonal job skills. You must enroll and pass the state competency examination within twenty-four months after finishing your training.

Your name will only be entered into the NAR if you pass all of the tests. Your name on the Registry will remain valid for 24 months. If you wish to continue your eligibility, you will have to renew your certification before it expires. If you fail to renew and wish to work again as a nursing assistant, you will have to start from the beginning by retraining and retesting. In order to remain listed there you will need to work an eight hour shift each two year period.

The process of becoming a nursing aide starts by enrolling in a state-approved training program. When you enroll, you will spend at least 75 hours in training with a minimum of 16 hours for your clinical practice. During the entire time, you will be under the care of a qualified clinical instructor who has a minimum of 2 years of working experience and has completed a Train the Trainer Course.

The program you join is required to teach at the minimum 75 hours and 25 different nursing related skills. Of the 25 skills learned you will be tested on 5 at random during your competency exam. Once Headmaster receives your application, you will receive a notice that will authorize you to take the exams as well as give you information regarding your exam and exam date. During your exam, you must bring a government-issued ID and your Social Security Card. If you fail to bring this, you will not be allowed to take the exams. If you want to reschedule or cancel, you must notify Headmaster at least 24 hours before your exam date to get a free reschedule.

To get into the NAR, you must pass both parts of the exam –the knowledge and skills test. Each candidate will only be given 3 attempts to pass. If you still fail after the third attempt, you will no longer be allowed to retake the exam unless you undergo retraining. If you do pass, you will be certified and be allowed to work as a CNA in a certified nursing facility for 24 months. You are required to work at least 8 hours every 24 months to renew your certification and keep your name on the Registry.

A nursing aide is an individual who works under the care of a licensed nurse and helps the nurse provide nursing and nursing-like care to patients. With the development of the Nursing Home Reform Act, all nursing aides must now undergo proper training before being certified and allowed to work in a certified nursing facility.

Before you enroll in one, you must make sure that the program you are enrolling in is certified. An approved program takes at least 75 hours to complete. Their training curriculum is divided into theories and clinical practice while being supervised by a clinical instructor. During your classes your curriculum will include 25 different nursing skills which will be needed on the job and you will be tested on before you can receive your certification.

A clinical instructor is a registered nurse with a minimum of 2 years of nursing experience. One of those years was spent working in a long-term care facility. The RN has also completed a Train the Trainer program and has background experience in training adults or supervising nursing aide students. A licensed practical nurse can also be a clinical instructor only if a registered nurse is placed as the supervising instructor.

Completing an approved program will make you eligible to apply for the certification examination. A military-trained medic or corpsman can also apply for the exams. RNs and LPNs who wish to work as a nursing aide are required to take the certification exam in order to get into the NAR. When they are working as nursing aides, they can only perform procedures that a nursing aide with a basic certification can do.

If you have previously trained to become a certified nursing assistant in most states other than Tennessee you may be able to apply for reciprocity. The requirements for CNAs that come from Georgia, North Carolina and Florida are a bit different from the other states. Those that come from Georgia are only required to take Tennessee’s nursing assistant license exams. As for those that come from the other two states, they must undergo retraining as well as take the state exams.

Payment fees must be in the form of a money order, company check, order voucher, or cashier’s check. Personal checks will not be accepted. The exams include both a written component and a physical skills test. With the written part you must receive a score of 70% or above to pass. With your manual skills competency test you will need to demonstrate five of the skills you were taught during call instruction. To get into the Nurse Aide Registry, you must pass both the written/oral exam and the skills evaluation. You will only have 3 attempts to pass this. If you fail after the third attempt, you will no longer be allowed to reapply unless you undergo retraining. When retaking the exam, you will only need to take the test you failed.

Those who pass both exams and meet all other requirements are placed on the nurse aide registry. You must become certified in order to work as a nursing assistant in Tennessee. To meet the requirements you will first need to enroll in a state recommended training program and take the competency exams. Federal and state laws require a person who wants to work as a nursing aide to be certified and listed in the Nurse Aide Registry. The NAR is a list of all nursing aides who were able to meet all the training and testing requirements. Only those who are listed on the Registry are allowed to work in long term care settings.

Before enrolling, please verify that the program you chose is certified by the state. Certified programs are required to offer at least 75 hours of training and be coordinated by a registered nurse who has been deemed qualified as a CNA instructor. The program consists of theories and practical training.

During your classroom and clinical CNA class instruction you will learn infection control, safety procedures, CPR, Heimlich maneuver, emergency preparedness, resident independence, patient rights, communication and interpersonal skills.

Before you proceed to your practical training, you must first complete at least 16 hours in:

•   Residents’ independence

By completing an approved program, you will be eligible to apply for the competency exam. Your training will only remain valid for 2 years. After finishing your training you can apply for the license exams. The exams will test you on 5 of the 25 nursing related skills you learned during your training course. You must pass all 5 skills successfully to be listed on the state nurse aide registry. The competency exam consists of a written/oral exam and a manual skills test. In order to get certified, you must pass all the tests within 3 attempts. If you fail, you will have to reapply and retake the test you failed. If you fail after the 3rd attempt, you must complete another training program before you can reapply again.

Once your name is on the Registry, your certification will be valid for 24 months. If you wish to remain on the Registry, you will have to renew your certification by working for at least 8 hours. Private works and working in a physician’s office do not count as qualified work. If you fail to renew your certification, it will expire and you will need to start all over.

One is required to undergo training in a CNA course in order to become a nursing assistant. This is one of the primary requirements for being able to apply for the state license exams. Training must be at least 75 hours in length and cover curriculum including the 25 nursing skills you will need on the job. The course will be administered by a registered nurse with a minimum of two years experience.

You can only get a certification if you are in the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. Employers are required to check their applicants’ certification before hiring them. If you have never been certified as a nursing aide before, the only way for you to get into the NAR is by passing all the tests in the competency evaluation exam. This exam consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a clinical skills evaluation. You must pass all the tests to become a certified nursing aide. Only those who completed the necessary training can apply for the exams. You can become eligible to apply by:

The competency exam will test whether you have a solid knowledge of nursing fundamentals. You will be evaluated on 5 of the 25 competency skills and must pass before you are placed on the nurse aide registry. Your training will only be valid for 2 years. This means that you will have to pass all the exams before your 2 years is up. You will only be given 3 attempts to pass all the tests. If you fail to become certified within 3 attempts of within 2 years after completing your training, you will have to complete another Tennessee-approved training course before you can retake the test.

Once your name is on the Registry, it will be your responsibility to keep your record current. You must inform the Registry if you changed your name or address. The Registry must be informed through writing. For name changes, you will need to provide proof of a legal name change such as marriage certificate, divorce certificate, or other court orders.

Your name on the Registry will only remain for 2 years. Licenses will expire every two years and must be renewed before then. Renewal is accomplished by working one 8 hour shift for each 24 month time span. During that time, you must find work in as a paid nursing aide in a certified nursing facility. Proof of employment is a requirement for renewal. You can use a pay stub, a notarized letter from your employer, or a printout of payroll as proof. If you fail to renew your certification, it will expire. No CNA is allowed to work in a certified nursing facility with an expired certificate.
