CNA Certification in New York

A CNA certification in New York is an important requirement for those who would like to work as nurse aides in long-term care facilities and home care in New York.  The state requires applicants to undergo state-approved certified nursing assistant training as well as pass a federal and state criminal background check and take the state examination.  After passing these qualifications, one shall be entered into the state’s nurse aide registry.

One should take their school training in a facility which has been approved by the New York State Department of Health.  The applicant should undergo at least 75 hours of training which shall include both classroom and practical training.  Subjects that are covered n the training include basic care for patients, resident rights and independence, ethics at work, communication skills, and emergency procedures such as CPR.  One should also submit to a criminal background check first before he can be admitted to do the training.  One can apply for the state examinations within 2 years of completion of the training.

man-sitting-34Nursing graduates can also apply for the CNA exam.  They need to apply for an eligibility to take the test first of the state’s Department of Health first and submit an application form as well as a copy of their diploma.  Those who have been trained in foreign countries as a nurse can also apply for certification by submitting their diploma, a copy of their nursing license, transcript, social security card, as well as the corresponding fees for the examinations.  They are not required to undergo a state-approved  training to apply for the nurse aide exams.

The CNA test is conducted by Prometric.  It consists of both a clinical and a written exam.  Candidates will be required to pass at least 5 basic nursing skills and an additional two skills.  The results of the exam will be released within 5 days and once an applicant has passed, he will be sent a certificate and a wallet card.  One can try the exam for three times and if he fails all of them, he shall be required to undergo training again. One should submit passport size photos, fingerprint cards and the corresponding fees before taking the exam.

The state accepts reciprocity for nurse aides, and to qualify they need to submit is a completed application form, a copy of their certification from another state, as well as the necessary fees.  The applicant should also submit a proof of employment for the past 24 months if the license does not expire on that state.  He must also have worked for at least 7 hours for pay within the last 2 years. The license is renewed every 2 years and the nurse assistants should have performed at least 7 hours of paid work in their occupation with a state-approved nursing facility or employer.  It is also the policy of the state that it is the employer who should renew a nurse aide’s license and not the employee themselves.  If the license expires or lapses, the applicant should undergo training again and then retake the examinations. You can contact the NY Nursing Assistant Registry to get further details about qualifications, licenses and to search the status of a worker.

New York State Nurse Aide Registry

The New York State Nurse Aide Registry is a part of the state’s compliance with State and Federal Regulations requiring each state to have their own registry.  As of today, there is also a recent regulation which needs that each nursing facility should be able to ascertain the current certification status of their applicant CNAs first before hiring them.  This means that employers would need to check or verify the certification of applicants first on the web before proceeding to the hiring process.  The good news is that employers can access the registry any time of the day, any day of the week.

The registry is not just useful to a particular set of people such as nursing facilities.  They are also important for nurse aides and the public in general as it will give them the ability to choose the types of health workers that they will hire depending on their capacity to perform on the job.  There is also an interactive voice response which users can make use of if they prefer a faster and more efficient way of having their inquiries answered by the registry.  The voice system is available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. This means that you can get a verification of the CNAs certification status either through a written format or through the phone.

man-sitting-on-bench-994It is a well-known Federal regulation that every certified nursing assistant should be entered into a registry in order to determine their appropriateness for hiring by potential employers.  This is a very strict requirement that everyone has to comply with if they wish to be employed as nursing assistants in the state.  The state enforces a series of requirements which will have to be successfully accomplished by an applicant before he or she can be allowed to work on the state in the capacity of a caregiver or employee of a long-term care facility.

This involves getting an accredited training center for the training as well as successfully passing the training program itself.  This means that one has to do their best in order to get the approval of their instructors in how they perform both in the classroom and clinical sessions of their training.  After this, they will have to comply with the physical test and criminal background check that would be needed to ascertain whether they are viable for the position or not or whether they will be disqualified due to a previous conviction in crimes involving drugs, violence, and theft. You can find additional information about the NY nursing assistant requirements by clicking here.

Once you pass the certification exam, you will be allowed to work as a CNA in the state of New York.  Provided that you are able to maintain the standards that are required in nursing facilities, you can enjoy a good employment until the time comes for you to renew your license.  You will then have to submit a renewal form stating that you have accomplished the required number of paid hours in the capacity of a nursing assistant and that you have successfully completed any other requirements such as in-service and continuous education.  You can contact the registry through their website if you have any further questions which are not answered in it.

More and more people are looking for ways on how to enter the medical field. The best way to do that in today’s economy is to become a nursing aide. Nursing aides help care of residents or patients who are ill, injured,  disabled, or infirm in nursing homes or other healthcare settings. Nursing assistants work mainly under the supervision of a registered nurse and the medical team. They take care of the patients by performing the basic nursing skills and their knowledge of the Fundamentals of Nursing.

medical-center-traineesAccording to the law, for a nursing aide to work in a licensed health facility that is supported by Medicaid or Medicare, they must have a certificate. There are different ways of getting a certificate in the State of New York. These mainly involve in either being able to pass the competency evaluation exams or being directly entered into the NYSNAR.

For those individuals who do not have any background knowledge and skills in nursing, they are required to enroll and complete a 75-hour training program that is approved by the Department of Health. Their training hours will be divided into lectures, laboratory skills work, and on-the-job training. They will be taught in concepts such as patient rights, promotion of safety and independence, infection control, mental health, and assisting in different daily activities.

If an individual is employed in a NY nursing home or for an approved health care agency prior to starting the training, the individual may not be charged for any costs of the training. This includes payments for textbooks and other materials. All the fees will be paid by the state of New York.

Once they complete their training, the next step is to apply for the exams. Nursing graduates as well as foreign registered nurses are also allowed to take the exams once they have been deemed eligible to take the exams by the NYSDOH’s NAR Program. The nursing graduates and foreign nurses are no longer required to undergo any additional training in order to apply.

The competency examinations will test both the skills and knowledge of the nursing aide candidate. In order to get his name on the Registry, the candidate must be able to pass all the tests. The results of the exams are released within a few days from the date of the exams. If the candidate passes, his CNA license and wallet card will be sent in the mail.

In order to work as a nurse aide in a nursing home or a long-term care facility in the State of New York, you will need to gain entry into the Nurse Aide Registry or NAR. You may either gain it by becoming eligible to take the Competency Exams and pass it, or you can directly gain entry into NAR.

health-care-instruction-studentsThere are several different ways for you to establish eligibility. One way is being able to complete a CNA training course that is approved by the NYDOH. This program takes 75 hours to complete and consists of lectures and practical skills training.

Another option of becoming eligible is if you were able to complete the Fundamentals of Nursing such as nursing graduates. Before nursing graduates are allowed to apply for the exams, they will need to prove that they are eligibility to the DOH. They will be required to submit along with the application forms important documents like their nursing school diploma. For those whose schools did not offer nurse aide training, their school will be required to contact the New York State Education Department.

Foreign nurses are also allowed to take the exams if they are able to establish their eligibility. Like nursing graduates, foreign registered nurses will need to provide proof of education and training. Aside from their nursing license, they will also be asked to provide a copy of their SS card, a copy of their diploma, transcript, and their nursing school coursework.

A nurse aide that is currently registered in another state may gain direct entry into the NAR by applying through reciprocity. When they apply, they must have a valid and active license status. They will need to submit their copy of their current out-of-state nurse aide certification and pay the appropriate fees. If the name of their CNA license is not the same as the one they currently have, they will need to provide their marriage license.

The first thing that you need to do if you want to become a nursing aide in the state of New York is to enroll in a CNA training program that is approved by the Department of Health. Before you are able to do so, the DOH requires that all nursing aide candidates must undergo a criminal history record check which is backed up with fingerprint submission.

class-student-participation-taskThe criminal history record check or CHRC consists of a 10-point rolled fingerprint, which is submitted to the Division of Criminal Justice Services or DCJS. Once the DCJS is through with the background check, the prints will then be forwarded to the FBI, which will then be compared against the national database.

The background checks are free of charge. It will be the work of the nursing home or the training facility to take the fingerprints and submit them to the state’s DOH. The NYDOH will then forward it to the DCJS for the checking.

If there are certain criminal results that are found in the applicant’s records, he must be given the chance to explain the information that is found in the CHRC results. If he wishes so, he may withdraw his application without any prejudice from the nursing home or the home care agency. If the individual decides to cancel his application, the nursing home or home care agency will destroy any information obtained from the background check.

Those nursing aides who are applying for reciprocity are also required to undergo this check before they are allowed to permanently work in the state. In order to be eligible to work as a nursing aide, the applicant must not have any Class A felonies define in the Penal Law or any Class B or C felonies occurred within 10 years from the date of the background check.

An active or valid CNA license is a requirement to be able to work as a nursing aide in a nursing home or other healthcare facilities. The nursing aide licenses in the state of New York are only valid for up to two years. Its expiration date is on the last date of the month that it was released to you.

course-instruction-for-studentsA notice is sent to your mailing address on the Registry 45 days before the expiration date of your license. That is why it is important to notify the Registry if you ever change your address. Keep in mind that the notice only serves as a reminder to renew your license and is not needed in the recertification process.

To become eligible for renewal, you must have worked for pay 7 hours as a nursing aide. In this state, the employers are the ones who are required to do process and pay the fees for recertification. If you are currently not employed, your license will be recertified for 24 months starting from the last day that you worked as a nursing aide in New York.  If you are eligible for recertification, your last employer will be the one who will process the application form and pay for its fees.

It is important that the license is renewed before it expires. An expired license may only be renewed if you retest, or retrain and retest, depending on your certification route. If you have a lapsed license but still has a good standing, you may continue to work only in the healthcare centers that you are currently working in. This of course, is provided that the healthcare center immediately submits or already has submitted the requirements for certification to Prometric.

In the application form to gain entry into the NYSNAR and become a CNA, there are several routes that are available to the nursing assistant candidate. These routes will determine if whether the candidate will need to take the license exams or be directly entered on the Registry.

class-exercise-for-cnaRoutes 1, 3, 5, 6, and seven are required to take the competency exams before they are allowed to work as a nursing assistant in a nursing home. These individuals include those who had no prior experiences in health care, nursing graduates, foreign nurses, and CNAs who had their licenses expired. A license expires if the holder is unable to work as a paid nursing assistant for at least one day within the last 24 months thus was unable to renew it.

The competency exams consists of a written exam and a clinical skills tests. The written exam consists of 60 questions that are all multiple-choice. The written exam may also be taken orally. This is advantageous for those who are not that good in written English such as those that have English as a second language. To get an oral exam, the request must be made during the initial application and not on the day of the examination.

In the clinical skills portion, the nursing assistant candidate will be asked to perform 5 randomly selected nursing skills in front of an evaluator. The evaluator will use checkpoints for each skill in order to determine the performance of the candidate. To pass this part, all the selected skills must be performed satisfactorily. The candidate will be shown the list of checkpoints prior to the start of this part of the exam.

All candidates are allowed to take the exam 3 times. If they failed for the 3rd time, they will be required to undergo retraining before they are allowed to retake the exams. When they retake, they will also need to submit the application forms again but indicating that they are retesting. If a candidate only fails in one part, he may only apply to take the exam which he failed.

Back in 1987, the federal government required that all nursing aide candidates must undergo the proper training and competency testing if they wish to work in a nursing facility that is funded by Medicare and Medicaid.  They are required to do this whether they plan to work full-time, part-time, or other working agreements that have been made.

student-group-hugTo undergo the proper training, the candidate will need to enroll in a training program that is approved by the state’s Department of Health. Upon enrollment, the candidate will be asked to provide the results of his criminal background check. Aside from the training and testing requirements, it is also important that the candidates have good records with the state.

To ensure that the candidates are well competent in both skills and knowledge, the NYSDOH has contracted Prometric, which is a testing company, to develop and administer the competency evaluation exams. There are two portions in the exam; one is a clinical skills test while the other may either be an oral or written exam.

If the candidate is able to pass both portions, he will receive his certification and wallet card along with the results in the mail within 5 days from the date exams. The certification is valid for two years and must be renewed before it expires because an expired or lapsed license can no longer be renewed. According to the policy of the state, it will be the employer who will renew the certificate and not the nursing assistant himself.

There are different routes to determine the eligibility of an individual to become a nursing assistant. These routes will indicate whether the individual must take the competency evaluation exams or may directly be accepted into the New York State Nursing Home Nurse Aide Registry.

student-training-exerciseIf the candidate chooses the first route, he will need to complete a state-certified CNA training program and pass the evaluation exams afterwards. The program must be approved by the NYDOH, to be eligible to apply for the exams. These programs take 75 hours to complete and consist of lectures and practical skills training. The candidate must apply and take the exams within 2 years from the date he completed his training.

The second route is for those who are already a registered nursing assistant but is currently registered in a different state. When applying for reciprocity, the applicant will no longer be required to undergo any retraining and retesting, provided that he meets the requirements. Applicants for reciprocity will need to provide the completed application form (https://www.prometric.com/en-us/clients/Nurseaide/Documents/New%20York/NYNARegistryApp20111006.pdf) and a copy of their CNA license and the necessary fees. Reciprocity fees cost a total of $50.

The third route is available for those who are nursing graduates that were trained in the U.S. Since their training is similar to nursing assistants, they will no longer be required to undergo any additional training. Since they were not able to obtain a professional license in the medical field they will still need to take the license exams. The necessary application materials will need to be sent to the New York State Department of Health at the Empire State Plaza, Albany, New York.

RNs and LPNs may also become a nursing assistant if they want to, which is what the fourth route is all about. For RNs and LPNs there will no longer be any required additional training or testing. Applicants through this route are directly entered in the NAR once they are found eligible. Like those applying through reciprocity, they will need to show proof of their training and experience to the Department of Health.

Completing a state-certified training program is one of methods to establish eligibility to take the CNA license exams. These programs take 75 hours to complete and must be approved by the New York State Department of Health before they are allowed to handle any students.

nurse-aide-teamworkIf an individual is employed by a New York state-approved nursing facility prior to enrolling in the program, the individual may not be charged for any expenses incurred during training. These expenses may include, but are not limited to, costs for textbooks and other materials that will be used during the course of the training and for the payment of the exam fees. A nursing aide who was able to find work in an approved nursing aide employer within 12 months from the date that he passed the exam, the nursing aide will still be eligible for reimbursement for both the training and the testing fees.

To avoid any problems, it is advised that all the official receipts should be kept by the individual. It will be the nursing home who will take the receipts, make copies, and send them to the NYSDOH.  The state will then make the payments directly to the nursing facility, which will be used to reimburse the nursing aide.

For those who are employed in a nursing facility that is also allowed to do in-facility testing, the application forms of the candidates are sent to the person in charge of filing them to Prometric. When submitting the forms, the payment for the examination fees must also be included. The payments for the fees that are to be included should only be of the candidates who are taking the exams on the specific date. Please remember that Prometric does not accept any advance payments or applications that do not include the payment fees.

It is not enough to have a CNA license and your name on the Nurse Aide Registry to work as a nursing aide; the license must also be active or valid. Initial CNA licenses are valid for only up to two years. All expiration dates fall on the last day of the month that each card was issued.

health-care-student-presentationA notification that serves as a reminder will be mailed to you 45 days before its expiration date. The notice will be sent to the address that is found on the Registry; that is why it is important to notify the Registry and update your records if you moved to a different address.  Remember that the notice serves only as a reminder and is not a part or necessary in the recertification process.

In order to become eligible for recertification, the nursing aide must have worked, with pay, as a nursing aide at a nursing home in New York or for an approved nursing aide employer for a minimum of seven hours within the last 2 years. The work experience will not qualify if the nursing aide worked for a nursing home or an employer who is not approved by the State of New York.

It is important that the license is renewed before it expires. Expired licenses will only be renewed if the nursing aide retests or retrain and retests, depending on the method that the holder used for certification. Nursing aides with an expired license but is still working in a nursing home may continue to work for only that nursing home or healthcare facility, provided that the employer immediately submits the required application forms along with the necessary fees to Prometric. Recertification costs $40, which are paid by the employer.

As soon as the application form is received and that eligibility for renewal is established, a new CNA license and a wallet card will be sent to the address of the nursing aide. The license will now contain updated information such as the new date of expiration.

•    Submit the in-facility testing application forms to Prometric at least 10 working days before the requested examination date. The forms will already include the candidate’s application forms and the payment for the fees.
•    Providing the necessary space before the start of the license exams.
•    Orient the NAE to the exam and candidate waiting areas, and other resources like the restrooms.
•    Establish the procedures to ensure that the candidate that will do the role of the resident for each skills test will be possible.

To help the candidate when taking the exams, the nursing facility is recommended to remind them to bring the necessary items and wear the appropriate clothing. The candidates should also be reminded to come in early so to avoid being late. Tardy candidates will no longer be allowed to enter the exam room and take the exams. All payments for those candidates will automatically be forfeited.

If a nurse aide candidate is unable to take the exam on the appointed schedule, he/she should immediately inform the training program’s coordinator. It will be the coordinator’s role to inform Prometric of the reason and request to have the candidate’s exam date rescheduled. To avoid forfeiting the testing fees, Prometric must be informed no less than 5 days before the exam date.

A certified nurse aide that is currently registered in a different state’s NAR may be able to work in New York if he applies for reciprocity. If he gets approval, his name will be entered on the NYSNAR and he will receive a New York State-issued CNA license, which is required when working in a nursing home.

students-in-lesson-for-cnaHiring facilities are also required to check the nurse aide’s certificate before they hire them. There are several different ways to do this. These methods include:
•    Going online at www.prometric.com/NurseAide/NY
•    Calling the Interactive Voice Response at (800) 918-8818
•    Dialing the IVR and asking for a live operator. This option is only available from Monday through Friday at 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Unlike other routes, those who are applying for reciprocity are no longer required to take any additional training or exams. All that they have to do is to fill-out the application form, provide a copy of a current out-of-state nurse aide certificate, and provide a $50 paycheck as payment for the reciprocity fee. If your current name is not the same on your license, you will need to provide additional documents that prove your name change such as a marriage license.

CNA certifications for the state of New York are only valid for up to 24 consecutive months. It is advisable that the license must be renewed before it expires since expired licenses can only be renewed by taking the state’s license exams again. According to the policies, if you are currently employed in a nursing facility as a nurse aide, it will be your employer who will process and pay for the recertification. The certification fee costs a total of $40.

There are different routes that one can take in order to become a nurse aide in the state of New York. One option is to take the competency evaluation exams while the other is to apply for reciprocity. When applying for the exams, one needs to be eligible to take it by completing a state-approved training program.

student-participation-exerciseNursing graduates are also allowed to take the nurse aide competency exams. Since they already took up the Fundamentals of Nursing, they will no longer be required to undergo any additional training. Before they apply, they will need to get the eligibility approval from the NYSDOH first. The application forms and the documents must be sent to:

New York State Department of Health
NATP/NAR Program
CA/ LTC, Empire State Plaza
Albany, New York 12237

The candidate will need to submit his nursing school diploma along with the application forms. In the forms, there will be some portions that the nursing school must fill out. If the school does not have a nursing aide training code, they must contact the New York State Education Department.
Once approved for eligibility, the candidate must be able to pass the competency exams within 2 years from the submission of his application forms. Like other applicants, he will have 3 attempts to pass the evaluation exam. If he fails and uses up all his attempts, then that is the time when he will be required to undergo retraining.

Registered nurses and LPNs are also allowed to take the exams if they wish to have a change in career. Like nursing graduates, they will no longer be required to enroll in a 75-hour nurse aide training program. Instead of a diploma, they will be asked to provide their RN/LPN license upon application. The license will then be verified by the New York Education Department.

Passing the license exams is the final step in becoming a CNA. By challenging the exams and passing them, the nursing aide candidate will gain entry on the New York Nurse Aide Registry. One who receives their nurse aide certification will be allowed to work in a nursing home or other long-term care facilities. The license exams for this state are handled by the independent testing company called Prometric. The exams comprise a written/oral exam and a skills evaluation exam.

group-of-health-care-traineesThe written exams are composed of 50 multiple-choice and 10 reading comprehension questions. At the Prometric website (https://www.prometric.com/en-us/clients/Nurseaide/Pages/NY.aspx) they have a reading assessment that you can take in order to determine if you are qualified to take the written exams. If not, then you may request to have an oral exam instead. During this exam, an evaluator will only read to you what is on the paper and will answer only questions regarding English.

The second part is the skills evaluation exam. There is a list of 22 nursing skills that were all taught during your training. Out of the 22, only 5 will be randomly selected and asked to be performed. In order to pass this part, you must perform all 5 skills satisfactorily in front of a nurse aide evaluator. Each skill will have checkpoints which will be used by the evaluators to rate your performance.

Aside from performing the actual skills, you will also be scored on your indirect care behaviors. These behaviors include what you do in order to promote patient safety, respect their rights, promote their independence, infection control, and maintain their comfort during the performance of each skill. If you want more details, you can see the chart on this link: https://www.prometric.com/en-us/clients/Nurseaide/Documents/IndirectCareBehaviors20110819.pdf.

The exam results will be mailed to you 5 days after your exam date. If you were able to pass all the tests, you certificate and a wallet card will also be included in the mail. If you happen to fail in one part, you may retake the part that you failed. All candidates are allowed to take the exams up to three times. If you fail for the third time, you will be required to undergo retraining before you are allowed to retest.

It is important that the information about a nurse aide on the Registry is up to date. It is the responsibility of the nurse aide to keep it updated. The employers of the nurse aides are also highly encouraged that they remind their employees so as to avoid any trouble in the future. Examples of important changes that the Registry must be informed about include change in name, address, contact number, and/or employer. Take note that there are no charges when an individual updates his records in the NYNAR.

class-of-nurse-aide-studentsWhen updating, a Service Request form needs to be fill out and sent to the Registry. The form can be downloaded from: https://www.prometric.com/en-us/clients/Nurseaide/Documents/New%20York/NYNAServiceRequestForm20110818.pdf. An individual may also send the request to update in a letter form, which can be faxed, emailed, or mailed to Prometric. A processing fee of $15 is charged if the nurse aide requests to have a new copy of his certificate with his updated information.

CNA certificates for this state only last 2 years. Its expiration falls on the last date of the month that it was issued. All nursing homes and home care agencies are the ones that are responsible for recertifying and paying for the recertification process for its employees. Recertification fees cost $40. The payment must be paid in the form of a money order, state voucher, and/or certified check. Keep in mind that personal checks are not accepted. The payment must be made payable to the NYS Commissioner of Health, NYNA to Prometric. All payments must be sent along with the recertification forms. In order to work in the state of New York, one must be able to gain entry into the NAR. This can be done by being able to challenge and pass the competency evaluation exams which are given by Prometric. The exams are done in order to determine the competency of the nurse aide candidate in terms of knowledge and skills in taking care of the patients.

students-in-group-paticipation-exerciseThe first part of the exams is the written examination. The exam is consists of 60 questions that are all multiple-choice. Every candidate has a total of 90 minutes to answer all of the questions. All of the questions will be in multiple-choice format with only one correct answer. One can download a sample of a written exam at www.prometric.com/nurseaide. The questions on the sample test are formatted in the same way as of the actual exams. The practice exams however, only consist of 50 questions. Each practice exam costs $10 and can be paid online with the use of a credit or debit card.

The written exam is also offered by the testing centers orally. This is helpful for the candidates who are not that good with reading English. To have an oral exam, the candidate will need to request to take it during the time he applied for the competency exams. Nurse aide candidates who choose to take this test will be given a player and a headset to listen to the questions. The candidates are allowed to replay the questions if they have any trouble hearing them.

The second part of the exams is the clinical skills portion. Upon completion of the class you will need to submit a completed background check, school transcripts, fee, and application to apply to take the nurses aide exam.

students-in-group-exerciseTaking the competency exams is one of the ways to gain entry into NAR. In order to establish eligibility to apply for the exams, one can enroll in and complete a state-certified CNA training program. If a nurse aide candidate is currently employed in a NY nursing home may not be charged for any cost of nurse aide training, which includes the costs for books and other materials, or for the costs of Competency Exams. All the charges will be paid by the State of New York.

When the nursing home is paying for the nurse aide testing, the payment must include the name of the candidates that are testing on that day. The payments must be made in the form of a money order, company check, or a certified checks that is made payable to the state’s Commissioner of Health. Personal checks and cash are not accepted.

There are also other ways to gain reimbursement for nurse aide training. If an individual who paid for his own training and competency exams gets hired in a nursing home within 12 months from completing the training or date of testing, he may request reimbursement from the nursing home. It is important that the individual keeps all the original receipts he got from the training.

The nursing home will then take the receipts and mail their copies to the New York Department of Health. It will be the state that will issue the payments to the nursing home, which will be used to reimburse the nurse aide. Although there are several different routes to get a New York CNA certificate, there are only two general ways to gain entry into the state’s NAR. One is to take the competency evaluation exam, which is for those who completed a training program, nursing graduates, and foreign registered nurses; while the other is directly applying to gain entry into the Registry. The latter one is for those who are already nursing assistants from other states who are applying for reciprocity and for U.S. RNs and LPNs who want to become a nurse aide.

students-in-classroom-lectureTo qualify to take the CNA exam in the state of New York you first need to attend an approved training program. The program needs to teach a total of 75 hours of combined classroom instruction and experience in a clinical setting. In addition to enrolling in instruction, you also need to submit a completed application and a receive a state and federal background check before you can apply to take the nursing assistant test.

The competency evaluation exams consist of two parts in which the nurse aide candidate must be able to pass both of them in order to gain entry into the Registry. The first part of the exams is the written exams, which consist of 60 multiple-choice questions. The written exam is also available orally. This is advantageous for those that have English as a second language and have difficulty in reading in English. To take an oral exam instead of a written one, a request must be made on the same date that the application to take the exam is made.

The second part of the examination is the clinical skills test. In this portion, the candidate will be performing 5 nursing skills in front of a nurse aide evaluator. Before the start of the exam, each candidate will be given a sheet that contains the general instruction for this portion. To pass this, one must be able to perform all the skills satisfactorily.

A candidate is only allowed to take the exam in an approved testing area. For those training facilities that wish to conduct the examination, they will need to apply for in-facility testing from Prometric. An available application form can be downloaded at: https://www.prometric.com/en-us/clients/Nurseaide/Documents/New%20York/NYNARequestforInFacilityTesting20111104.pdf. For those who are currently not employer or are employed in a facility that is not allowed to conduct the tests, they will have to take the exams at a Regional Testing Site.

Every applicant is allowed to take the exams up to three times. After failing for the third time, the candidate will need to undergo retraining before he will be allowed to retest. When retaking, the candidate will only need to take the exam that he failed in.

An initial CNA certification that was issued in New York is only valid for up to two years. Every certificate has its expiration date on the last date of the month that it was issued on. For example, if a nursing aide certificate was issued on the month of March of 2012, its expiration date will be on March 31, 2012.

health-care-instruction-courseBefore a certificate expires, the holder will receive a notice from the Registry. The notice serves as a reminder and is usually mailed about 45 days before its expiration date. The Registry will mail the notice on the mailing address that is on the nursing aide’s records. This notice however is not important in the recertification process.

In order to become eligible for recertification, the nursing aide must have worked at least 7 hours as a paid nursing aide for the past 24 months. According to the state regulations, it is the job of the nursing aide’s employer to process recertification and pay for its fees. If the employer is not approved by the NYSDOH as a nursing aide employer, the work experience during that time will not be honored and the nursing aide may not be eligible for recertification. If the employer wishes to get certified, he will need to contact the state’s DOH at (518) 408-1297 and ask for approval.

If a certificate is not renewed before its expiration date, it will be considered lapsed. A lapsed certificate can only be renewed by either retesting, or retraining and retesting. This will depend on which application route that the nursing aide followed to gain entry into the Registry.

If there are any changes in the personal information of the nursing aide, employers are encouraged to remind their employees to inform and update the Registry. These changes may either be a change in name, address, contact information, or employer. Once the certificate is renewed, the new information will be placed on the certificate. The nursing aide can also request for a duplicate copy of his/her certificate by paying the appropriate amount.

Nurse aide applicants wanting to work in a nursing facility in the state of New York are required to be certified if they want to work. This can be established by either directly applying for the NAR or taking the license exams.

medical-class-noticeThe only individuals who are allowed to directly apply for the Registry are RNs, LPNs, and CNAs that are registered in a different state. When they apply, they will no longer be required to undergo any additional training or testing. All they have to do is to send the application forms along with documentations that show proof of their training and experience. For example, RNs are required to show their nursing license, while CNA’s are required to show a current out-of-state certificate.

For those who are taking the license exams, eligibility must also be established before they are allowed to apply for the exams. For individuals who have no background in the medical field, they will be required to complete a CNA training course that is approved by the DOH.

Nursing graduates, foreign registered nurses and nurse aides who had their license expired but completed their training on or after July of 1989 are allowed to directly take the exams. Nursing graduates and foreign nurses must prove their eligibility by submitting certain documents to the Registry.

Each applicant is given 3 attempts to pass both the oral/written exam and the clinical skills exams. All the tests must be passed within two years from passing the application forms. If the candidate fails after the third attempt, he will be required to retrain and reapply for the exams.

The nurse aide applicant is reminded to keep all the receipts of their training and testing. If the nurse aide is able to find work within one year from taking and passing the exams, he will be eligible for reimbursement. The nursing facility will copy the receipts and send them to the state’s DOH. The DOH will then send the payments to the nursing facility, which will be used to reimburse the nurse aide.
