Becoming a nursing assistant in the state of Minnesota is not so challenging and the requirements are very similar to those of other states. The first step is to enroll and finish a nursing assistant training program. The program should be state-approved.

elderly-woman-posing-7733Before you enroll in CNA training classes you will want to ensure it is approved by the state. These programs are required by the Federal government to offer a total of 75 hours of training and may only use either the curriculum approved by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities or the one by the American Red Cross.

Once you are though with the program, your next step is to take the state exams. The exam is made up of two parts, in which, you must pass both parts to get your license. The exams are composed of a written examination and a return demonstration of the basic nursing competency skills. You are allowed two hours to take the written portion which contains seventy multiple choice questions. During the manual skills demonstration you will need to adequately perform five different skills successfully. For the applicant’s name to be entered on the Registry, the applicant must be able to pass all the exams. The competency exams are handled by Pearson Vue. You can call them with questions regarding testing at 1-800-274-0504.

For those who are already working as a nursing assistant at a licensed facility, they must complete a program and pass the competency exams all within 4 months. If they try to challenge the competency exams without enrolling in a program, they will not have the normal 4 months. The licensed facility will have to ensure that the individual they hired is competent in handling patients.

Nursing Assistant Certification in Minnesota

You need to have a CNA certification in Minnesota before you can apply as a nurse aide for a long-term care facility.  The state’s nurse aide registration is handled by the Minnesota Department of Health and it contains the names of applicants who have successfully passed the training and examination of the state.  You should also comply with the requirements set forth by the federal government in order to be allowed to take the certification exam.  Below you will find all of the current requirements to become certified as a nursing assistant in the state of Minnesota.

A nursing assistant or nurse aide works in nursing facilities or healthcare facilities under the supervision of a licensed medical practitioner.  You cannot apply as a nursing assistant without first passing the exam and being entered on the state’s nurse aide registry.  Those who are already working under the capacity of nurse aides should enroll themselves at a state-approved training program as well as pass the nurse aide exam within 4 months of being hired in a nursing facility.

holding-hands-11If you want  to become a nurse aide you should first train at an accredited nursing assistant training program that offers that state approved amount of instruction.  The training requirements are 75 hours of training with a curriculum based on either the one set by the Red Cross or by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities.  The course covers learning about nursing assistant skills and techniques such as basic care, grooming, nursing skills as well as taking note of a patient’s progress.  The applicant will also be reimbursed by the government if he is able to return receipts of the expenses incurred during the training within a year from the time he or she takes the state exam.  This privilege comes with the condition that the applicant should be employed as a certified nurse aide for 90 days from the day that the receipts are sent. In addition, training should be supervised by a registered nurse.

After completing the nurse aide training program, you can now apply to take the examination.  The applicant should submit necessary documents such as fingerprint cards, photo ID, passport sized photos, certificate of completing the training, as well as the fee for the exam.  If an applicant passes the exam, his or her name shall be immediately entered on the state of MN Nurse Aide Registry by the Department of Health. A person’s registry number will be their social security number.

Reciprocity is also available for those who already have a CNA certification from another state and is currently on an active status and is in good standing.  The applicant should also show at least 8 hours of paid work as a nursing assistant.  He or she should submit the necessary papers such as endorsement forms and proof of certification.  The processing would take about 30 days. The license will be renewed after 2 years and the applicant should submit proof of employment for at least 8 hours as nurse aide.  If the license expires, the certification will be considered inactive. There is also a required in-service training of about 12 hours per year for the nursing assistant employed at a nursing facility.

Minnesota Department of Health Nursing Assistant Registry

The Minnesota Department of Health Nursing Assistant Registry provides the necessary information that you need when verifying the certification status of a nursing assistant in the state.  It is important for employers to verify the certification of a nursing assistant first before hiring them as the state does not allow the hiring of such assistants when their names are not included in the registry.  The verification can be done easily as it only takes a few simple steps to perform.  The results will be provided once you have called to speak with a registry representative and provided the appropriate name and social security number for identification purposes.

According to the rules of the state, no one can be allowed to work as a nursing assistant in any long term care facility unless their names had been entered into the registry.  To place your name on the registry, you will have to finish an accredited training program first and then successfully pass the competency exam which is conducted by the state.  It involves both a written and a skills exam which has to be passed. You can also be placed in the Registry if you are currently in a good standing from another registry in the U.S.

elderly-group-46If you wish to work in Minnesota as a nursing assistant and you have a current active license in another state, you can apply for an Interstate Endorsement Form.  You can fill up the form electronically or you can download it and have it sent to the Registry.  You will have to wait for about a month in order to have your name included in the state’s nurse aide registry.

To maintain an active status on the registry, you will have to provide at least eight hours of paid employment in the capacity of a nursing assistant for every 24 consecutive months.  Failing to provide the said employment shall render your status inactive on the registry.  You will need to contact the registry to find if your employer is included on the registry’s list and if your employment in them would qualify for the said 8 hour work.  It is important to have duties and responsibilities which are congruent to the tasks of a CNA or they shall be deemed void.  You will not be required to do inservice work in order to stay on the registry.  You can read more about MN nurse aide requirements here.

The registry does not issue any paper or duplicate copies of your nursing assistant certification.  You can however request for a copy if you have tested for the certification exam within the last 24 months.  You will be asked for a small fee for the processing of the certificate.  Name and address changes should be sent directly to the registry.  You must furnish a copy of a legal document showing your name change and you can easily call the registry for an address change.  There is an available update form which you can download from the website in order to change any personal or employment information or if you wish to provide additional information to your profile.

health-care-facility-resident-mn-99292Getting your name on the Registry is the most important part to become eligible to work in this state. You will only get it there if you are able to pass an approved competency evaluation exams. These exams are composed of a written and a skills demonstration exam. Passing both exams is the requirement to get your name on the Registry. If you pass the exams you will get your license and you will become certified for a period of 24 months. After 24 months you will need to renew by showing work verification to the state registry.

If you are already working while enrolled in a state-approved training program, you must finish the program and take the license exams. You could also directly take the exams without undergoing proper training, if you feel you have the experience required to pass the them. The advantage of enrolling in CNA classes is that you will be more prepared to take the exams and will have 4 months to complete the necessary requirements.

If an individual has completed training and has also passed the competency exams, he or she must still apply for the Registry. The hiring facility must take note of this since having a passing score on the evaluation exams is still not a guarantee of the individual being on the official registry. If you have submitted the requirements, you may have to wait 4 weeks for your name to be entered on the Registry. You can contact the registry support through their email at: health.FPC-NAR@state.mn.us or call them toll free at 1-800-397-6124.

The requirements for being a nursing aide in Minnesota are similar to the other states. You will need a license to be able to continue working in the state as a nursing aide. To get your license, you will have to take the state exams. One requirement for you to be able to take it is that you must finish a nursing assistant training program that is approved by the state.

senior-citizen-with-ice-cream-7782While involved with your training you will get hands-on skills practice using the most popular procedures necessary for the job. Some of the tasks you will learn to perform are: catheter care, recording vital signs [pulse, respiration, blood pressure, temperature], dressing/grooming, housekeeping, safety methods, range of motion exercises, use of transfer belt, feeding, bathing,  use of bedpans, and restorative care.

After you fully complete your school classes you can turn in an application to take the exams. This must be completed before you can work in a care facility. The exams contain two parts which are a written and a demonstration test. The written test has 75 multiple choice questions covering basic theoretical problems related to the job. For the demonstration you will need to perform several of the tasks you practiced during training. For you to become officially certified to work you must pass both portions.

Once approved you are licensed for a period of 24 months and will be notified prior to your renewal date. Renewal is accomplished by submitting work verification of at least 8 hours in a long term care facility, nursing home, or hospital from your employer. Call the Minnesota Department of Health to get more details at 651-215-8705.

It is no surprise that there are now a lot of training facilities that want to start offering CNA training programs. There are only two approved curriculums that a training program may use. One is the curriculum that is approved by and is being offered by the American Red Cross and the one that is approved by the Minnesota State Colleges and University.

If you want to start your very own training program your first tasks is to call Bonnie Wendt at the NAR at (651) 201-4127. When you get a hold of Bonnie, you will then ask for an application form. When you apply, you should already have qualified instructors. You must also have a nursing home that will be available for the clinical portion of the training, as well as a college that is able to provide the testing for the students’ completion of training. Once you have all of those, you can send all the necessary paperwork, along with the application forms to Bonnie Wendt.

Being a nursing assistant in the state of Minnesota is one of the best ways for you to enter in to the medical field. These workers will be tasked to take care of the patient with only the most basic of nursing skills that they learned in the training program.

elderly-woman-eating-ice-cream-9922As a nursing assistant student, you will be under the supervision of licensed nurses when you are training. Those who are working without a license are given only up to 4 months to enroll in an approved training program and pass the license exams within that time. According to the law, an individual who is working as a nursing assistant prior to enrolling in CNA classes may not be charged for any expense of the training program. These charges will go to the individual’s employer. That is why it is important that the facility calls the training sites, to validate their fees.

If you follow the requirements of the state of Minnesota, becoming a nursing assistant there will not take very long and you can qualify to be reimbursed for your training expenses. The first step is to complete an instruction program that is approved by the state. You will learn in the programs the skills and knowledge needed to properly care for patients. After which, you can then apply to take the nursing assistant license exams. You need to pass the two parts of the test to get your license.

elderly-man-with-american-flag-99221One great thing about becoming a nursing aide in Minnesota is that a person can already work as a nursing assistant prior to applying for the NAR if one enrolls in CNA classes that are approved by the state immediately. During that time, the hiring facility will have to assure that the person is well capable of handling the patients/residents. The candidate will be given a maximum of 4 months to complete his training, pass the license exams, and get his name on the Registry.

A person who was able to complete a state-approved training program and pass the competency exams but is still not on the NAR may also start working as a nursing aide. This of course is if you fax your proof of training and your scores for the exams to the NAR. It will take around a month to get your name in the Registry. The hiring facility has to remember that the scores itself does not guarantee that the person will get in the Registry. They are still required to call the Registry at (651) 215-8705 or 1-800-397-6124 to verify the license status of the person.

If the facility has any questions about the background checks of an individual, they will have to direct all questions regarding criminal records to the Department of Human Services, Background Studies and Investigation Section. They can contact the department by calling (651) 296-3971. The Registry does not keep any records pertaining to background checks.

This is the best time for you to enter the medical field. If you have not decided on how to enter, then you should consider being a nursing assistant or nurse aide. Nursing aides work in nursing facilities, like nursing homes, or other health care institutions. Nursing assistants help the patients with their hygiene, maintain the room, as well as provide support and other forms of comfort.

elderly-women-arts-and-crafts-9001The great thing about training as a nursing aide in Minnesota is that you can get reimbursed for your costs. Those nursing aides who want to get reimburse must turn in their receipts within 1 year from the taking of the tests.  When you submit the receipts, you should be working for at least 90 days. The facility will not be obligated to reimburse for nurses who are not employed for at least that time.

The hiring facility is also given a maximum of 90 days to give the reimbursement to the applicant. Keep in mind that only nursing homes and board care homes are the ones that are required to reimburse nursing assistants.

If you were hired prior to your training, you will not be charged for any of the costs. Instead of applying for reimbursement, all training costs will be directly charged to the hiring facility. It is important that the facility call the training program to validate the costs of training.

Once you have met the training requirements you can schedule a date to take the license examination. Pearson Vue is the company that handles the administration of the test. You can contact them regarding testing and reservations by calling them toll free at 1-800-274-0504. Those who are capable of passing both parts and meet the other state requirements become certified. Once certified a licensee is added to the registry that is used by employers to verify validity of a candidate. You will need to renew your license before the 24 month due date.
