If you wish to be a nursing assistant, you should know what being employed in this occupation is all about. A nurse aide works in a long-term care facility, such as a nursing home, or other health care facilities. They are tasked with taking care of the patients with the use of basic nursing skills. When they work, they work under the supervision of a registered nurse and perform duties to help residents and assist the medical team.
Your first task on the road to becoming a nurse aide is to look for an approved CNA training program to enroll in. Approved classes are only using the curriculum that was developed by either the American Red Cross or the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. They are required by the law to offer a minimum of 75 hours of training. Your training will be composed of classroom instructions, nursing competency skills training, and actual clinical duties. There will also be some sites that will include Home Health Aide training.
After your training, your next step is to challenge the competency evaluation tests. When you apply, you will need to submit, along with the application form, other documents such as passport-sized pictures, photo ID, proof of your training, fingerprint cards, and the payment for the different fees.
Keep in mind that the fees that you are paying are for the exams and not for the Registry. The state does not have any processing fees to get into the Registry. Examinations are conducted by Pearson Vue. You should only take them at approved testing sites. You can find a list of the sites at http://www.asisvcs.com/indhome_fs.asp?CPCAT=0624NURSE.
When the applicant arrives at the testing location, there will be a two-part exam. The written test has 70 multiple-choice questions relating to common procedures and techniques. For the skills test, you will need to demonstrate your ability to perform several tasks in a real-life setting.
Those who pass both parts are deemed certified and have an active status on the registry for the next 24 months. You will receive a notification about 3 months before your renewal is due from the registry notifying you to submit work verification. You can contact the MN Department of Health at 651-215-8705 to speak with a staff member to learn more.
