students-at-nursing-assistant-classIn accordance to the law, all nursing assistants who were recently hired must be subjected to a Mantoux test. This test will be done by either a physician or an advanced practice nurse no less than two weeks before the start of duty. There are some facilities that will do the test immediately upon hiring. If it was done upon employment, the examination may be deferred up to 30 days before the start of work.

This test is not only limited to nursing assistants but is a mandatory screening for all new employees. The test will be a two-step Mantoux tuberculin skin test that includes 5 tuberculin units. The only employees that are exempted from this test are those that got a negative on a two-step Mantoux skin test within the last year, those who got a positive in the same tests, and those who were able to get the necessary treatment for tuberculosis.

A Mantoux test determines whether a person has tuberculosis or not. The test if positive if the results yield at least 10 millimeters of induration.   If positive, a chest x-ray will be done to support the findings and if necessary, this will then be followed by chemoprophylaxis.

An employee with a positive result will be referred to either his personal physician or to the hiring facility’s contracted physician. If the tuberculosis is active or at least suspected to be, he will be asked to refrain from work up until the physician deems it fine to go back.

The Directors of Nursing has viewed this law as an extended requirement to the students who will also handle the patients during the clinical portion of their training. As a result, nursing assistant candidates are also required to undergo this testing. The test will be done before the student starts class.

The first thing to do when becoming a nursing assistant is to choose a CNA training program that you will enroll in. You should make sure that it is state-approved before you enroll in it. After finishing the program, you should also make sure that the type of program that you chose matches the one that you are going to get your license for.

student-with-backpack-going-to-schoolBusiness-minded people are now taking advantage of the increasing demand for nursing assistants and personal care assistants. With more and more people enrolling in either CNA or PCA programs, there is now a demand for more training facilities.

If you want to start your very own training establishment, you can get the application forms and the guidelines from the Certification Program. This is also where existing training facilities get the forms for their re-certification.

All training programs must first be approved by the Certification Program before they take on any students. The approval process will slightly vary depending on the type of training facility that is seeking for approval. The process will officially start once the application form has been received, as well as the applicants proposed lesson plan.

To ensure uniformity, as well as impose a standard of training and education, the Department of Health has created an approved training Curriculum. All the contents in the approved curriculum must be taken up during the period of training. Under no circumstances should a training facility add or remove content from the curriculum.
The modules in the curriculum include:
•     The Core Curriculum for NATCEP
•    Psycho-social Needs of the Patients
•    Physical Needs of the Patients
•    Spiritual, Recreational, and Activity Needs of the Residents.

In order to maximize the learning process, the contents of each module may be reorganized depending on the instructor’s observation. Each of the modules mentioned should include both a classroom and a clinical aspect of training. The textbooks that are used to teach the concepts in the modules are chosen by the instructors.

The completion of a state-certified training program is a requirement to become a nursing assistant. By completing a program that has been approved by the state, the individual may then apply for the competency exams afterwards. It is very important that before the nursing assistant handles the patients, he must first receive proper instructions.

two-college-girls-studyingWhile meeting the school and exam requirements, you must also pass background checks and provide certain documents. You have to specify what type of test you are going to take based on the type of program that you finished.

To ensure that the training will meet federal and state standards, all training facilities must use the curriculum that the Department had created. The entire content of the curriculum must be covered during the entire training course. Under no circumstances may a training facility be allowed to neither add nor remove anything from the curriculum. The trainings that are offered should cover:
•    The Core Curriculum for the NATCEP
•    Psycho-social Needs of the Patients/Residents
•    Physical Needs of the Patients/Residents
•    Spiritual, Recreational, and Activity Needs of the Patients/Residents.

Those mentioned above are modules that are offered in the NATCEP training. They should also include Student’s objectives, content map, and suggested and possible learning experiences. Keep in mind that although the modules should be presented in order, the concepts in each module may be reorganized in order to gain maximum learning.

Training should prepare the students for the challenge of taking care of the patients. To ensure that they are well capable of handling them, aspiring nursing assistants will be tested in the competency evaluations after completion of training. The competency exams, which are offered by PSI, consist of a written/oral exam and a skills evaluation. To get ones name on the New Jersey Nurse Aide Registry, one must be able to pass both parts of the evaluation exam.

One of the requirements to be able to work in the state of New Jersey as a nurse aide is that you must have a license. You can only get a license if your name is on the registry and that you have passed the state nurse aide license exams. The type of exam you will take will depend on the type of CNA training program you enrolled in.

medical-teamwork-practiceThe great thing about becoming a nurse aid in the state of New Jersey is that you can get compensation for your training. A nurse aide candidate who was employed by a licensed healthcare facility prior to enrolling in either a NATCEP or PCA training program may not be billed for any fee for the training. All the fees such as payment for books and other materials that will be used in the course of the training will be paid by the hiring facility or employer. In the event that the candidate is fired from the facility, he may still not be billed for the payments.

There are also other conditions that can allow a nursing aide to get reimbursement once he gets work. If a nursing aide has not received any offer for work within 12 months from the day he got his name entered on the Registry, he will be eligible for reimbursement of a reasonable cost from his first employer. The reimbursement will be on a pro rata basis.

To avoid any confusion, the training facilities, like community and private vocational schools, technical schools, and high schools should advise their students to keep the original receipts and a copy of them. These receipts should be presented to the employer upon hiring.

When a nursing aide becomes a regular employee, he will be subjected to the mandatory Mantoux testing, which will be done by either a physician or an advance practice nurse. This test must be done within two weeks before the first day of work. The Mantoux testing is done to protect the patient’s from communicable diseases. This test determines if the individual has TB or not.  If an employee has tested positive in the tests, he will be immediately referred to a physician. If the TB is active, the employee will be asked to leave work until the physician tells it is okay to go back.

For you to be a nursing aide in New Jersey, you must first complete a CNA training program. While in the program, you will be spending a number of hours on lectures and skill training in both the classroom and the clinical area. If you finish the program, you can then try to take on the state license exams.

college-students-in-class-discussionThere are generally two ways for a person to get a nursing aide certificate in the state of New Jersey. One is to challenge the competency evaluation exams, while the other is to apply for reciprocity. The latter option is only for those who are already a registered nursing aide from a different state.

Before one is able to take the license exams, a person must be able to acquire the necessary training. He can either enroll in a NATCEP or PCA training program. NATCEP training is for those who want to work in long-term care facilities, while the PCA is for those that wish to work in personal care homes. Both programs consist of similar training with slight variation in the time and its allotment. For example, NATCEP training consists of 50 hours of lectures and 40 hours of practical training, while in PCA training, they lectures take up 69 hours and the clinical duties only 16.

After the training, the next step is to call PSI for the examination reservations. PSI is an independent testing company that was authorized by the NJDOH to help in the administration, scoring, and the reporting of the results. It is also in charge of running the Nurse Aide Registry of New Jersey. To make a reservation, the candidates will need to contact (800) 733-9267. They can download a copy of the application forms, as well as a copy of a NA Practice Written Examination sample. If the candidate has trouble with written English, he may ask for an Oral exam instead. The testing centers will also accommodate those that request to have special considerations for certain disabilities.

For those that are applying for reciprocity, their certification process will be entirely different, except for the mandatory criminal background investigation that is required for all nursing aide candidates. When they apply, the applications will need to provide the Department of Health proof of their certification. The applicants must also not have any records of resident abuse or neglect. All the necessary forms will be provided in the Reciprocity Application Packet, which they can get from PSI.

CNA certifications in the state have given a new way for people to enter the medical field. With the increase in the number of people everywhere, there is also an increase in the demand for the poeple who provide health care. Health care facilities now turn to nursing assistants/aides to help them run their institutions. Nursing assistants, when working, are under the supervision of a registered nurse.

young-woman-student-demonstrationTo ensure that the residents receive top quality healthcare, the nursing aides are required to be certified if they wish to work in a long-term care facility. The certification process requires them to enroll in a CNA training facility that offers the NATCEP or PCA curriculum. This will make sure that the education and training that the nursing aide candidates receive are up to the standards of both the Federal and the state.

Since the training programs are offered by different institutions, the certification process will vary depending on what kind of training facility is applying. The certification process usually begins when the Certification Program receives the application form along with the facility’s proposed lesson plan. The modules on the curriculum are already fixed and not a single portion may be added or removed. The contents of each module however may be rearranged in order to accommodate maximum teaching and learning experience.

If the training facility fails to meet the Federal long-term care facility requirements, it will be placed in a two-year suspension. The facility however, may request to be re-evaluated after a year of suspension. During the time of suspension, the training program may not handle or take on any students. It also cannot serve as a clinical institution site for NATCEP training. The approval stamp that was issued by the PSI must be returned to the Certification Program if they are suspended.

female-medical-studentsThe license exams for the state of New Jersey are being conducted by PSI. The license exams are composed of a written/oral exam and a return demonstration of the basic nursing skills that were taught during training. It is also the work of PSI to maintain the state’s Nurse Aide Registry and the Nurse Aide Abuse Registry. By passing all the exams, you will gain entry into the Registry and get your CNA license.

The nursing assistant licenses in this state last only for 2 years. You must renew it before it expires. You will receive a notification 4 months before its expiration. A part of the renewal process is to update your criminal background on the Registry. Since you are only renewing your license, you will not be required to apply for the CBI again. Another requirement is to provide proof that you were able to work for at least 7 hours every 24 hours. If you have any questions about the renewal process, you can call the PSI Customer Service at 1-877-774-4243.

Because the nursing assistant license is a basic license, you will need to renew it if you have any advance certifications to renew. An example of an advance certificate is a CMA certification. Aside from the requirements to renew your nursing assistant license, there are also separate requirements that must be complied for the advance ones.

If you want to take care of patients as a CNA, you must first know what a nursing assistant is all about. Nursing assistants take care of the patients with the use of the basic nursing skills and knowledge they have learned while enrolled in a training program. They get to help the patient maintain and monitor their health status. While working, they are under the supervision of a registered nurse.

young-woman-student-at-school-eventIt is not enough to get your name on the New Jersey Nurse Aide Registry to work as a CNA. Your name and status on the Registry must also be valid or active. CNA licenses in this state last only for 2 years. Since the PSI is in-charge of maintaining the NJNAR, their renewal mailer will notify you 45 days before your license expires.

There are several conditions that must be net for your license to be renewed. These include:
• An active or valid nursing assistant certificate/license.
• Have worked and been paid for 7 hours of providing nursing or nursing-related services in a long-term care facility for the past 24 consecutive months.
• Have not gotten his/her certificate/license revoked or suspended.
• Completed the CBI and fingerprinting before the expiration of the certificate/license.

Since a nursing assistant certificate is a basic certification, advance certificates such as medication aide certificates will also require it to be active before they can be renewed. In addition to the requirements of renewing your nursing assistant certificates, there are also other requirements that are specific to the advance certifications.

To renew a medication aide certificate/license, you must:
• Complete the 10 hours of continuing educations, seminars, or in-service training every 24 months. These 10 hours will be divided equally into a review of the fundamentals of Nursing and skills and knowledge needed in the administration of medications, and 5 hours of topics that include current medications that are used in elderly care.
• Be able to provide proof of training and education to the PSI testing center.

class-of-nurse-aidesThe certification process to become a nursing assistant in the state of New Jersey includes a routine and mandatory criminal background check. Nursing assistant/personal care assistant candidates, nursing assistants applying for reciprocity, or those applying for renewal of certification are required to undergo this process. The background investigations are supported by fingerprinting.

For those who are applying for reciprocity, they will need to apply for the CBI and schedule an appointment for the fingerprinting. The necessary application form will be included in the reciprocity application packet. As for those who are enrolled in a state-certified training facility, their forms will be provided to them by their instructor. The Department of Health will be the one that will give the form to those who are applying through waiver.

After completing the application process, give the pink copy of the forms to your employer, if you have one. The blue copy will be for your personal records, and should be kept. The yellow copy of the application forms must be mailed to:

There are two type of CNAs in the state of New Jersey. One worked in a long-term health care facility while the other is involved in home care. Since there are two types of nursing assistants, there are also two types of programs and test. The NATCEP is for those that wish to work in nursing care facilities, while the PCA is for those who wish to be in personal home care services.

health-care-student-instructionThere are two ways to get your name on the Nurse Aide Registry. One option is to take the license exams after applying for them. Another is by applying for reciprocity. Each of these two methods has its own set of requirements, but there are also some that are present for both methods.

The number one requirement to become eligible to apply for the exams is to receive the proper training and educations, especially on the Fundamentals of Nursing. Those who want to become a nursing assistant can enroll in a CNA training program that offers NATCEP. These programs take 90 hours to complete. Nursing graduates and foreign nurses can also apply for the exams. Nursing assistant students from other states may also apply, if the training that they received is similar or equal to the training that is required in New Jersey.

The second option is only available for those who are already a nursing assistant that is currently registered to another state’s Nurse Aide Registry. They will need to provide to the state’s DOH proof of their training, education, and working experience. The applicant must also not have any records of patient abuse, negligence, and misappropriation of the patient’s property.

A common requirement for all who want to become a nursing assistant is to undergo a criminal background check. This includes those who are applying for reciprocity, getting a certification through taking the exams, or even those who are renewing their licenses. For those who are applying for reciprocity, the CBI application and fingerprinting forms will be included in the reciprocity application packet. The investigation process averagely takes 12 weeks to finish. Those who are already working in a long-term care facility will be given a temporary license if they answered “No” to the application questions.

Since there are two different types of nursing assistants in New Jersey, there are also two different CNA training programs that you can choose from. These are NATCEP and PCA. NATCEP is for those who wish to work in long-term health care institution, while PCA is for those who want to be in home care. The type of program you enrolled in will also determine the type of license exams that you are going to apply for.

nurse-aides-in-clinical-practiceA CNA certification is a requirement to work in the state of New Jersey as a nursing assistant. According to the law, all those who want to work in either a long-term healthcare center or a sub-acute unit must have a valid license/certificate. Those that work in an acute care unit may not necessarily be certified. The certification process for this state consists of passing the background checks for criminal records, completing a state-approved training program, and passing the competency examinations which are given by PSI through various testing centers.

The nursing assistant certification last only for 24 consecutive months. It must be renewed before it expires if you want to continue your eligibility to work as a CNA. Since PSI maintains the New Jersey NA Registry, their renewal mailer will send you a notification around 45 days before the expiration of your license/certificate. The renewal process requires the following:

•    Having a valid license/certificate
•    Being able to provide proof of having worked for a minimum of 7 hours as a paid nursing assistant in a healthcare facility or an agency that is approved by the Department of Health.
•    Being able to pass the criminal background check with fingerprinting.
•    License/certificate must not have been revoked or suspended.

If you have any additional questions about the renewal process, you can call the PSI Customer service at 1-877-774-4243 from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM EST.

You will also need to contact the CBI unit at (609) 292-4303 to schedule for your CBI. Since you are only renewing your license, there is no need to apply for the CBI again. The notice for the update on your criminal background check records will usually come before your license/certificate renewal notice. In the renewal process, there will no longer be any fingerprinting. The CBI Unit will just inform PSI once you are cleared.

young-woman-student-with-laptopPassing the evaluation exams is one of the final steps to become a nursing assistant. One of the requirements in order to take the exams is the completion of nursing assistant training from a program that is approved by the state. The approval process varies depending on what type of training facility is requesting for approval.

The initial step that all programs must do is to submit their lesson plan for approval. If the applying facility is a long-term care facility, the facility will need to pass a completed copy of the Approval of a Nurse Aide in Long-Term Care and Competency Evaluation program or the NATCEP the application form no less than 3 weeks before the request date. Aside from that a copy of the proposed schedule and a check for $75 must also be sent.

For those who want to start a private vocational school that offers the NATCEP, there will be additional approvals that they must get in addition to the Certification Program approval. They must also get approval from the Department of Education, Department of Labor and Workforce Development, and from the Department of health and Senior Services.

For those who want to apply for a private vocational school, they will need to contact the Department of Labor and Workforce Development at Trenton, NJ or call them at (609) 984-2242. When they call, they will need to set up an initial meeting to discuss the regulations regarding the NATCEP. A copy of the lesson plans must be sent to the Department of Health and Senior Services to start the approval process.

two-college-girls-study-for-examFor example, if a nurse aide is not employed, or has not been able to work, gets an offer or gets hired by a licensed nursing facility no later than 12 months after the nurse aide’s completion of the NATCEP, the facility will be required to provide a reasonable reimbursement of the costs that were incurred in the completion of the training program. The reimbursement will be in a pro rata basis during the period in which the nurse aide was employed. These costs may include, but are not limited to, payments for textbooks or other materials that were used during the course.

In the case where the individual receives an offer to work, on the day or prior to the start of the NATCEP, the individual may not be charged for any costs for the program like textbooks and other materials. All the costs shall be billed to the hiring facility. In the event of a termination of employment, whether it is voluntary or involuntary, the individual may still not be charged for the costs, since it is a part of the employment conditions.

To avoid any disputes about the amount of reimbursement, the training program facilities (community colleges, high schools, and private and community vocational schools) should advice the students to keep all the receipts (original) and show them to their hiring long-term care facility upon employment.
