Getting a CNA certification is the only way for you to work in California as a nursing aide. You can get a certificate by challenging the NNAP exam after completing a certified NA training program, apply as an equivalent-trained nursing aide, or apply for reciprocity.
CNA Training
The most common way to be a nursing aide is to challenge the NNAP exam. Before you can challenge the exam, you must first complete a nursing aide training program that is approved by the CA Department of Public Health. These programs are offered by community colleges, vocational or technical schools, private institutions, nursing homes, and hospitals. There are even some websites that are allowed to offer online training.
An approved program is required to consist of 150 hours of training. These hours are divided into classroom lectures and practical training. The state-approved lesson plan comprise of 16 different modules that will tackle different concepts like basic and personal care, infection control, mental health, aging process, communication skills, and many more. It can take 4-6 months to complete your training, depending on which program you choose.
After training, the next step is to challenge the NNAAP exam. This exam is currently conducted by Pearson VUE. It consists of a written/oral knowledge test and a clinical skills evaluation. Both of which are given on the same day. To get certified, candidates must pass all the tests.
Applying for Equivalency-Training
People with different educational backgrounds can become a nursing aide. Because of the high demand for the profession, licensed nurses and practical nurses also want to become a CNA. To get certified, they will still have to apply for and pass the NNAAP exam. Military-trained medics and corpsmen can also apply. If they were dismissed from the military, they are required to produce a copy of DD-214.
Before they apply for the exam, they must provide the ATCS proof of their training and education. They can give their transcript of records or a copy of their diploma. If they are eligible, the ATCS will provide them with information regarding the exam.
Applying for Reciprocity
The process of reciprocity is only for individuals who are already certified as a nursing aide in another state. When applying, they must have a current or active certification and a clean record. They must not be included in the Abuse Registry to be accepted. All applicants through this process are also required to be fingerprinted and undergo the Live Scan to check their background for criminal records.
Employers will only hire those who are certified by the ATCS. They check the certification of each of their applicants by going to http://www.apps.cdph.ca.gov/cvl/SearchPage.aspx or by calling (916) 327-2445. You can also go to the link or call the number if you want to check your own status.
