The most important thing to have when you want to become a nursing aide is to have a CNA license. You can only get one if you are able to pass the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program examination. If you are able to pass all the tests, you name will be automatically entered on the NAR, which is a master list of all the nursing aides who are allowed to work in a healthcare facility.

nurse-assistant-students-practicing-skillsThere are two parts of the NNAAP since it was designed to test both skill and knowledge. The first part is the written exams. For those who are not that good in reading English, they may request to have an oral exam instead. The majority of the questions will be multiple-choice, with the exception of the reading comprehension phase for the oral exam.

The second part is the skills demonstration on the basic nursing skills that were learned during training. Out of all that were taught, the applicants will only be asked to perform only 5. These five will be randomly selected from a list of nursing procedures. Every applicant will be placed in a simple scenario where they will be given 25 minutes to perform all the tests.  They will be performing them in front of a nurse aide evaluator. To pass this part, the applicants must be able to do all the skills satisfactorily.

Another option to be able to work as a nursing aide here is to apply for reciprocity. When applying, the applicant must have a current and active status on his state’s NAR. He must also have a good relationship with his state and be able to pass both the Federal and State background check for criminal records.

measuring-blood-pressure-practiceGenerally you must fit in to one of the following criteria to become eligible to take the nursing assistant exams in Mississippi:

1. Completed state approved training
2. Graduate of a nursing program
3. Out-of-state graduate nurse
4. Certified nurse aide from another state
5. Previously certified nurse aide with a lapsed license

Unlike the written exams, the oral examination has two parts. The second part is a 10 item test on the different terms that are commonly used in the healthcare facility. To pass the oral exam, the applicant must be able to pass the two parts. The first part is the 60 item multiple-choice test. Each question as well as its choices will be read twice by the examiner.
.
In the skills evaluation, the applicants will be placed on a certain scenario that is very much similar to the actual setting. They will be asked to perform a set of randomly selected nursing procedures which they may do satisfactorily. Examples of such procedures will include proper hand washing, application of knee-high stockings, assisting in the patient’s ambulation, and helping with other daily activities.
