Michigan CNA Certification

A CNA certification in Michigan can be one of the best ways for one to enter the medical field and gain the experience and training to help you advance in the health care profession. Nurses aide training does not usually cost a lot and only takes a few weeks time in order to be eligible to take the state exam.  Certified nurse assistants work in long-term care facilities taking care of the personal needs of patients who cannot afford the costs of hospital care.  This is also one of the best places to start a career in healthcare without much cost to the student.

The state requires one who would like to become a CNA to undergo a state-approved training program.  The course takes about 75 hours of classroom teaching with 16 hours of practical training in a nursing facility.  The latter being a part of a student’s exposure to the day-to-day work setting of a nurse aide.  The training should also be done under the supervision of a registered nurse and students should not be allowed to do things which they have not been yet taught.

relaxing-grandpa-221The course covers learning about infection control, resident’s rights and independence, basic nursing skills, personal care, care for mentally impaired patients, mental health, and safety or emergency procedures for patients.  The cost of the training can also be reimbursed by the state if the applicant is able to get hired within 12 months from the time he or she completes the training.  This is one of the best aspects of nurse aide training in the state of Michigan.

The completion of the state-approved training gives one the chance to apply for the examinations.  The test includes a written or oral test as well as a skills test.  The applicant should submit an application form, the certificate of completion of a training program, as well as a criminal background check from both state and federal levels.  The test is conducted by Prometric and one should visit their website in order to know the various subjects that will be covered for the exam.

The certificate is renewed every 2 years and one should show proof of paid employment for at least 8 hours for the past 24 months.  Proofs of employment could range from a notarized letter from your employer stating the length of your employment as well as the type of work done or a paycheck stub. The certificate will become invalid without this requirement and one should undergo another training if he or she fails to provide any proof of employment they would also be obliged to take the examination again. You can search and verify if a certification has active status by using the MI nurse aide registry.

The date of renewal is taken from the applicant’s last date of employment and the two years or 24 months is computed from that date. The state also requires at least 12 hours of in-service training for those employed in long-term care facilities. If the certification is not renewed within that time period, it is considered to be expired and one should undergo training again as well as retake the CNA examination.
