Louisiana CNA Certification

Work as licensed nurse aide can be one of the best occupation nowadays and looking for a CNA certification in Louisiana can be one of the best ways to begin that.  Louisiana is one of the state’s which has a strong demand for nurse aides as their nursing facilities continue to recruit new nursing aides for their expansion.  A certification is necessary before you can be able to work in Louisiana as a nurse aide.  You have to undergo proper training as well as pass their competency exam to assure that you have sufficient knowledge and skills to deliver your work. Certified nursing assistants work under the supervision of registered nurses in healthcare facilities, hospitals as well as in nursing homes.

You should first start at looking for institutions which provide state-approved training programs.  You should look for the Department of Health and Hospital’s approval for an institution before you enroll in their program.  The state requires at least 75 hours of training and may be longer depending on the school that one goes to.  Different institutions have different requisites before you get into their program and they also have different set-ups for the training.  The training includes both a classroom instruction as well as required hours of practical training at a nursing facility.  The latter provides the applicant with an exposure to what a typical nurse aide work would be.

hospital-care-11After completing the training program, you can now set a date to take the certification exams.  The test includes a written as well as practical skills test which an applicant should both successfully pass. You would be required to submit fingerprint cards, a government-issued photo ID, passport-sized photos, TB test results, as well as proof of immunizations to determine if you are physically capable of being a nurse aid.

To apply for reciprocity, one should have a current valid license from the state where come from and should be in good standing.  You should also have a background check from that state as well as in Louisiana.  Fill up the form for reciprocity and attach your social security in your application form.  You should also include documents to prove that you have undergone a state-approved training program and has passed that state’s exam.  Once you are able to comply with these requirements, you would not be required to undergo nursing assistant training in Louisiana.  The test however is a requirement to enter the Louisiana nurse aide registry.

The certificate will have to be renewed every 2 years and the board will send out the renewal forms to you at least a month before its expiration.  You should have spent at least 8 hours of paid work at a nursing facility under the supervision of a registered nurse.  This is a requirement as work in private care is not considered as CNA work. This is a new rule as the old system allowed private work to be counted as work hours.  It is now necessary to have worked under registered nurses supervision in order for it to be considered.

You can become a nursing assistant in the state of Louisiana by taking a state-approved training program first. There are several institutions which offer the course such as nursing facilities and technical and vocational colleges. You will be able to learn the required skills and knowledge through the program’s classroom and clinical sessions. You will be able to finish the course within a few weeks and you can apply to take the state competency exam immediately after graduating from the course.

hospital-equipment-33The exam is composed of both a written and skills test which should be successfully passed in order to gain certification and be entered in the state’s nurse aide registry. Once you are through with the exams, your name will be automatically entered in the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. This is very important since the state does not allow anyone to work as a CNA, if their name is not on the Registry. Keep in mind that in order for your name to remain listed with active status, you must renew your license every two years. Visit www.labenfa.com for more information about the licensure rules and what you need to do to renew your certification.

Nurse aide license holders are also welcome to work in Louisiana. Before they are allowed to work, they must first apply for reciprocity. When they apply, they must have a good relationship with their state and a valid license. They will have to complete the necessary application forms such as the reciprocity form and the Listing of State Registries. In these forms, there are a set of simple instructions that they will need to follow in order to complete their application. If you want to apply to another state, then you will have to contact their state and find out about their policies and guidelines.

According to the law, only certified nurse aides are allowed to work in CDPH-approved nursing facilities. To become certified one must complete proper training and pass the license examinations.

student-of-health-care-instructionTo help you prepare for the NNAAP exam, as make you eligible to apply for it, you will need to enroll in a CNA training course that is approved by the CDPH. Training consists of 150 hours which are divided into 50 hours of lectures and 100 hours of supervised training. Approved courses are handled by registered nurses with 2 years of nursing experience and some background about teaching adults.

You will learn different concepts that you will use when interacting with instructors to help you gain the necessary skills to handle patients. If you have spent around 16 hours in skills training, you can then try those skills out in a real health care setting. You can get the primary experience at a hospital or a nursing home.

To be enrolled in a course you must:

•    Be physically and mentally capable of taking care of patients
•    Be at least 18 years old
•    Be a high school graduate or at least possess a GED
•    Have no criminal records (http://www.cdph.ca.gov/certlic/occupations/Documents/ATCS%2098-4.pdf) that will prevent you from getting certified

If you want to become a nurse aide in California then you will have to challenge the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program. This is an examination program that is designed to evaluate the competency of nurse aide candidates. It will test them in both skill and knowledge. This examination is made up of a written (oral) knowledge test and a skills evaluation exam. Candidates must pass all the exams to get certified.

students-in-nurse-aide-demonstrationThe NNAAP examinations is not only limited to those who were able to complete an approved course. Registered nurses, LPNs, nursing students and graduates are also allowed to apply for the exam. Before they send in their application forms to the Regional Testing Center, they must first submit proof of education and training to the Aide and Technician Certification Section at MS 3301, P.O. Box 997416, Sacramento, California 95899-7416.

Your training is only valid for 2 years. You must pass all the tests of the NNAAP exams before it expires. If you fail in one part, you will be given another 2 attempts to reapply and retake the test you failed. If you fail after the 3rd time, you will be required to complete another training program.

Once you are certified, you will be required to renew your certification every 24 months. Failure to renew will result in the expiration of your certificate and you will lose your eligibility to work as a nurse aide. A notice is sent out by the CDPH at least 4 months before your certification expires. To avoid any problems when renewing, please inform the CDPH is you change your name or address.

If you already are a CNA from a different state, then you can apply for reciprocity. Apply for reciprocity will allow you to work in the state as a nursing aide. You should still have an active status and a good background to get approval from the board.

To receive additional details about the current requirements for certification you can contact the California Nursing Aide Registry by calling (916) 327-2445 or via email at cna@cdph.ca.gov. To ensure a training school meets all curriculum standards you can call the (TPRU) Training Program Review Unit at (916) 552-8873.
