Getting a CNA certification begins with you getting a criminal background check. Candidates who have been Pennsylvania residents for the last 2 years are required to get a state-level criminal background check before enrolling in a program. The check result is one of the requirements to get accepted into a certified program. A candidate is allowed to practice as an non-certified nurse aide for up to 30 days while waiting for the check results.
To maximize your time while waiting, it would be best if you start looking for a program that would fit your preferences. When seeking a program to enroll in, you need to remember to only choose a program that’s certified by the state’s Department of Education. Approved programs are required to offer a minimum of 80 hours of instructions, of which 37.5 hours are allocated for supervised clinical practice. During the instruction you will receive theoretical coursework and actual hands-on experience in a health care setting similar to what you would find in a hospital or nursing home.
While in the program, students will learn nursing skills such as monitoring and documenting a patient’s vital sign. They will help residents with their daily activities such as eating, bathing, dressing, exercising, ambulating, and toileting. Students will also learn about important nursing topics such as rights and independence, infection control, therapeutic communication skills, medical terms, and human anatomy.
Once you are through with your training, you will be eligible to apply for the CNA certification exams. These exams are divided into two parts – a written test and a manual skills demonstration. Both tests will be conducted on the same day at a certified testing center. If a candidate passes both tests, his or her name will be placed on the Pennsylvania State Nurse Aide Registry and will be given a Registry Card.

Once you’ve completed the exam and are included on the state registry your CNA license will expire every two years and must be renewed before then, so that you can continue working. The NAR contains all the names of nursing aides who have met the requirements to work in a Medicare/Medicaid nursing facility. A CNA program will help nursing aide candidates to gain the knowledge and skills that they will need in order to take care of the individual needs of the patients. Because of the increase in the demand for nursing assistants, there are now more people who want to become CNAs. One of the requirements to be allowed to work as a nursing assistant is to take the license exams, which in turn requires that the individual to complete a state-approved training program.
The license exams have two parts, one is the written exam and the other is the return demonstration on selected nursing skills. You will only receive your certification if you are able to pass both parts. For those who took the exams because they received authorization from the Office, they are only given one chance to pass. If they fail, then they must undergo a state-approved CNA training course and take the exams once they completed their training.
These programs are found all over the state and are offered by different institutions. Examples of such include technical and community colleges, high schools, and healthcare centers such as nursing homes. It is important that when you complete your training, you will have a total of 105 hours of training time, which will include no less than 75 hours of clinical duties.
