In order to become a nursing assistant in South Carolina, one must first receive the proper training. By receiving the appropriate training, an aspiring nursing assistant can become eligible to apply for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program examination. If the nursing assistant candidate is able to pass both the knowledge test and the skills evaluation, he will get his name entered in the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. According to the law, only the individuals whose names are on the Registry will be allowed to work as a CNA in South Carolina.

By passing the NNAAP exams within 3 attempts and within 2 years of completing the training program, the candidate will get his name entered on the Nurse Aide Registry. Pearson VUE will then send the new nursing assistant’s CNA card and wallet ID card to his address within 10 business days. Nurse aide certifications in this state are only valid for 24 months. To remain eligible to work as a nursing assistant, every nursing assistant must work for at least 8 hours while under the supervision of a registered nurse. If a worker fails to do this, he will not be allowed to renew his certification and it will expire. An expired certification can no longer be renewed. If he wishes to work as a CNA again, he will have to start from the beginning by enrolling in another training program and take the certification exam again.

An approved program will give you a minimum of 75 hours of training. You will be spending those hours in both classroom and clinical setting. You will learn different concepts such as human anatomy, communication skills, personal care, infection control, safety, emergency protocols, proper documentation, mental health and rehabilitation, and many more.

After you complete your training, you can work for a maximum of 4 months as a nurse aide while waiting to take your exam. The 4 months will start as soon as you complete your training. The competency exam in North Carolina is conducted by Pearson VUE. The exam consists of a written exam or an oral exam (70 multiple-choice questions) with a passing of 70%, and a skills evaluation (5 skills) that requires you to perform all skills satisfactorily to pass. If you do not pass all the tests, you will be given another 2 attempts to pass. Failing in the 3rd attempt will require you to undergo retraining before you can retake the exams.

CNA licenses are required to be renewed biannually. No individual is allowed to work as a nurse aid with an expired license. Renewal of a license before its expiration is also very important since expired licenses can no longer be renewed. To be eligible for renewal, you must be able to work for a minimum of 8 hours under the supervision of a registered nurse. You must also be paid for the nurse aide services that you provide. Volunteer work does not count as qualified work.

The first step in becoming a nursing assistant is to enroll in a CNA training course. These courses take 4 to 6 months to complete. According to the law, these courses are required to offer the students no less than 100 hours allocated for clinical duties and 75 hours of classroom instructions, which will include lectures and laboratory works. It is possible to be hired by a long-term care facility before you are officially certified. However, you are only allowed to work for up to four months and pass the exams and be added to the registry within that time.
