First of all, you’ll have to make sure that you will pass the federal and state criminal background checks. Failing these checks will mean that you won’t be allowed entry into the Nurse Aide Registry and won’t be given certification. Having records such as abuse, theft, or similar offenses may hurt your chances of passing the checks.

Nursing Aide Training

To ensure that patients receive only quality care from nursing aides, nursing aide candidates are now required to successfully complete a state-certified training course. The most common way to learn how to be a qualified nursing aide is by enrolling in a CNA course. These courses take at least 120 hours to complete. The hours are divided into at least 32 hours of supervised practical training and classroom/laboratory lectures. You can find suitable programs offered by any of the following institutions and schools:

–    Hospitals
–    Nursing homes
–    Community colleges
–    American Red Cross
–    Technical colleges
–    Vocational schools
–    Rehabilitation centers
–    Long-term care facilities
–    Private training institutions

Online courses are not acceptable in this state since they do not offer any hands-on training. Those who took up online courses will have to enroll in a CNA course to qualify for the NNAAP exam.

The National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Exam

The NNAAP exam is divided into two parts: a written (oral) test and a skills exam. The state’s  exam is conducted by the American Red Cross (ARC) with the help of Pearson VUE. Both tests are taken on the same day at either a certified training facility or a Regional Testing Site. Candidates are required to pass both tests to get into the Nurse Aide Registry and receive a CNA card.

In case of failure, each candidate is allowed to retake the exam twice. As soon as they receive the results, which is normally on the same they, they can immediately reapply and reschedule for a retest. When they apply once more, they’ll have to pay the corresponding fee of the exam(s) that they are going to retake. If a candidate fails for the third time, they he/she must undergo retraining before he/she can reapply.
