You must enroll in a state-approved CNA training program first to become a nursing assistant in Tennessee. During your instruction you will spend your time in both class lectures and clinical exposure. While there you will learn 25 fundamental nursing skills in the clinic, and you will be under the direct supervision of a registered nurse.

All the things that were taught to you in the training program will be tested in the license examination. There you will be tested on 5 of the 25 skills you learned during your class program. Those who complete the exam will be placed on the Tennessee nurse aide registry and be able to get a job as a nursing assistant.

According to OBRA ’87, a nurse aide must be certified and listed on a Nurse Aide Registry in order to work in a certified nursing facility. In Tennessee, you can gain entry into the NAR by either challenging the competency exam or by applying for reciprocity.

Reciprocity

An individual who is listed as a certified nurse aide in other state(s) may request to have his certification transferred to Tennessee. The benefit of reciprocity is that if the applicant gets approval, his name will still be listed in the previous state’s NAR.

When applying, the applicant must have an active or valid certification with a clean record. This means that he must not have any accounts of abuse, neglect, or theft that happened while at work. The applicant will have to complete the Verification of Out-Of-State Nurse Aide Registration Application. The first part is completed by the applicant while the second must be completed by the Registry he is listed in. There is no fee for processing when you apply for reciprocity in Tennessee.

Testing

The competency exam was designed to test the competency of the nurse aide candidate in his knowledge and skills. The state’s Department of Health has contracted the D&S Diversified Technologies to help conduct this exam. If the candidate is able to pass both the knowledge test and the skills tests, he will be entered into the Nurse Aide Registry and will receive his CNA card within 4-6 weeks after passing.

Before one can apply for the exams, the candidate must establish eligibility. The best way to do this is to complete a 75-hour training program. These programs are offered by different institutions such as nursing homes, hospitals, community colleges, and even online. Individuals who completed training in the military as a medic may also apply for the exams. When they apply, they will have to show proof of their training and experience.
