The process of becoming a nursing aide begins by enrolling in a CNA training course and ends with getting into the Nurse Aide Registry. The Nurse Aide Registry is a list of nursing aides who have been certified and are allowed to work in different nursing facilities. Employers will only hire the nursing aide applicant if his or her name is found on the NAR.
When looking for a suitable training course, please verify that the program you enroll in is approved by the Department of Health. This will ensure you that the quality of training that you will receive from the program meet the standards of both the federal and the state. You should be physically capable to handle patients to be enrolled in the course. You must also pass both the federal and state background checks. Aside from those, you will be required to provided some documents and pass some medical exams to be accepted into the program.
When you enroll, you will be spending the 75 hours of the training in classrooms and in the clinical area for your on-the-job training. Overall you will receive instruction in 25 different aspects of medical care by a skilled registered nurse. While in the clinical area, students will not be permitted to perform nursing skills and procedures that have not yet been taught or covered in the classroom.
Completing an approved course will make you eligible to apply for the competency exam. This is one of the two ways to get into the NAR. The second one is through reciprocity, which is only available to people who are already registered in another state as a CNA. Tennessee’s competency exam is conducted by the Headmaster Testing Service. It is an exam that will test the candidates in their knowledge and skills. If you pass all the tests, your name will be entered on the NAR and you will become certified.
You will have to complete the application forms to apply for the exams. You can get a copy of the forms at http://www.hdmaster.com/testing/cnatesting/tennessee/tnformpages/tnforms/1101TN.pdf. These forms must be sent along with your payment and a copy of your training certificate to D&S DT, PO Box 418, Findlay, Ohio 45840. Your payment must be in the form of a money order, cashier’s check, facility check, or purchase order. Personal checks will not be honored. If you are applying online through www.hdmaster.com, you can pay with either your MasterCard or Visa.
On the day of the exams, you are required to bring a valid government-issued ID and your Social Security Card. Both of these will be used for the check-in. If you fail to bring these two, you will not be allowed to take the exams and will not be given a refund. You must also come at least 20-30 minutes before the start of the exams to avoid being late. Latecomers are not allowed to proceed to the testing area.
The skills exam will cover 5 of the 25 skills you learned at the nurse aide school at random. The knowledge test will have multiple choice questions. Those who pass the exam and meet all of the necessary requirements will be placed on the Tennessee nurse aide registry and eligible to work for 24 months.
Once your name is on the Registry, you must keep your information updated to avoid problems when you renew your certificate. Please notify the NAR through writing if you changed your name or address. Your certificate will only be valid for 24 months and must be renewed by submitting proof of work history. If you wish to continue your eligibility to work, you must renew it before it expires.
