The state of Tennessee requires its CNAs to be trained and have a certification before being allowed to work. Training consists of classroom and clinical practice to teach you nursing skills used on the job. During your school instruction you will learn 25 different nursing proficiencies. The class is coordinated by a registered nurse with a minimum of two years experience. After completing the course the student can schedule a date to try and pass the competency exams.

The Registry is a list of people who have met the federal and state’s training and testing requirements. One way to get into the NAR is by challenging the state competency exam.

The competency exam consists of a knowledge test and the clinical skills evaluation. To get into the NAR, candidates must get a 75% average for the knowledge test and perform all nursing skills with 80% competency. In order to apply, you must first get the necessary training by completing a CAN training program, military training, or a nursing education program.

The knowledge test is normally taken as a written exam. Candidates are given 90 minutes to answer all 75 questions which are taken from different concepts like the roles and responsibilities of a CNA, infection control, safety, mental health, aging process, and many more. An oral exam may be taken in conjunction with the written exam if the candidate has difficulty in reading English. To get an oral exam, the candidate must request one with a written letter upon submitting his or her application. Ten of the questions will not be read. This will serve as a reading comprehension test.

In the skills evaluation, each candidate will be given 5 nursing skills to perform in a simple scenario. They will have 30 minutes to perform all of the skills.  Four of the skills will be randomly selected from a set list since the first skill will always be proper hand washing.  A complete list of the nursing skills may be found in the Candidate Handbook (http://www.hdmaster.com/testing/cnatesting/tennessee/tnformpages/tnforms/TNJan2013CandidateHandbookv10.0.pdf). The evaluator will base the performance on the steps done for each skill. Each step will correspond to a score. The candidate must not miss any important step.

D&S Diversified Technologies has been authorized by the Department of Health to conduct the exams. With the new system, an online examination may be taken through WebETest at selected regional testing sites. Candidates will enter their answers for the knowledge test via the computer. At the same time, the evaluators will also score the candidates in the skills exam with the use of the computer. The results for the exams taken through WebETest are normally released the following day and may be checked by going to www.hdmaster.com.

Once the candidate’s name is entered in the NAR, it will be CNA’s responsibility to maintain their records. They must renew their certification every 2 years to keep their names on the Registry. Workers can renew their license by verifying they worked one 8 hour shift as a nurse aide. No nursing assistant is allowed to work with an expired certification.
