You can start a wonderful career in the field of health as a nurse aide. California is one of the best places to train and become a nurse aide. To work as a nurse aide in this state, it is important that you complete a 150-hour training program that is approved by the CDPH and pass the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program examination or NNAAP exam.

first-aid-practice-dummiesWhen you enroll, your time will be divided into both lectures and hands-on training. You will be taught in the skills and knowledge in the fundamentals of nursing care like vital signs monitoring, the meaning of medical terms, emergency procedures, proper ways of assisting patients in daily activities, as well as emergency procedures and post mortem care.

Approved training programs are offered by different institutions and schools. The 150 hours are divided into 50 hours of lectures and 100 hours of supervised clinical practice. The scarcity of nurse aides and its increasing demands has made most health care providers offer free CNA training throughout the state. People who have financial problems can also seek aide by training in the American Red Cross, which offer their own training curriculum and testing.

If you decide to enroll in a training facility that offers the NNAAP, you can apply for the exams as soon as you are done with training. The NNAAP exams are offered by the Pearson VUE Testing Company. It consists of a written (oral) multiple-choice knowledge test and a practical skills evaluation, which are given on the same day. Those who have never been certified before as a nurse aide are required to pay ($90) and take both exams. Payments must only be in the form of money orders, company checks, or cashier’s checks. Incomplete applications will not be processed.

A candidate must pass both exams to get certified. They will have 2 hours to answer all questions for the knowledge test and 25 minutes to perform all required nursing skills. If a candidate fails in one part of the exam, he or she may reapply and retake the test he/she has failed. Candidates are only given 3 attempts to pass. If they fail after the third try, they will not be allowed to reapply unless they complete another training program.

CNA certificates must be renewed every 24 months. The ATCS sends out notices and forms to each candidate’s address at least 4 months before their certificate expires. That is why it is necessary to inform the ATCS if you change your name or address within 60 days of that change. You can inform ATCS by mailing this form (http://www.cdph.ca.gov/pubsforms/forms/CtrldForms/cdph0929.pdf) to them. You can also request for a new certificate with your updated information on it.
