The successful passing of the competency examination is one of the ways to gain entry into the Nurse Aide Registry and get a CNA 1 license. The competency exam, as created by the federal government, is composed of a knowledge-base and skill-based test. Each state has contracted with an independent testing company, which will aide in the giving, scoring, recording, and releasing of the test results. In the state of Oregon, that testing company is the Headmaster Testing Company.

young-female-college-student-smilingAlthough the application forms are sent to the Oregon State Board of Nursing, you can contact Headmaster at (800) 393-8664 if you have any questions and requests about:
•     Examination dates and nearest locations
•    Exam schedules, reschedules, and cancellation of exam scheduled
•    Access of test results.

When scheduling for your examination, you must choose a date that is at least 21 days after you submitted your application. If you want to have an oral exam instead of the standard written exam, you must send your request along with your completed application form, which can be downloaded online (http://www.oregon.gov/OSBN/pdfs/form/naexampacket.pdf).

On the day of your examination, you are required to arrive at the examination area at least 30 minutes before the start of each exam. Late comers will no longer be allowed to take the exam, and will not be refunded. If you have any problems with your exam date and need to either reschedule or cancel, please inform Headmaster as soon as possible. You are allowed to reschedule/cancel an exam date if you are able to notify them at least 3 days before.

As soon as the results of your exam are double-checked by the Headmaster scoring team, the results will be sent to you through the mail. You can also access your results by going to the Headmaster official website at www.hdmaster.com

As soon as the OSBN receives the notice from Headmaster that you passed, your name will automatically be added to their list. If you want to verify your status online, you can go to this link: http://osbn.oregon.gov/OSBNVerification/. If you still do not have your license number, you can search for your record by doing a name search.

Your status on the NAR will remain active for up to 24 months. The expiration date of your license will fall on midnight of your date of birth. A notice will be mailed to you, along with the renewal forms, at least 1 month before its expiration. A nursing aide cannot work with an expired license. An expired license may only be reactivated by taking the competency exam.

Equipping yourself with the knowledge and skills necessary to take care of each patient’s individual needs is one of the first things that you need to do if you plan to become a nursing aide. Since nursing aides work closely with patients almost throughout their entire shifts, it is important that all nursing aides know what they are doing.

nursing-student-giving-college-display-presentationDue to the demand of CNAs in Virginia, the number of institutions and schools that are now offering nursing aide training has increased. To help you look for a suitable program, you’ll need to remember to only choose a program that’s approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing. Not only will this ensure that you’ll receive proper training, you’ll also be allowed to proceed to the next part of the certification process, which involves taking the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Exam or NNAAP exam.

Approved training programs are required by the BON to offer at least 75 hours of training. Nursing aide training curriculums in this state are divided into theory and practical training. Both the theory and practical training are done simultaneously. Depending on the program you choose to enroll in, it can take you within 6 months to complete your training.

Applying for the certification exam is the next step in becoming a nursing aide. Normally, your instructor will provide you with the application packet and help you submit them to the NACES. If you don’t get one, or if you established your eligibility to apply through other means, then you can get one by downloading it from this link: http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/075301.pdf.

The NNAAP exam consists of a written/oral test and a clinical skills exam. The state has asked Pearson VUE to help conduct, score, and release the exam results. The names of candidates who will pass both tests will be forwarded to the BON. The BON will then issue the candidate’s certificate and send it within a few days after passing.

If you want to know more about the certification exam, you can visit www.pearsonvue.com and download a copy of the Candidate Handbook. If you visit their site, you can also get a sample knowledge test and the complete skills list that might come out during the exam.

There are quite a few requirements that must be met in order to take the state license exams in nursing aide. They include completing a CNA training program and passing the mandatory criminal background check. You should also be physical fit to be able to enroll in the training program.

college-women-friendsBoth federal and state regulations require a nurse aide to be properly trained and certified in order to work as a CNA in South Dakota. A nurse aide is an individual who provides, for pay, nursing and nursing-related services to patients who are in different health care facilities. Nurse aides work under the supervision of registered nurses.

To meet the training requirement, you will need to look for a 75-hour training program to enroll in. Before you enroll, you must verify that the program is certified by the state’s Department of Health to train nurse aide candidates. When enrolled, you will spend at least 75 hours in classroom for lectures and in the clinical area for the practical training portion of the program. By the end of your training, you will gain the knowledge and skills needed to be a nurse aide. You will learn different concepts like basic rights, safety, infection control, personal and basic care, mental health, illness, aging process, and many more.

The next step is getting certified. If you have never been certified as a nurse aide before, you will have to challenge the state certification exam. This exam consists of a multiple-choice exam and a practical skills test, which are given on the same day. The state’s Health Care Association has contracted Health Master Testing Services to help conduct and release the results of the test. To get certified, you must pass both portions of the certification exam in order to gain entry into the South Dakota Nurse Aide Registry.

Employers are required to verify the certification of a nurse aide applicant by going online to https://ifmc.sd.gov/. They will only hire the applicants whose names are found in the Registry. Your name will remain on the Registry for 2 years. To keep it there, you will need to renew your certification before it expires. One of the requirements is to find work as a paid CNA for at least 8 hours. The online renewal system has made renewing much easier. To do this, just go to the link provided and follow the instructions found there.

A CNA who is located in another state but wishes to transfer and work in South Dakota must apply for reciprocity before he is allowed to work. When applying, he must have a valid certification and a clean record. In addition to these, he must also pass the national background check before he can be approved for reciprocity. For more information on this, please call the SD Board of Nursing at (605) 362-2760.
