The first thing that you have to make sure of before you enroll in a CNA training program is if the program is approved by the state. You should also be at least 16 years old to be able to enroll in the program, as well as pass the criminal background check at both the federal and state levels. Those who enroll will also undergo a physical exam and submit their immunization records. Once attending a program, students will be taught fundamental nursing skills that cover theoretical class discussion and actual hands-on practice in a health center setting.

students-learning-health-care-proceduresThe Nursing Home Reform Act, which is now part of the OBRA of ’87 requires all nursing assistants to go through the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program or NNAAP. The NNAAP was created as a way to improve the quality of care that patients in long-term care facilities receive and a means to establish a standard of competency that all nursing assistants should have.

Each state is allowed its own way of meeting the training and testing requirements mentioned in OBRA. The State of Pennsylvania requires that training programs must offer a minimum of 80 hours of instruction, of which 37.5 hours must be allocated for supervised practical training while under the supervision of a CNA Instructor.

During your class instruction, you will learn the primary skills necessary on the job. Classes will be overseen by an experienced nurse. Some of the tasks you will learn include: range of motion exercises including turning and moving patients, infection control, housekeeping including bed making & organization, postmortem care, transporting patients using wheelchairs, assisting patients with canes & walkers, nourishment including nutrition & serving meals & feeding, catheter care including intake & output and draining, assisting with toileting including bedpans & urinals, dressing and bathing using baths & showers, and measuring and recording vital signs including taking the temperature, checking blood pressure, and respiration.

At the end of the NNAAP, all nursing assistant candidates are required to take the NNAAP exams.  Students are allowed two years to pass their test from the time they completed instruction. You can find a testing location near to you in Pennsylvania by contacting the American Red Cross at 1-800-795-2350 or through the school you signed-up with.

The NNAAP exams are composed of a multiple-choice written test and a manual skills demonstration. The exams will test a candidate in terms of knowledge and skills regarding all the things that are taught in an approved training curriculum. If a candidate passes both tests within 2 years after completing their training, their name will be entered into the Nurse Aide Registry. There are practice tests available to help you prepare and you can get them from Pearson VUE who can be reached at 1-800-852-0518.

The NAR is a master list of all nursing assistants who are certified to work in a long-term care facility that receives Medicare and/or Medicaid reimbursements. Employers are required to verify each of their applicants’ certification on the NAR before hiring them as long-term employees. If you wish to check your status on the NAR, please visit www.pulseportal.com.

If you are a certified nursing assistant in another state who is able to maintain a clean record and an active certification, you may work in Pennsylvania as a CNA without any further training or testing requirements by applying for reciprocity. If your certification has expired, then you are allowed to apply for the state’s NNAAP exams to try to reactivate your certification. Since each state has its own requirements for out-of-state endorsement, please call the Department of Health at (800) 852-0518. You can also visit www.portal.state.us.pa.

Unlike certain states, nurse aide certifications in Pennsylvania must be renewed every 2 years to remain eligible to work in a federally certified long-term care center in this profession. A nursing assistant is required to provide proof of employment for at least one day while under the supervision of a registered nurse to qualify for renewal. Self-employment or working in a doctor’s office is accepted as proper work for renewal. No CNA is allowed to continue working with an expired certification.

Avoid problems with renewal by informing the registry of any changes in name, address, social security number, or other personal information. Failure to inform them may put your name on the registry at stake. Inform the NAR by submitting the Change of Name/Address form or by visiting www.pulseportal.com. Workers may also renew their certification online through the link provided.

In all of the state of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia is the biggest one of them all. This city is also considered as the 5th most populous city in the entire country. The city is situated on the Northeastern part of the United States and is just along the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers. Philadelphia is known by many nicknames like “Philly”, “The City that Loves you Back”, and “The Quaker City”. As of the last census, their total population had already reached up to a total of 1,526,006 residents. They have a total area of about 142.6 sq miles.

You can find the Pennsylvania Hospital in this city. This is the very first hospital that was established in the British North American colonies. There are also three different well-known children hospitals that are based here; they include Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the Shriners’ Hospital, and St. Christopher’s Hospital. photo attribution: ufv

There are two ways to become a CNA in Mississippi. One is the take the NNAAP exams while the other is to apply for reciprocity. The second option however, is only available for those who are already nursing assistants and are currently registered in a different state.

nurse-practicing-skills-on-dummyReciprocity is the process in which a nursing assistant is transferred to a state and is given the power to practice and work as a nursing assistant in Mississippi. When they apply, they must have an active status or license on their state’s NAR. Their records must also be free of any accounts of negligence, malpractice, abuse, or misappropriation of the patient’s or resident’s property.  They should also be able to pass both the federal and state criminal background checks.

The NNAAP examination is designed to evaluate the individual’s capacity to become a nursing assistant. It tests the applicants in both knowledge and skills since it is composed of a written/oral exam and a return demonstration on the basic nursing skills. Only by passing all the tests will the applicants name be then entered on the state’s NAR. Pearson Vue handles the examination and can be contacted to schedule a test date at 1-888-204-6213.

One of the requirements to be allowed to take the exams is to complete a 130-hour training class that is approved by the state. Classes will teach you the fundamental health care procedural theory and offer you skills practice using common nursing tasks in a clinical setting.

Philadelphia is the current county seat of Neshoba County. According to the 2010 census, the total population of the city had reached up to 7,477 people with a population density of 688.1/sq mile. Philadelphia has a total area of 10 square miles, where all of it is land.
