instructor-of-medical-procedures-at-collegeIn order to learn how to be a nursing assistant, aspiring candidates are required by law to enroll in a state-approved training program. Among the different programs that you can enroll in, the most common are CNA programs that are offered by different institutions and schools.  Nurse aide training consists of a minimum of 75 hours of lectures and supervised clinical practice. It will help candidates prepare for the challenges that await them once they become certified nursing assistant.

Once you complete your training the next step is to apply for the certification exam. They must submit this form: http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/075301.pdf to the NACES Plus Foundation, Inc. at Austin, Texas along with the payment of $95 for the testing fee.  The complete address can be found at the bottom of the application form. After the application has been processed, the next step is to take the certification exam.

The certification exam initially consists of a multiple-choice written test and a skills evaluation exam. If a candidate has trouble reading English he can request for an oral exam instead of the written test. Candidates can also request for any special assistance, due to some disability, when taking the exam. Candidates will have a maximum of 120 minutes to answer all the questions and 30 minutes to perform all the required nursing procedures.

If a candidate passes both tests, then his name will be forwarded to the Virginia Board of Nursing where it will be entered into the Nurse Aide Registry. The Board will also send them their certificate, which is valid for 2 years.  You can check your status on the NAR by visiting www.license.dhp.virginia.gov.

After getting certified the holder must work as a paid nursing assistant in order to qualify for renewal. The Board will send out a notice to the holder’s address at least 30 days prior to the certificate’s expiration date. It is the holder’s responsibility to renew his or her certification even without the notice. If you do not receive your notice in the middle of the month that your certificate expires, please call the BON at (804) 367-4569.
