To become a CNA in this state you will need to become certified. This is best accomplished by attending a state approved school program and passing the nurse aide exams. Applicants must be at least sixteen years old and pass a criminal background check and physical exam. According to California Law, a nurse aide must be certified to work in a certified nursing facility.
Your training will have two different primary components. These are classroom instruction and lectures and clinical experience practicing hands-on skills aptitude. For the class instruction you will receive theoretical teaching in common health care procedures, and duties. In the clinical portion you will get supervised on the job type training focusing on basic patient care tasks. At least two of the clinical training hours will be devoted to patients who have mental & developmental disorders. Some of the types of disorders this instruction will prepare you for include mental illness, mental retardation, cerebral palsy, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, epilepsy, and Parkinson’s disease.
After you complete your class you will want to schedule a date to take the certification exams. This two part exam consists of a 70 question multiple-choice test and a skills evaluation. For the written exam you must answer fundamental nursing aide related questions detailing common procedures and protocols used on the job. For the skills evaluation you will need to demonstrate five different techniques in a nursing home/health care center setting. You must successfully demonstrate five of the five skills within 25 minutes to pass.
Challenging the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam is the most common way of getting certified in this state. Before one can take the exam, one must first apply for it. All nurse aide student candidates who are applying for the NNAAP exam are required to complete a CNA training program that is approved by the CDPH. Candidates are allowed a maximum of 2 years to apply and pass the NNAAP exam. If the candidate does not pass within that time, he will be required to complete another training program.
If a candidate did not complete a CNA program but was able to get education and training as nursing student or graduate, the candidate can apply but must first contact the CDPH at (916) 327-2445 to determine his eligibility. If the candidate is found eligible, the CDPH will give further instructions on what to do. Registered nurses, LPNs, and medics can also do the same if they wish to take the NNAAP exam.
California has authorized Pearson VUE to help schedule and conduct the exams at Regional Testing Centers. This exam consists of a written (oral) knowledge exam and a practical skills test. Candidates who are able to pass all the portions of the test will get certified by the Aide and Technician Certification Section of the L&C Program. If you wish to know more about the exams, you can download a copy of the Candidate Handbook (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/070500.pdf).
Once a nurse aide is certified, it will be his responsibility to keep his certification active. CNAs are required to renew their certificate every 24 months. If a nurse aide changes his or her name or address, he/she must inform the ATCS within 60 days of the change by sending the Request for Name/Address Change Form (http://www.cdph.ca.gov/pubsforms/forms/CtrldForms/cdph0929.pdf). The nurse aide can also request for a new and updated certificate by indicating a request on the same form.
Notices and renewal forms are sent out by the ATCS at least 4 months before the certification’s expiration. A nurse aide can only renew his/her certificate if he/she was able to find work as a paid nurse aide for at least 8 hours and complete 48 hours of continuing education or in-service training. The CE or in-service completion form (http://www.cdph.ca.gov/pubsforms/forms/CtrldForms/CDPH283a.pdf) must be submitted along with the renewal forms (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/070512.pdf).
