Before you are allowed to work in the state of New Mexico as a nursing aide, you must first have a license from the state. You will only get your license if you pass the state certification exams. A requirement for taking the exams is completing a CNA course that is state-approved and offers the appropriate amount of instruction. After completing both your training program and taking the certification exams you will be placed on the Nurse Aide Registry and become eligible to work.

The applicants for the New Mexico Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Program (NACEP) will find that the exams are composed of both a written/oral exam and a return demonstration on the basic nursing skills. These candidates will need to pass both exams in order to gain entry on to the Nurse Aide Registry and receive their CNA license.

What some probably do not know is that during the clinical skills tests, the candidates will also be tested for indirect care behaviors by the nurse aide evaluators. Although proper hand washing before and after the start of every procedure is a part of indirect care, it will not be included in the rating of the candidate’s performance. There are also checkpoints for the indirect care behaviors that the evaluators will be basing their scoring on. These checkpoints include:

•    Greeting the patient and introducing oneself
•    Give explanation on the procedure to be done before it is performed
•    Ask about any preferences
•    Use of standard care for infection control
•    Ask about the patient’s comfort and any needs during the care
•    Promotion of the patient’s rights
•    Promotion of the patient’s safety.

With regards to the questioning of the patient’s comfort during the performance of the procedures, the evaluators will only be expecting this to be asked in bathing-type skills such as catheter care, foot care, partial or full bed bath, perineal care, and hand and nail care.

For every procedure, there will be a different set of checkpoints that will be looked out for to be performed. Some of them will be common such as refraining from touching the patient with dirty hands and the proper removal of used gloves.  There will also be some that will be specific for a certain type of procedure.
