One must get placed on the Nurse Aide Registry and get certified to work as a long-tern nurse aide in any federally certified healthcare facility in the State of Wyoming. The two main ways of getting placed are through testing or by endorsement.
The endorsement route is only available for applicants who are already certified in another state as nurse aides. They must have a clean record and an active certification to qualify for this process. In addition, they must also show proof that they were able to work 16 hours as CNAs within the last 2 years and complete 24 hours of in-service training. Applicants need to contact:
Wyoming State Board of Nursing (WSBN)
130 Hobbs Ave, Suite B
Cheyenne, WY 82002
Phone: (307) 777-7601
Fax: (307) 777-3519
Certification by examination is the most common route since it’s mostly the only one available to those who have never been certified as nurse aides. Like most states, anyone who wishes to take the exams must successfully complete a training program that’s approved by the WSBN and clear the criminal background checks. Background checks are done at federal and state levels.
Once can establish eligibility to apply for the exams by completing one of the training programs that’s provided on the list. Most of the programs offered in Wyoming take about 3 to 4 months to complete. All programs are required to last at least 105 hours, which must consist of 75 hours of theoretical coursework and 16 hours of supervised clinical practice. The two components of the program are taught simultaneously. However, the first 16 hours or two weeks of the program should be spent learning the following:
– Infection control
– Mental health
– Communication and interpersonal skills
– Basic nursing care skills/procedures
– Medical terminologies
– Safety and emergency care
– Patients’ rights and independence
The exam has two parts that is comprised of a multiple-choice written (or oral) test and a manual skills evaluation, which are both taken on the same day. Candidates will have 12 months after completing their training to pass both exams. If they fail in their initial attempt, they are allowed to retake the exams 4 more times.
To help you prepare for the exams, we suggest that you get a copy of the CNA Candidate Handbook. The handbook is usually provided by your instructor; but an aspiring nurse aide candidate can also get one by downloading a copy from this link: http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/075100.pdf.
Once you pass both tests, your name will be placed on the Nurse Aide Registry and you will officially become a nursing assistant with a basic certification. If you wish to improve your knowledge and skills as a certified nurse aide, then you should attempt to get a CNA II certificate. Like the basic certification process, one will have to undergo advanced training and take another competency exam. If you are interested in becoming a Level II, then follow this link to learn more: https://nursing-online.state.wy.us/Resources/CNA%20II%20Program%20Brochure.pdf.
Now that you are certified you’ll be able to work in any place in the state of Wyoming, including Saratoga. This town is located within Carbon County, WY with a total area of 3.59 square miles. As of the last census of 2012, the total population was around 1,700 people, with a good percentage of elderly among them. Despite being a town with not that many people, there are plenty of long-term care facilities where one could work as a CNA.
