The first step in becoming a nursing aide in California is to enroll in a state-certified CNA program. The Nursing Home Reform Act has required all aspiring nursing aides to receive proper training before they can apply for the certification exam. Employers will only hire nursing aides who are certified by the state and were able to maintain an active certification.
CNA training in California consists of 50 hours of lectures and 100 hours of supervised clinical practice. Students are handled by qualified clinical instructors with at least 2 years of background experiences in nursing and educating adults. Prior to the start of the clinical practice, students are taught important basic concepts such as infection control, interpersonal skills, safety and emergency procedures, basic nursing care, and the rights and independence of the patients.
You will want to ensure the program you enroll in is licensed by the CA Department of Public Health and is approved for instruction. You can call the Training Program Review Unit (TPRU) to verify a course is approved by calling (916)552-8873. Some online classes are available, however only 24 hours of the 48 hours required in-service training can be completed online.
Upon enrolling in a state-approved training program, students are required to be fingerprinted through the Live Scan. The fingerprinting is for the mandatory background checks for criminal records. Background checks are now required for all aspiring nursing aides due to the high number of incidences that occurred involving healthcare providers.
By completing a state-approved training program, aspirants will then be able to apply for the certification exam. The certification exam is a two part exam that consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a skills evaluation exam. Aspirants must pass both tests to get certified.
Each aspirant is given 3 attempts to pass. These attempts are only valid within 2 years after completing their training. If an aspirant fails to pass within 2 years after completing his training or still fails after his 3rd attempt, he will be required to complete another 150-hour CNA program.
