The completion of a state-certified training program is a requirement to become a nursing assistant. By completing a program that has been approved by the state, the individual may then apply for the competency exams afterwards. It is very important that before the nursing assistant handles the patients, he must first receive proper instructions.

two-college-girls-studyingWhile meeting the school and exam requirements, you must also pass background checks and provide certain documents. You have to specify what type of test you are going to take based on the type of program that you finished.

To ensure that the training will meet federal and state standards, all training facilities must use the curriculum that the Department had created. The entire content of the curriculum must be covered during the entire training course. Under no circumstances may a training facility be allowed to neither add nor remove anything from the curriculum. The trainings that are offered should cover:
•    The Core Curriculum for the NATCEP
•    Psycho-social Needs of the Patients/Residents
•    Physical Needs of the Patients/Residents
•    Spiritual, Recreational, and Activity Needs of the Patients/Residents.

Those mentioned above are modules that are offered in the NATCEP training. They should also include Student’s objectives, content map, and suggested and possible learning experiences. Keep in mind that although the modules should be presented in order, the concepts in each module may be reorganized in order to gain maximum learning.

Training should prepare the students for the challenge of taking care of the patients. To ensure that they are well capable of handling them, aspiring nursing assistants will be tested in the competency evaluations after completion of training. The competency exams, which are offered by PSI, consist of a written/oral exam and a skills evaluation. To get ones name on the New Jersey Nurse Aide Registry, one must be able to pass both parts of the evaluation exam.

Receiving proper training as well as getting a CNA certification is a vital step in becoming a nursing assistant in California. According to the state laws, only those who have been certified are allowed to work in state-approved nursing facilities.

college-lecture-classNurse aide classes must be licensed and approved by the CA Department of Public Health. Online classes are available, however you can only complete 24 hours of the program online, with the remainder completed in a physical location. Typically programs can be completed within 2 months time. You will also have to pass the state and the federal background checks for criminal records. The completion of a training program and the background checks are both requirements to take the license exams. Other requirements for the exams include passing documents like immunization records, proof of your training, ID photo, fingerprint cards, complete application form, as well as paying the needed fees.

CNA training consists of 50 hours of classroom lessons and 100 hours of clinical practice. Students are placed under the care of licensed nurses with at least 2 years of nursing experiences and a background in educating adults. Students will be taught concepts such as infection control, medical terminologies, human anatomy, roles and responsibilities of a nursing assistant, patients’ rights and independence, and other related concepts.

Completing an approved nursing assistant program is the most common way of establishing eligibility to apply for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam. This exam consists of a 70-item knowledge exam and a clinical skills test. Those who will pass all the tests will get a CNA certification issued by the state’s Aide and Technician Certification Section.

You are given up to two years to pass the certification exams from the time you take your course instruction. You can have your school help you schedule an exam date or contact the CDPH at (916) 327-2445 to find a testing location. When you arrive for the exam you will need to complete two different parts to pass. These are a written test and a demonstration skills exam. After you pass you are granted certification on the state nurse aide registry. This enables you to be registered for 2 years, after which time you must renew your license to remain in good standing.

Registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, nursing students/graduates, medics, and other similar healthcare providers may also apply for the NNAAP exam. To ensure their eligibility, they must call the ATCS at (916) 327-2445.

Because of the shortage of nursing assistants in the state, California is now offering CNAs from other states, reciprocity. Reciprocity allows them to transfer their certification and work in California without taking other tests.  Applicants must have a current certification and a good relationship with their state.  To protect the patients, all applicants through this process are still required to get fingerprinted in California and undergo the criminal background check. A copy of the completed Request for Live Scan Services must be submitted to the CDPH along with the CNA Initial Application Form (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/070503.pdf).

Unlike some states, CNA certifications in California must be renewed every 2 years. To be eligible for renewal, a nursing aide must work, for compensation, for at least 8 hours while under the supervision of a registered nurse as well as complete 48 hours of in-service/continuing education. A certified nursing aide will lose his eligibility to work if his certification expires.

Expired certifications can no longer be renewed. However, they can be reactivated by passing a competency evaluation exam. The competency exam is only possible if the certification has not expired for more than 2 years. If a nursing aide fails to renew his certification within that time, then he must undergo retraining and retesting to become certified again.
