A CNA license is a requirement to work in Rhode Island as a nursing assistant. The state will only give you a license if your name is listed on the Rhode Island Nurse Aide Registry. There are two general ways on how you can get on the Registry. You can get certified through either testing or endorsement.
CNA Licensure by Testing/Examination
Licensing through testing is the most common route taken in becoming a nursing assistant. This route involves completing a state-certified training class and challenging the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Exam. If you study, work, and train hard, then you may become a full-time nursing assistant within a year.
The state requires training programs to offer no less than 100 hours of training. However, the majority of the programs in Rhode Island consist of 88 hours of lectures and 32 hours of supervised clinical practice. A program must have both theory and practical training for the student to qualify for the state license exams. Programs usually take 90 days to complete or 6-12 weeks depending on your school’s curriculum. After you complete your training, you will then have one year to get licensed.
The license exam isn’t just a pencil and paper test. Aspiring candidates will also have to demonstrate randomly selected nursing procedures in front of a CNA evaluator. Both tests are conducted on the same day by the CCRI with the assistance of Pearson VUE. Candidates need to pass both tests in order for them to gain entry into the NAR and receive their license afterwards.
CNA Licensure by Endorsement
Reciprocity is a process by which a nursing assistant who is already certified in another state may qualify for licensure in Rhode Island. To qualify for reciprocity, the applicant must have a valid certification and a clean record. Applicants must not have any records of patient abuse, neglect, or theft. If you want to work in Nebraska as a nursing aide, you must enter your name on the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. It will only be entered there if you were able to pass the license exams after completing a state-approved training program. The license exams are composed of both a written and a skills evaluation exam.
As a nursing assistant student, you will be spending your hours in both classroom instruction and clinical skills training. According to the state rules, the student must have at least 40 hours, inclusive of the needed course work, to pass a training program. Even as a student you will already be exposed to the clinical area while being under the care of a registered nurse. These clinical experiences are thought to form a solid foundation for their future careers.
