The demand for nursing aides in California is continuously increasing. This scarcity has now made health care providers and educational institutions offer CNA training programs. According to the federal and state laws, a persona can only work in an approved health care facility if he is properly trained and has been certified by the Aide and Technician Certification Section of the L&C Program.
A training facility can only handle nursing aide students if it is certified by the CDPH. Part of the requirements for certification is that they must offer no less than 150 hours of training and teach the required 16 modules. The modules will cover different important topics such as:
• Nutrition
• Vital Signs
• Patient’s Rights
• Body Mechanics
• Emergency Procedures
• Observation and Charting
• Long-term Care Patients
• Medical and Surgical Asepsis
• Interpersonal Skills
• Rehabilitative Nursing
When you complete your training, you will receive a certificate of completion, which will be used when you apply for the NNAAP exam. Taking the NNAAP exam is the final step in becoming a nursing aide. This exam consists of a written (oral) 70-item multiple-choice test and a random skills evaluation. If you pass all of the tests, you will receive your CNA certificate from the ATCS.
Your certificate will only be valid for 24 months. To remain eligible to work as a nursing aide, you must keep it current by renewing it before it expires. You will have to get work as a paid nursing aide for at least 8 hours while under the supervision of a registered nurse. In addition, all nursing aides are also required to complete 48 hours of continuing education or in-service training. Twenty-four of those hours can be completed acquired by completing an online course from a CDPH-approved website.
If you fail to renew your certificate, you can reactivate it by immediately submitting, within 2 years after your certificate expires, a Request for Recertification Form (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/070512.pdf). Once the ATCS receives this request, you will then have to pass a competency evaluation exam to reactivate your certificate. Call the CA Department of Public Health with any questions you have about the current requirements by contacting them at (916) 327-2445 or through email at cna@cdph.ca.gov.
