The OBRA of ’87 requires all nurse aides who wish to work in a federal nursing facility should be listed on a state’s Nurse Aide Registry and maintain an active CNA certification. One can get certified by passing the competency exams after completing a state-approved training course.

In addition, the training program must last up to 105 hours in total. Both lectures and supervised clinical practice are taught at the same time. Depending on which program you choose, it can take you around 3 to 4 months to complete your training.

The Board of Nursing is in charge of approving and monitoring all training facilities and schools that want to work nurse aide training. You may find suitable programs being offered by any of the following:

The state will allow a person to work as a nurse aide without a certification for up to 120 days or 4 months. During that time, that person must immediately enroll and pass the competency exams to continue working as a nurse aide.

The CNA competency exams are handled by the American Red Cross with the help of Pearson VUE. The exams are composed of two parts: a written (or oral) exam and a clinical skills test. Candidates are required to pass both tests within five (5) attempts, or within one year, whichever comes first, to get placed on the Nurse Aide Registry and become certified.

If you manage to pass both exams, then your name will be placed on the Nurse Aide Registry; and you will be allowed to work in any federally certified long-term care facility so long as your name is on the NAR. A Level II certification is given additional responsibilities and is allowed to perform nursing procedures that a nurse aide with a basic certification cannot. To become a Level II, one must undergo advanced training and take another competency exam.

A CNA certification is a requirement to work permanently as a nursing aide in Pennsylvania. You will need to clear the background checks for criminal records, complete an approved training program, and pass the certification exams. There are other requirements to get certified such as undergoing medical exams, but most of them can be completed easily.

Those who have not lived in the state within the last 2 consecutive years must undergo federal and state background checks. The background checks are required to enroll in a CNA program. One way of learning how to become a nursing aide is by enrolling in a course that’s approved by the Pennsylvania State Department of Education. Approved programs are required to last at least 80 hours, of which 37.5 hours must be allocated to hands-on clinical practice. The rest of the hours are for theoretical coursework. However, applicants through this route can only take the exams once. If they fail, they have to complete a class before they can reapply.

A nursing aide with a lapsed/expired Pennsylvania NAR certification can also apply for the exams if his certification has not expired for more than 2 years. This route is also open for nursing aides whose lapsed/expired certifications were issued by another state’s NAR. Like nursing students/graduates, they are also given only one attempt to pass, and must undergo retraining if they fail.

A candidate’s name is placed on the Nurse Aide Registry once the exam results are released. The results are usually released on the same day if there are no technical problems. The registry will then send a Registry Card to the candidate’s address within 3 weeks after passing the exams. This Registry Card serves as proof of meeting all training and testing requirements. It must not be tampered in any way; tampering it may jeopardize one’s status on the NAR. Once you have passed all requirements you become certified and eligible to work as a nurse aide or direct care worker in the state of Pennsylvania for up to 24 months before you need to renew.
