The first step in becoming a nursing assistant is to complete a nursing assistant training program. Courses are required to be 75 hours minimum in duration and be approved by the state. If you finish the program, the next thing to do is to apply for the state examinations. It is not required to enroll in a class, however without the training and skills practice it may be difficult to pass the license exams.
The exams will be made up of two parts, one is written, while the other is a practical demonstration. You must pass both parts to get your license. They are conducted by Pearson Vue who can be reached by calling 1-800-274-0504. They can help you schedule a test reservation as well as provide practice exams and application documentation.
If you have any complaints about a nursing assistant, you can call the Office of Health Facility Complaints or the OHFC at (651) 201-4201 or you could reach them using 1-800-369-7994. An investigation will then be launched to verify about your complaint and before it is entered on the Registry.
If there were any maltreatment records on the Registry about a CNA and somebody calls, to verify, the caller will then be automatically transferred to a representative of the Registry. Any records of maltreatment will ban the worker from working in a licensed nursing facility.
For records pertaining to background checks, you will need to contact the Department of Human Services, Background Studies and Investigation Section at 651-296-3971. Keep in mind that the Registry does not keep any records of the background checks.
