Persons who are working in healthcare tend to have stable careers. This is because health care is always a necessity. With the number of elderly in the population increasing, the demand for health care providers such as nurses, licensed practical nurses, and nursing aides is also increasing. If you think you have what it takes to be a good nursing aide, now is the time to become one.

A State Police Criminal History Record Information (CHRI) report is a requirement for all aspiring nursing aides who have been residents in Pennsylvania for the last two (2) years. A CHRI and FBI background check report are required for those who haven’t been residents of the state for the last 2 years. These reports are a requirement for enrollment into a certified training program. In addition one must have a physical exam, and submit photo identification and complete immunization records.

Training programs are now being offered throughout the state. They are closely monitored by the Department of Education to ensure that their students receive education and training that meet federal and state standards. Approved programs must last at least 80 hours of instructions. These hours must be divided into classroom lectures and at least 37.5 hours of supervised clinical practice. While the students are in the clinical area they must, at all times, be under the supervision of a CNA Instructor. The majority of the programs offered in PA last from about 12 to 24 weeks of consecutive training.

Classes will teach you both theoretical nursing procedures and health care practices as well as direct hands-on experience in a medical setting. Some of the things you will learn during training include basic assistance of the patient. These are commonly measuring and recording vitals, dressing, bathing, toileting, catheter care, feeding residents, infection control, safety procedures, transporting patients, range of motion exercises, and room organization skills.

By completing an approved program, you can now apply for the license exams. Taking this two part examination is the final task that you need to complete before you can start a wonderful career as a health care provider. The State won’t allow a nursing aide to work for more than 120 days without a license. Employers will always check the credentials of every applicant before hiring.

The license exams consist of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a random skills evaluation. The knowledge test is initially offered as a written exam, but can be replaced with an oral version if the candidate has trouble reading. On the exam date, candidates must:

–    Arrive at the testing area at least 30 minutes before the start of the exams.
–    Bring two forms of identification for the pre-exam check-ins.
–    Have three (3) No. 2 pencils and an eraser.
–    Have their SS card or at least memorized their social security number.
–    Have a watch with a second hand.

Candidates who pass both tests within three attempts will be listed on the Nurse Aide Registry. The registry will then send them their Registry Card within 3 weeks after passing. Those who are on the registry are allowed to work as CNAs in federally approved nursing facilities for up to two years.
