Those who desire to become nursing assistants in Tennessee must enroll in a state approved course and apply for and pass the competency exams. Training must be 75 hours in length and will teach you 25 specific competency skills. Upon completion of your training you will undergo a license test which consists of evaluating you on five of the skills you learned during your training program.
The Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987, which now contains the Nursing Home Reform Act, requires a nurse aide to be properly trained and certified in order to work in a long-term care facility. A nurse aide can only be certified if his name is on the Nurse Aide Registry, which is a list of individuals who have met both federal and state training and testing requirements. There are two ways to gain entry into the Tennessee NAR.
One of the methods is by applying for interstate endorsement. This process however is only available for nurse aides who are listed in another state’s NAR. When approved, they will be allowed to transfer their certification to Tennessee while keeping their name in the previous state’s Registry. To be eligible for this process, the applicant must have an active certification and a clean record. If the applicant’s name is on the Abuse Registry, he may get declined. For those who have never been certified as a nurse aide before, the only way to get into the NAR is by challenging the competency exam. This examination is divided into a multiple-choice knowledge exam and a clinical skills test. The candidate will must pass both exams in order to get into the NAR. Before a candidate can apply, he or she must establish eligibility by:
• Completing a state-approved 75-hour training program
• Complete the Fundamentals of Nursing as an RN or LPN
• Complete military training as a medic or corpsman
• Complete a training program that is offered in another state
If the candidate was able to pass all the tests, he can expect his CAN card in the mail within 4-6 weeks after passing. Every CNA must find work as a paid nurse aide for at least 8 hours in a facility that is certified by the Division of Health Care Facilities. Private duties, working in the physician’s office, or working as a companion sitter is not considered as qualified work. A nurse aide who fails to renew his certification will make it expired. When applying for reciprocity, the requirements to be a CNA in Tennessee are basically the same as many other states. However, they do have different requirements for those that come from Georgia, North Carolina and Florida. The NNAAP exam was designed to define and evaluate the standards of a nursing aide. This exam consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a clinical skills evaluation. Candidates will be given the option to take the knowledge exam in its oral or written version. If you wish to take the oral test, you must request this during your application. There is no additional charge for the oral test. To get into the NAR, you must pass both the exams.
