There is a growing demand for nursing aides in the state of California. If you wish to work as one, you must be properly trained and be certified. When you enroll in a program, you must make sure that it is approved by the state. Most programs in this state take about 6-8 weeks to complete.

During instruction you will get classroom theoretical instruction and clinical practice using frequently used tasks. Some of the primary skills you will learn include: nourishment, toileting, dressing, measuring & recording vital signs (Respiration, Blood Pressure, Pulse, Temperature), catheter care, range of motion exercises, infection measures, transporting and health care safety procedures.

All candidates are required to complete a CDPH-approved training course before they apply for the license exams. These courses consist of 150 hours of training, which are divided into 50 hours of lectures and 100 hours of clinical practice. Before the students handle the patients, they will spend the first 16 hours learning about health care skills.

In accordance with the law, all students must be fingerprinted and request for the Live Scan Services. This is for the mandatory criminal background check. No student is allowed to start the practical training of the course unless the training facility as submitted a copy of the students’ Request for Live Scan Services to the ATCS.

The certification process in this state is similar to the other states. If you have not been certified before as a nursing aide then you will need to challenge the NNAAP exams. The NNAAP exam was designed by the NCSBN to determine if new nursing aides are competent enough to work in a certified nursing facility. The exam is divided into a 2-hour multiple-choice knowledge test and a 25-minute skills evaluation. Candidates have the option to take the knowledge test as a written or oral exam. There are no additional costs for those who choose to take the oral exam.

If a candidate passes all the tests of the NNAAP exam, the ATCS will send him his CNA certificate within 10 days. This certificate is only valid for 2 years and must be kept current in order to maintain one’s eligibility to work as a CNA. A notice is sent out by the ATCS at least 4 months before a nursing aide’s certification expires. To be eligible for renewal, nursing aides must find work as a paid CNA for at least 8 hours and complete 48 hours of in-service training or continuing education.
